Hello, Because I have no way of telling Boinc when to switch to Rosetta from Seti, for the second time (2 out of 2 software upgrades that have happened since I started with Rosetta) I've been stymied by my protective software. Your system (and anyone else's) is forbidden from installing executable files on my computer, which is a feature that I have to disable (and can only disable when I know that something is going to be installed). Twice now I've turned on my monitor to discover that something had been blocked from installing on my computer, and both times Rosetta had continued chugging away, sending me files to work on even though the new executable file wasn't installed to do the work, so not only was time wasted trying to send me work units, but also this process puts me in a state of having received too much work recently according to your server, so I'm unable to (for example) wake up, notice the problem, disable the software that is blocking your project, and rerun the update, because YOUR SERVER KEEPS SENDING PROJECT MATERIAL UNTIL I'M AT MY LIMIT FOR THE DAY! And now I'm stuck working in an unbalanced way on Seti, with approximately 22 hours before I can request another attempt from your server. My only solution seems to be to wait the 24 hours, leaving Rosetta set to 'no new work' and hope that I remember to disable the protective software before trying to connect again. If it's at startup, or if someone else on the computer switches to their profile, I will have no control, and be banned from requesting more work for another 24 hours.

So I suppose what I'm asking is: Is there any way to make your server notice when an attempt to install fails (or perhaps a way to notify users when an update is needed) rather than just blasting useless data at my machine when a failure occurs? I don't like to waste processor time, and I've been running Seti for something like 7 or 8 years, so I'm hoping to do a bit more weighted processing for the Rosetta project, but am stopped when you release these software updates without warning (other than going to your site every time I am preparing to connect my BOINC client to the 'net (which defeats the purpose of having BOINC manage my crap, no?)

BOINC is designed to work that way and Rosetta@home application changes are often frequent, it part of what we are doing. Seti doesn't try to improve it application constantly and is a different type of project, different type of work.

It seems you download of the main program is failing and the other files are failing, it sees this and bacs of on the retries (your 24hrs). Though i'm not sure why it keeps retrying to downlad the fails and not obeying the backoff. That would be something for the boinc message board http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/

I got the program to load (after the 24 hour delay) by disabling temporarily the 'intruder blocker' feature of Secretmaker (one of the few internet security software packages that I run). I'll look now for a way to 'white list' boinc and specifically rosetta@home in the software, so that I can leave this running unattended and able to connect whenever.

It's the purpose of the Intruder Blocker to block any executable which wants to enter your computer.

A warning window does appear where you then can confirm the download.

The URL’s from automated software updates can be optimized in the advanced Blocker White List for an unattended download. Refer to the Bann Blocker Optimization instruction in the integrated help.
