when you join (or create a team) do your previous credits go towards the teams total? or is it only credit you get while with the team?

With most projects your past credit is not counted in the team credit. The last time this issue came up (5-6 months ago), on Rosetta your past credit was counted in the team score. This MAY have change with recent server upgrades. The obvious problem would be double counting of credits between your old team and the new team.

Perhaps one of the BOINC guys like tony will chime in here with a more solid answer.

In any case you will not show up on the team list until after you have been awarded credit as a member of the new team.

In the past(on previous DC projects) people could use their credits like "bargaining chips" and say things like "if you don't do X I'm taking my credits and joining a different team".

Now You're credits always stay with you. When you join a team, the team only gets credits when you crunch as a member. If you leave the team, they get to keep the credits applied while you were a member.

Let's say you have 25K Rosetta credits and have never been a member of a team, then you join team A, The minute you join team A, you still have 25K credits, but Team A doesn't get any additional credit. As you continue to crunch, credits will accumulate both for you and Team A. Let's say you now have 50K credits. That means you've contributed 50K credits total, but your team only gets 25K of that. Then you decided to leave team A and join team B. You still keep your 50K credits, team A keeps the 25K you did while a member, and now Team B starts accumulating credit from your work.

does this help?

Not true, Team A will get all 25K credits

< NOTE text below was written before I noticed the above and have edited to add the above >

When you join a team, the team only gets credits when you crunch as a member.

Though if you have never been on a team and you then move to a team ALL your credits go towards that team. Only once you are on a team does this apply for future team switching.

This is 'per project' and not 'boinc overall'
i.e. It effective at project level, so you could be on a team at Seti and that has no resemblance over here. Here you are effectively team-less until you join one here.

Team credit from the wiki says:

The accumulation of Credit in your own account will never change regardless of membership on a Team. You will always accumulate the appropriate Granted Credit if you are on a team, you will accumulate the same Credit if you are not on a Team.

When you join a Team, you join it with a zero balance. After you have joined a Team, the Granted Credit is added to your Total Credit balance and to the Team's Total Credit balance.

When you leave the Team, the Credit you earned while a member of that Team will stay with that Team. You do not take it with you to add to another Team's Total Credit balance; except for Climateprediction.net which uses the old SETI@Home Classic rule where the Team's Total Credit is a simple summation of the Total Credit earned by the Participants that are a member of that Team.

The Wiki needs correcting.
(for the 'never been on a team at that project' instance)

OK let's test this. I've removed myself from the boinc synergy team and created a team on Rosetta called team "tony". This is what it shows currently for team "tony":

Tony
[ Home ] [ Join ] [ About ] [ Participants ] [ Community ] [ Statistics ]
[ login/out ]

Team info
Description This is to test a team credit theory
Members (with AND without Credit) 1
Total credit 0.00
Recent average credit 0.00
Founder mmciastro
Country International
Type Unclassified
Join this team Join
Create team account URL
Accounts created via this URL will belong to this team and will have the project preferences of its founder https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/create_account_form.php?teamid=2731

Active members (have gotten Credit)
Name Total credit Recent average credit Country
1) mmciastro 11,723.40 70.85 United States

So, I have 12K rosetta credits, but the team has NONE. I'm not attached to Rosetta on any of my puters, as I switched that resource share to ralph. This means the team total won't be progressing from my efforts.

Try joining tony, and see what happens.

tony

Sorry to interrupt.

Tony, could you provide information or a link to info about how the SETI folks added the Volunteer Tester" title to the beta users posting IDs. If you could either send it to the Moderators e-mail or post it in the Mods thread in the cafe it would be welcomed. Thanks

I do not know. It's part of the back end process, that I've never seen. I could email/post to the dev mail list if you like. You could email Rom directly. Which ever way you want.

Fluffy chicken, if you join the team I hear I'll have access to your email. This might not be what you'd like, but I felt full disclosure was the right way to go.

my email is [edit]deleted[/edit]. Mod9 you can use this addy if you like. I'll be deleting it within the one hour post edit limit.

OK, I've reattached one puter, put all other projects on NNT/NNW and suspended. I have some 5.07's crunching.

yup I see you when I use management functions, but not on the active member list. I guess it might take a while. You're exactly the person I needed to test this. Thank you.

tony

Maybe, you need to turn in a wu to be considered active???

As I stated earlier, I re-attached to Rosetta to see what happens when new work is done, but my first 5.07 errored out 90% through. LOL Working on the second one now.

Documentational post:

The team page currently shows this:

Tony
[ Home ] [ Join ] [ About ] [ Participants ] [ Community ] [ Statistics ]
[ login/out ]

Team info
Description This is to test a team credit theory, please don't join, we offer nothing. No flashy sigs, no forums, no games, no bull, no anything. I'm just testing a theory.
Members (with AND without Credit) 1
Total credit 0.00
Recent average credit 0.00
Founder mmciastro
Country International
Type Unclassified
Join this team Join
Create team account URL
Accounts created via this URL will belong to this team and will have the project preferences of its founder https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/create_account_form.php?teamid=2731

Active members (have gotten Credit)
Name Total credit Recent average credit Country
1) mmciastro 11,723.40 70.85 United States

And the "remove inactive members" page shows:

Remove Members from Tony
[ Home ] [ Join ] [ About ] [ Participants ] [ Community ] [ Statistics ]
[ login/out ]

Removing a member will subtract their credit from team totals
Remove? Name . Total credit Recent average credit
mmciastro 11,723.40 70.85
Rollo 6,269.96 97.69

So, Rollo shows up on the team (without new credit though), and the team total is still zero. Let's see what happens after a result is returned. NOTE: I see from the team page that it says "members with and withou credit" 1, not sure what to make of that. I also see the note that if I remove him as a member, that his credit will be deducted from the team total. interesting

I also don't see his 6K credits in my team total.

OK, so what have I learned?

1) my credit (for work previous credited to me and boinc synergy) didn't follow me to the new team.

2) Rollo's credit (which was never given to a team) didn't follow him to the new team.

3) A team member doesn't show up on the "active member list" until he's returned some work.

4) the team founder shows on the list whether he has returned results or not.

5) the "members (with and without credit)" doesn't work. I should report this.

Am I missing any thing which might cause his/my previous credits to appear? Perhaps, it takes more than 1/2 a day? Should I wait a day to see if the credit transfers?

Now, If I remove Rollo from the team, his credit is supposed to be dropped from the team total, but what if he removes himself??

Any Ideas?

did you ever entertain the thought of owning your own team? I can make you the founder and you can edit the Title, and other info to your liking. I'd even be willing to leave this puter attached for a bit to run up your team total?

any thoughts?
