I also experienced a WU crash with a Windows XP box popping up and asking for a click on ok (Rosetta experienced a critical error ...). As it happened on my main PC, no big deal, I caught it the second it happened. But I hope it doesn't happen on any of the unmonitored crunchers our there.

Ah, thx for the ideas River. Didn't know that msdl was a debugger. I always thought it meant "msdownload" or something like that. Yes, my BOINC version is set to German, so that theory of yours makes pretty much sense.

:-)

I had a crashed WU today. From time to time I look at the gfx of the current Rosetta WU and I never had problems with that before. But today, when I openend the gfx for a WU, my firewall popped up told me, that Rosetta wanted to contact "msdl.microsoft.com". I was like, WTF. I said no, and the second I hit the "no" button of my firewall, the WU crashed with exit code 1 (0x1).

That's the WU.

What gives? Why would Rosey call M-$oft? And why would a no in my firewall - just the same as if the internet was off - crash the whole WU? All coincidence?

The same problem happens to me as well. I noticed it first with Leiden Classical, and it only happened after I updated my machines from 5.4.9 to 5.4.11.

Take a look here.

We're 95 members crunching for Rosetta, so we'd need just 5 more to be 100 members strong ;-)

same here, I've been running a P4 2,8HT laptop for over a year now. Only thing I do is to open the fan covers once a month and remove the dust besides having the laptop elevated on a solid surface to allow better air flow.
11) Message boards : Number crunching : Cache or Speed? (Message 7846)
Posted 28 Dec 2005 by Christian Diepold
Post:
Same here, I'd go with the faster one. Yes, cache is a nice thing, but with a memory footprint of about 80 MB per Rosetta instance, I doubt that the benefit from the large cache would outweigh the speed.

What kind of CPUs? AMD or Intel? AMD with dualcore or single? Intel with HT or not? Same memory ammount and speed with both CPUs?

And finally, why chose? Just use both ;-)

Thx for the answers so far guys! I just wanted to make sure that the gfx actually do show when a WU is stuck for sure. I guess that should be made public somehow. It's an easy but effective way to check and it avoids aborting WUs too early.

I'd like to know from those of you, who had a WU stuck at 1%, how the gfx looked like.

I mean, were the gfx still moving and whiggling or were they stuck as well? I'm just looking for a way to be totaly sure that a WU is stuck and thought, that maybe the gfx can help on that. I'd just hate to abort a WU that wasn't really stuck and we're having abig discussion about it over at TeAm Anandtech as well.

Thx all!
