21) Message boards : Number crunching : Crunching Rosetta@home workunits in Windows XP Mode-Windows Virtual PC (Message 65691)

Post:
I installed/activate the Windows XP Mode in one of my Quad Machine with Windows 7 Prof installed. I tested wether I could install and run Rosetta@home. It did. It only crunch 1 WU. So I checked if the Boinc manager running on the regular Machine to check if it run only 3 WU because the Virtual PC IS CRUNCHING 1 WU. The machine is crunching 4 WU. I can not explain how this work since the Phenom 9750 quad core has only
4 processors.
Now my Machine (MEN78-VM mobo + Amd Phenom 9750 Quad) has 5 WU being crunch at the same time. Can anyone explain this. Just curious. I am just tinkering with the Virtual PC working.

I think that windows os on 32 bit machine can only recognize a maximum 3.0GB OF RAM, and I think Rosetta WU do not support 64bit machines. From what I read in this thread here, it answer my questions about ram memory allocation I just posted in Qwestions an Answers.

One of quad box running Win 7 prof. receive this message:
3/17/2010 6:46:36 PM rosetta@home Sending scheduler request: To fetch work.
3/17/2010 6:46:36 PM rosetta@home Requesting new tasks
3/17/2010 6:46:42 PM rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks

3/17/2010 6:46:42 PM rosetta@home Message from server: There was work but you don't have enough disk space allocated.
3/17/2010 6:46:42 PM rosetta@home Message from server: An additional 609 MB is needed.

All my 4 quad boxes have same preference. I do not know if it is a fault of the computer. To check this error, I attach World Community Grid project, immediately the computer receive lots of work unit. Now it is running 4 wu from WCG, but no work downloaded from Rosetta.
Can any one help me with this problem. Thanks a lot for your help.
My particular box has Asus M3N78-VM socket AM2+ cpu= AMD Phenom4x 9750, OS=Windows 7 prof, w/ 3gb of ram.
Thanks,

Hi:)
I am using i7-860 on P55 gd65 mobo w/ vista ult. It is running 4cores/8threads on Rosetta@home work units. I love this box because it is running 8 wu all the time.
I wonder what problem support has fly on the wall have with th i7 processor?

I do not know where to ask this question, but my new P55 gd65 mobo with Intel i7 860 lga 1156 cpu which is running 8 threads, has a gpu card. From the preference menu, I checked the box which allow use of gpu while computer is in use. However I do not know if it is working or is allowed with Rosetta projects.
Many thanks for your answer or comment.

Hi Mikey:)
Yes , I did just that. World Community Grid immidiately send lots of work and I know then that the machine is running 8 threads and 8 wu crunching. Rosetta starts downloading some work and both Projects are running 4 works each simultaneously. Then later only 6 works are running. I reboot and switch to Win 7 RC. Win 7 RC runs 8 threads and 8 work units consistently. I prefer running the machine on Win 7 RC. I already have the official Win7 Professional, but I will wait until the RC expire at end of May. Then I will install the official release Win 7. Thanks.
joseps

Does this mean your problem is solved? In that case, would you mind changing your signature? It is a bit misleading.

Hi transient:)
I am sorry if I mislead you. I have no more problem with my new i7 860, p55 gd65 box. The last effort I did is to edit the ram memory usage to 90% in the preference tab in the boinc manager. This allowed both vista ult and win 7 rc to run the i7 860 at 8 threads and 8 work units. I am quite happy.
When I save some money, I may play games by buying the ATI CrossfireX. But that's wishfull thinking right now.

Hi All,
I just finished building my new box last night. Intel core i7 860 lga2256, usingMSI P55 GD65. Oem video card Radeon HD 4650, 4GB 1600 mhz dual Kingston It is running good. No OC. very cool. I re installed Boinc and run Rosetta@home. Not getting any wu. Here's the message from Server:

2/1/2010 9:57:40 PM rosetta@home Message from server: Server error: can't attach shared memory

I am not sure if the problem is my new machine. I wish know how to solve this problem. I hope I can get help from you guys.
Many many thanks for your help.

Attach the machine to a different project and see if it works, keep Rosetta attached but also chose a second project. If that project sends you work, you know everything else is fine and you should get Rosie work if Rosie is working fine.

My core I7 with 3gigs of ram and up to date vista. Running 24/7 365 days a year. Did 920,000 points from jan 26 2009 through december 5 2009.
Rosseta was the only project on the computer the entire time.

Hi bruce:)
I just bought all parts today for my new built: cpu=i7 860, mb=msi p55-gd65 intel 1156, ram=kingston 4gb 1600mhz dual hyperx, hsf=zalman cnps10x qiet cpu cooler, psu=coolmax 700watx and video card= oem radeon 4650 ati ddr2 1gb.
This will keep me busy assembling it tommorow. I am very excited and nervous.
This for my Rosetta@home wu. Question: Do you think this will run as an 8 core processor while running rosetta? I hope it will, because I read from anandtech review that it can run as a virtual 8 core machine. I will reuse my old dual core box, dvd-rw and old hdds.Cost me $838. I am crossing my fingers. I am not that savvy. I always rely on forum information.
Need your comment please. Thanks a lot, joseps.

Hi all, I am following your Intel core i7 thread. I am interested in assembling a box with i7 860 and Win 7 prof to replace my q6600 box which I just shipped to my granddaughter. I think i7 860 is the cheapest for my planned project. I have read Anandtech good review on this chip. I will run R@H in it. I hope you have no more problem running R@H.

since around Dec. 29 2009 i haven't got any new work from Rosetta@home, but everything is fine with Poem@home.
I've checked config. and all seems ok.
what's weird is that when i click on "update", it asks for work for the GPU instead of the CPU, and never get any work.
i've detached from Rosetta and reattached again with the same results.
any idea what i could do?

Gellidius

Have the same problem in my two boxes, it asks for work for the GPU.

Have patience. We are running on volunteer work sort company. It's not business for profit operation. A major supplier would not let this happen.
All volunteers are like comsumers. If one supplier is down, we simply switch to the next supplier. That's why I just switch temporarily to WCG for work.

Hi,
I do not know servers, research operation or it's management. Rosetta@home has become very big and draws large volunteer crunchers worldwide. Some kind of preventive maintenance should be implemented to make sure that distributed computing is not interrupted. If possible, a backup server or whatever should be available. And no one person should be doing work/checking alone . There should be at least two people working together counter checking/discussing each move before a move is carried out. This is done to prevent any break in the operation. I used to run a large production plant 3 shifts operation and I make sure that 2-3 engineers discuss an action before implementing it.No one person is fail proof. I love Rosetta. I just want to volunteer my 2 cents worth of idea. If I am barging in or out of line, I am very very sorry. I'll just shut my big mouth.

Here is what caused our current issues. I personally wouldn't call it chaos but a simple mistake and issues that arise with most large scale software development projects.

A developer/scientist in the lab accidentally updated the R@h application using the wrong signature file for the database which is unfortunately our largest input file. The update happened during the weekend and no one was around to fix the problem (I personally was on a backpacking trip with my family otherwise I would have immediately dealt with the problem). This caused all jobs to fail and hammered our servers. Our servers are still struggling to keep up with scheduler requests and download/uploads.

Coincidentally, a very large code checkin was made to introduce symmetric folding to our minirosetta application and unfortunately there was a bug that caused a 10-fold slow down. Before catching this bug, the R@h app was updated so we had to revert to the previous application version as a quick fix. To make sure this doesn't happen again we are planning to implement a quick benchmark test on Ralph for every application update that will test various protocols for performance and speed.

We are still in debug mode for our minirosetta application. There is a small memory leak and a 2 fold slow down in performance. The slow down was caused by a recent refactoring of the hydrogen bond energy code.

Joe That's a nice system. Are you using a GPU capable graphics card and roughly how much is your power bill?

Yes, I have got a CUDA-capable graphics card, but since Rosetta and LHC are the only projects I am running, I am not using it for crunching.

I can't tell about the electricity bill. In Germany, you pay a monthly rate, that is based on electricity consumption of the year before. I can tell in march next year...

Joe

Hi Jochen, I did hook a Kill A Watt EZ power meter to each of my 5 quad machines.
Each one consume different kwh. Our local electric company charges $0.93 cents/kwh. The following machines I tagged by it's motherboard consume this much:
1) P5K-E-$0.0164cents/hr, 2) P5K-E=$0.0144cents/hr, 3)P5K-V=$0.0125cents/hr,
4)P5Q SE=$0.0156cents/hr and 5) M3N78-VM=$0.0105cents/hr. Based on this data, I run my 5 quad machines 24/7 and 15hours daily, which cost me an average of $26.42/month. All cpu runs 75% usage crunching Rosetta@home and World Community Grid. I thought my volunteer work on power cost is all I can give for distributed computing, considering I built 5 quads dedicated to crunching.

Yes joseps, good move. I believe I crashed a hard drive last Summer because I left it running while the room got too hot. Even if the CPU can handle it, the hard drive can't.

Been curious to know, what is that behind you in your avatar? Tulips?

it almost looks like the tulips fields up in skagit county.
is that where the photo was taken joseps?

Yes,it is. Since you recognize it, you must be going there too. It is always a breath taking panorama. I visit the tulips field every year. The various state park campgrounds in that area are also our old favourite hangouts. joseps:)

I believe you are right. There must be a big problem with the server. Am too concerned . Rosetta is my favorite. Since we are just enthusiastic volunteers, lets just relax and wait. For the time being, take some WU from World C Grid. They have lots of work.
Right now my biggest concern is the Temperature in Seattle, 90*F - 102*F for the next few days or more. I have no aircon in my computer room. My room Ambient is 95*F. I am shutting off all my 5 quad machines to avoid shortening their life. The machines are all drdicated to Rosetta@home. All our major appliance stores run out of window aircon.
