I have one intel machine and the rest are PowerPC, so it is not just the OS. I also have a few Windoze machines but they are not as fast as the Macs.

If you look at the stats Mac are major contributors to the project. The credits produced per CPU by Mac machines is an impressive number, especially when you consider that none of this software is designed to take full advantage of the capabilities of the Mac architecture. I have over a million Rosetta credits, I am among the top users on Ralph, and now I have to go look for something else to crunch? It is even more annoying that the project team has not even responded to this thread. Kind of tells Mac folks where they stand on the project. Regards

Whenever they request work they just get the message "There was work for other platforms". Does the project no longer support Power PC based Macs? I have 5 of these actively crunching for the project, and another 4 waiting to come on line. Regards

Within a couple of weeks, I'll have crunched more for Rosetta with it than with my other computers in the past couple of years. Ah! Technology! Am also excited about the new version of Rosetta (mini). Hopefully this will mean even better science and an easier time optimizing the software (SSEx, PS3, etc). If you like the 2,8, You should see the 3.0GHz go. Regards
7) Questions and Answers : Macintosh : Screen saver won't go away (Message 18584) Posted 13 Jun 2006 by Snake Doctor Post: I have three dual Mac running the project and on one occasion I had the system act as you describe, but it was not two versions of the screen saver that caused the problem. In my case I had to manually shut down the system. After restart I have not seen the problem since. Usually the system will alternate between screen savers by application, but I have never been able to make it run two versions at once, or more than one version for a particular application.

Is it my computer or your formulas??? 40 errors over three months is not really all that many. Have you looked to see what the results says is the error? Have you been reporting them in the reporting threads on the Message boards?
9) Message boards : Number crunching : Report Problems with Rosetta Version 5.22 (Message 18580) Posted 13 Jun 2006 by Snake Doctor Post: This work unit looks very strange in the graphics. Parts of the protein do not appear to be connected to the rest of it. It's like some of its missing. The protein appears very small. I first noticed the problem when I saw that the work unit is only using 20Mb memory and ~70Mb virtual but has nearly 9 million page faults. Assuming it was a small protein I took a look at the graphics and noticed the disjointed parts. Any ideas? I'll let it continue for now (5 hours into an 8 hour work unit) If you would like me to screen shot it please let me know the best dimensions for posting into the forum as I have nowhere to upload it to. Cheers Stwato this is a known problem with a few of the processing techniques being used. Not all the work units are using the same processing approach. In some cases they are only looking at parts of the protein structure and that somehow affects the display.

(Message 18511) Posted 12 Jun 2006 by Snake Doctor Post: I'm not sure if this has been discussed elsewhere, so please forgive the nature of the inquiry. What is the potential for misuse, exploitation, and downright unethical use of the work and results we are contributing to here, and also over at the Rosetta Commons??? Be it Big Pharmacy, Biological Weapons designers, or mind control freaks like the late,and very scarey, Dr. Jose Delgado??? And what's to stop a person, like biological weapons designers, or someone like Delgado, from setting up a project that uses BOINC, lies about what the research is really for, and gets alot of people to unknowingly donate computer processing time to weapons design or psychological control experiments???? I think these are valid questions and I hope anyone that reads this gives it a little thought. This was discussed before in This thread.
11) Message boards : Number crunching : Is this possible? 71,399 in one day (Message 18170) Posted 8 Jun 2006 by Snake Doctor Post: If someone has 7 computers, is it possible to get 71,399 credits in one day? (Let's assume he doesn't have 7 super computers in his basement) I was looking at other people's stats that joined on the same day, and the top person is getting 71,399 a day. This actually is possible if a person connects a single compute to the project and uses it to feed other computers by moving the work units around. They could be processed by a large number of "backroom" systems and then placed back on the attached system for upload. This would give the impression that a single system had done all the work, when in fact the results could have been created by any number of systems, that are invisible to the server. But In this case I see you may have misread the stats for the number of actual systems involved.

And my mouse is trackball optical.(I hate having to move around regular mice.) As far as my start page, Yahoo news is my own preferred setting(Even thought Yahoo sucks and helped China track down a few people for voicing their opinions).And since they get their new mostly from the Associated Press anyway, I should make the AP my start page. The only problem I ever have with start pages it the stupid IE keeps wanting to open up to microsoft update even though Yahoo news is my default start page. Finding the browser open didn't really bother me, but having the BOINC client locked out and give me an "incorrect password" message made me think that somthing was fishy. I would just as soon let the Boinc run and the internet connection shut off, it is a low speed,256k, connection, but the Boinc doesn't seem to like to work without an internet connection. Oh well. And thank you to everyone for responding. Ohh, and this free version of Bit defender is finding infected stuff. So thanks for the heads up on better virus software. But I do like some of the features of of Norton Internet Security. Like the Parental Controls for internet site viewing. Their are things that I like to keep my kids, away from online. It sounds as though someone may have tried to use the remote monitoring feature of BOINC on your system. THis can be activated by use of the "Select Computer" option from the "Advanced" menu in BOINC version 5.4.9. If the person does not have the correct password, they would get the error message you describe, and it would leave the computer disconnected from the "Local Host". But it would have to have been activated from your computer. You can tell if the computer is disconnected from the local host by looking in the lower right corner of the BOINC Manager window. It will say one of three things 1) Disconnected 2) Connected to localhost (normal operating mode) 3) Connected to XXXXX (where XXXXX is another system) There is a password required to use this feature. It is there for "Farmers" who want to monitor and control many systems from one computer. In any case, if the manager is "Disconnected" the task window will appear as empty, as will all other tabs except the Message window. Usually you can reestablish the connection by use of the "Advanced" menu Select computer option. Failing that shutting down BOINC and restarting it will cause a reconnect. Your browser could have been loaded from the Project window in the BOINC manager, if someone had managed to make a remote connection. There is a way to prevent even an attempt to use remote control by creating a file that in effect locks out that feature in your BOINC Files directory. There is a lot more about all this in the BOINC WIKI.

They have told you a thousand times what is going on with this. Everyone from the forum moderators to the project lead scientist, has given you an answer. For some reason you simply won't take "As soon as we can" as an answer. Get real. They are not going to do any thing that could corrupt the data base in the middle of CASP, and that is it. Get over it. Bumping this thread every few days is not going to change anything.

I am on dialup and it cost me everytime I dial... So whats the best settings to have? The time setting was invented just for modem people. Figure you can run a single WU for up to 24 hours, I see in the science forum that the WUs just got smaller so that will help your download already. But the trick would be to get 6 WUs and run them each 24 hours. Then you would only have to connect once a week. You will have to play with it to see what setting gives you what you need. I think you can adjust the time setting after you download so you can play with the connect time until you have what you need and then set the time for for processing.

I shoot and edit a lot of video myself, so rather than focus on the content let me discuss the video itself. While I like the backdrop you selected and the informality of the speakers, you need to have some front lighting with that much backlight. The audio suffers from echo in the room, but you can take some of that out in post, enough to be acceptable. this would not be as big an issue if the speech was slower, but you are almost better off not trying to direct inexperienced talent too much. While I prefer the wide screen format you have selected, having the subject off center may be an issue for multi-purposing the final video. This will not be a big problem so long as it is kept in a web or computer based medium, but you are really close to the safe action limits on some shots. While I did not check the Safe title for your titles some of them may be a problem on an NTSC monitor. Video quality looks good, and you mpg looks good as well. I assume you are shooting in DVcam, or DVCPRo and running direct digital to the edit suite which would account for the quality. Your mpg codex works well too. Just out of curiosity what edit platform are you using (AVID, Final Cut, Premier, other)? Do you plan on putting this out on a DVD as well? Regards Phil PS - Jupiter really is a gas giant. It is done by international agreement. Probably since most of the research is done at universities, they pick the summer because the research teams are not busy teaching at that time. i realize that. your guess may have validity, but my guess is that climate was never even considered during the planning process. Well don't forget we are looking at this from a rather northern hemishpere centric point of view. CASP7 will run all WINTER in the Southern hemisphere.
