1) Message boards : Rosetta@home Science : 10 reasons I crunch R@H and you should too (Message 19928)

its really hard to come up with a list of "the ten top reasons" so im not going to but some reasons i crunch are

1) i have been deployed at sea for 1 month now. my computers are all running fine and crunching without me.
2) this seems to me to be the best of the help find a cure site.
3) it gives me something to talk about aboard ship with other people and try to convince them (next time we get inport) to run it on there computers
4) I want to make sure there is a cure for whatever will try to kill me before it gets a chance to try to kill me.

Well time to head off to watch. good luck all

yes my wife at home.

I am in the US NAVY and curently underway. so yea at home.

i know it sounds like a joke but unfortunatly being were i work sometimes i dont get to see my wife for weeks to months at a time so i explain alot of things over e-mails

Very nice simple explination. I like it.

I told my wife at home about it and she made this remark that our cat actualy enjoys people twisting straws and seems to chew on them and twist them.. but so far the cat hasnt come close to a cure on the board as you said.. much closer to a shreded mess... oh well mabey the final draft you come up with my cat will understand

yes there are lots of problems with the article on slashdot

and most the responses are silly..

personaly i do read slashdot almost daily but i normaly only use it to read the main articles and dont get caught up with the junk posts that are added.

as my own opinion.
is Seti@home a waist of CPU time. yes i think it is BUT its your computer
and its your computer time use if how you want. its a setpping stone
for alot of people to get into distributed computing.
Are the BIG PHARM COMPANIES gona get rich from our work here and such
Probaly, once we here manage to get all kinks worked out and manage
to find cures for diseases then they will JUMP on the bandwagon and
start using the reserch to make cures. but thats kinda the point
isnt it... to find cures. its just also as a byproduct gona make
some people rich also(wish i was one of the rich ones)
When people ask me what project I think they should run on there computers this is what i tell them.
To me it dosnt matter what program you run as long as you are running one you enjoy for some reason or another. Yes there are some projects that have more scientific results and some that are silly as well as some that in my opinion wont produce anything worthwile but again its your computer and your cpu cycles you are donating. as long as you enjoy the projects then its the right project for you.

Personaly I have made it a gole of mine to try and run a little of every project and then decide on my own. I love Rosetta and I used to love the climate prediction (projects are WAY TO LONG) but every project has its own little set of users that to them its important and I respect them for at least running a DC project. Over the years i have tried almost everything out there and curently Rosetta is my main focus.. but i keep serching to see if something i am more intrested in shows up. No clue what it is but i will know when i see it i hope

till then Happy DC ing

I am very anoyed that someone would do that.

personaly I have my home computers running Boinc and i have no problem with them but i cant see how someone could consider running a DC project on computers they arnt responsible for and the like..

I know in the past there have been people who have done this before and people who have gotten in trouble for it.

Personaly i prefer Rosetta over folding but what one is better is a good question ...

as for running 2 types of DC projects together they were not designed to do it so of corse there will be slowdown...

if Folding comes over to Boinc i will probaly give it a try... Right now i am deployed at sea and can not adjust setting esaly to my computers so i have not tried any of the new projects that have become avalible on Boinc...

Unfortunaly most people (including myself) are adicted to stats and when i see my computers not producing quick enough i wonder what has gone wrong.. I can definatly see that some people might want to "BORG" computers as you say but i really wish that people just ask for permision. Were i work it is a definat not in your life will anything not autorized be installed and i can understand why..

I agree with Tarx if you dont have the right to install and run the program on another computer then DONT

i know that you can manualy delete the old Work Units

I am sure there would have to be an update to the BOINC code to make it posible to remove past due work units though. (i could be wrong though)

yes please keep us informed ... we love information.

there are discussions on other boards about the lack of information given by the project managment and i am glad to see that we still have frequent updates.

please keep these going

well its definatly an intresting project

if you already have Boinc you can attach to it just like any other Boinc project

as far as being able to complete a job there... um WOW it will in my estimation take the 1 computer i have running it about 2700HRS to complete the jobs there

alot of people will probaly drop out of the project and alot of people hopefully will be exposed to distributed computing and will serch out other projects and will contuinue to crunch

10) Message boards : Number crunching : Shorter WU deadlines (Message 10704)
Posted 12 Feb 2006 by Profile nasher
Post:
Well being that i am curently deployed and cant check on my computers besides lookin at results sent by all projects they seem to me to be running fine..

as for the short 7 day work units . in another post they told us that there were some jobs they needed results quicker than normal and that they would be going back to the longer times later.

I understand that from time to time there is a reason that a project may need to get a certain job or set of WU's done quickly.. for instance when Pirates put out its last set of jobs they ran about 5-50 min and had a 6 hour deadline since they needed answers now. corse people runnin pirates knew this.

i think a 7 day turnaround for some WU's sometimes is reasonable, but i hope it dosnt become the NORM... if it is now and again i have no problem with it since it will crunch my jobs as i desire without me adjusting schedules..

oh another thing if you have it set to get 8 days or work of corse its going to grab alot of Rosetta or whatever you ask it to connect to.. then since the rosetta WU's you grabed were of the 7 day variety yes it went to EOD timeing .. personaly i have myself setup for .1-.5 days dependin on the machine and whats its used for.. this tends to keep at least 2-3 jobs of one project or another and not put me into EOD that often.

Well i would vote and post but since im not a member of the Climate message boards and my standard E-mail address i can not check right now (at sea and cant check that e-mail while out at sea) i am not curently voteing.. i will probaly do so in a week or so when i get avalible connection to my junk general give out e-mail as oposed to my more private personal e-mail accounts

definatly alot to read and think about and alot of good points brought up

humm...

i dont have the ability to delete the post

i dont have the ability to edit the post (since its been longer than 60 min since i wrote it).

sure remove the e-mail address. i cant edit it

as far as people latching onto my e-mail and sending spam to it.. thats why i have a hotmail account...i didnt post my normal used account for that reason.. if a person i want to talk to sends me an e-mail via my hotmail account i will normaly send the response from one of my normal accounts instead.

EDIT-
i noticed that the 100,000,000,000+ message was hidden by admin

This thread has been hidden for administrative purposes

when this is done there is no way for us to see the responses to the thred eithor and i think the response by the project scientists was worthwile to be seen

honestly i didnt realize that there were so many countries and restrictions on the brodband brodcasts and such world wide...

guess im just a spoiled being in the US

yes i believe there are always ways to improve the programing and compresion of files and i always hoped they would but never saw a reason why they would care.. well i guess alot of people in other countries care and especialy for all of you i hope they find a better compresion and such for you soon.

of corse i dont know the exchange rates and right now im too tired to bother to look them up.. but with my cable modem and all the cable channels i get and such i pay about $100 US a month. but i get and use alot of bandwith on my cable modem haveing 4-6 computers connected 24/7 and useing a bunch of them for playing online games as well as Distributed computing.

The main problem is that this is a global BOINC setting, so if you run multiple applications, they *all* must stay memory-resident. I hope that the Rosetta development team will consider more-frequent checkpointing so that this requirement can be dropped.

Jim

i know this was one of the things on there to do list.

personaly i have normaly 5 or so projects on each computer and i dont have a problem with leave in memory for me at least. but yes it would be nice to have this changed so you didnt HAVE to leave in memory.

Well paul;

i definatly loved reading all your posts and comments.

Yes, I am one of the people from the most recent of wavs (coming from FaD).

it would take along time to go through all the posts and figure if i said something wrong or to offend people.. i hope i did not.

as for adding new message boards.. yes i would like a few more catagories cause alot of time i sit here and think what dose this post go to

our curent options are

Rosetta@home Science - dont normaly post here im not a scientist if its a science question maybe

Number crunching - alot of posts end up here by default since they are of what the poster thinks (or is) more important and about the project

Cafe Rosetta - this is the final catch all and if they dont seem to go in the other 2 they must go here...

personaly in my own opinion i would love some more sections for instance
- a team section (yea it fits in cafe rosetta but sometimes hard to see non team posts

there are other sections that im sure would be nice... as i said would like and would be nice... im not leaving unless i determin im waisting my time here and as far as i can tell this is curently what i feel is the most worthwile cause for me (in my opinion)

@ Paul D. Buck- I am glad to see that while you are restricting or limiting your posting that you are still crunching (as seen on boincstats)

@the fix it or im leaving people : im sure alot of you arnt saying it as a threat just trying to find a way to express why you arnt going to be crunchin here.

yes there are multiple bugs... and EVERY project goes down.

I think the moderaters are doing a great job. earlier this mornign i posted about a error on eithor a user or the program about the 100,000,000,000+ user and the problem was fixed.. i cant find the message anymore.. if it was deleted its fine with me if it was moved. Shrug i cant find it

@ paul again - as for people puting excuses on why they dont fix things. alot of people arnt puting up excuses some people just dont have the ability, skill or knoledge. your Wiki gives alot of knoledge and im glad for it. personaly i dont have the time (yep listed as one of the excuses) right now for instance i am maning a compartment as we are prepairing to go underway. im on a ship i dont reliably get internet connection sometimes so i really dont have time sometimes. (sorry about the soapboxing)

well got to get back to work..

P.S. had to copy and paste this message 2x just to get it posted do to the ship droping internet connection.

yes it is NICE to have projects that have at least a 2 week interval.

mind you that i also have adjusted my systems (at least 2 of them) for running Pirates (if ya know anything about that one .. its about 1 day turnaround max...)

personaly i understand that some times it will be nessary for the project to shorten there work times and i will be crunching even if you put your deadlines of less than 4 days ... but i think you might loose some people if you do (just a sugestion).

all in all

its up to the project when they NEED the results back and alot of times we dont understand whats up. So here is my sugestion. If you need to have some jobs completed quicker please make a post or put it in your news that the current target deadlines are shortened.. once we complete the yyy target we shall return to 2 week deadlines or such.

humm well this shows mabey a poll section is needed or may help

1) in favor
2) in favor
3) eithor is ok
4) would love to see new changes i dont care who makes them
5) wont say LIKE Einstein but more catagories would be nice
6) would love a wish list added

alot of these would be nice to see.. i wont say i would stay/leave/donate more or less of my time to this project if any of there happen or dont happen.

alot of us who came from FaD got spoiled because if it sounded good and Think liked it it was added...

as far as section being in comunity sections vs in the message boards. personaly i like to be able to click and see whats been added and such

since we are asking options and such (i know this one has to be a pain to impliment but) it would be nice to be able to select when you open a post to for it to be centered on the last post you read of that topic im sure its hard to program somethign like that although i know some board systems have it.

just my 2 cents
