I would vote for a graphics button so I could pop into the graphics then close them when I had my 'fix'. I am in the camp that wouldn't use a screensaver unless it's the only way to see the graphics, then turn it off to maximize crunch time.

I agree, this would be great. I just about always never view graphics because I want to concentrate my resources on doing the science. But if there was an easy way to turn them on and off "at the touch of a button", this would suit me just fine! :)

This feature is included in BOINC Manager already. Simply click on the WU in the "Work" tab. Then on the left side there will appear a button "Show Graphics" or something similar (don't know, because having a German install). Just click there and a graphics window will pop up.

It doesn't seem to work yet for Rosetta wu's. My graphics button is greyed out. Tried several wu's. Hopefully this is what the Baker team is working on...or something like it. I remember the button from cpdn wu's. Very nice - for a few minutes ;=)

At any rate, congrats to Dr. Baker and team for the very satisfactory project.

Post:
With the old seti classic I frequently had to stop it to do other resource-intensive tasks, but I have noticed that I rarely have to do this with BOINC in charge. When I get sluggish response and have checked task manager, it is invariably some other app hogging resources, not BOINC or the project apps. Example: doing a background full antivirus scan will bring my box to its knees. I set the av client to do those scans at night so I don't see it.

I don't necessarily think the devs should always aim at the lowest commom denominator with their apps. It's always a juggling act to get the science done by the largest population of computers. Since hardware is getting more robust, it seems inevitable that some platforms will get squeezed out of certain projects over time, but there are other projects with smaller requirements. Good luck in your quest for a dc project you can live with!

Well I already posted this in the problems section but then noticed this thread.

Using BOINC 5.2.2 I can't attach to the project. I enter the URL, then my e-mail and password, but it tells me it can't find the account.

Any idea's?

You probably did, but did you use your account key instead of password?

Well, my 5.2.1 upgrade odyssey is mostly over. I upgraded from 4.45 and it just wouldn't work. It locked up requiring numerous hard reboots, and would not work with *my* Norton (I uninstalled Norton and installed ZoneAlarm Internet Suite). I finally uninstalled boinc and renamed boinc directory, did a fresh install of 5.2.1 and it seems to be stable now....

My question is what to do with all the wu's in the old directory? Delete? Copy over? I can't recall seeing this discussed, but may have missed it.

Ditto the good stuff! Even with the occasional errors, I give this project a very satisfactory "warm & fuzzy" rating. To the project staff for their responsiveness, and to the user community for their obvious interest and helpfulness in the project, in BOINC, and in the Wiki, Thanks!!

The problems appear when one attempts to run this program in a shared environment, and BOINCmanager tries to sequence from Rosetta to another project.

Not only other projects, but also when boinc does its' weekly(?) benchmarks. Even with the setting to leave in memory set to yes. It appears that boinc removes wu from memory to do benchmarks, even if leave in memory is yes.

These errors are interesting. I've done a *very* quick summary list of errors I recall seeing in this forum (feel free to add to or ignore):

  • 1. wu's take longer than some expect
  • 2. wu's fail when switching projects
  • 3. wu's fail when removed from memory to run benchmarks
  • 4. wu's "flail" as regards progress & time to completion
  • 5. wu's hang at 1% and need a BOINC restart
  • 6. wu's don't seem to keep proper time crunched
  • 7. some wu's never finish
  • 8. some trial and error configuring pref's - leave in memory, 120 min swap, etc.
  • 9. different problems on different processors

I've only had #3 since I set "leave in memory to yes"; no recent problem with "exited with zero status" error.

I'm using BOINC 4.45 (tried 4.72 but didn't work well for me) & rosetta 4.77 on HT processor, leave in memory=yes, not running other projects on this box to avoid switching.

I found the wiki entry to be very well done, particularly the line-by-line log analysis. Very nice! But what a chore to do.

The boss of a Madison Avenue advertising agency called a spontaneous staff meeting in the middle of a particularly stressful week. This is one pretty sharp boss!) When everyone gathered, the boss, who understood the benefits of having fun, told the burnt out staff the purpose of the meeting was to have a quick contest. The theme: Viagra advertising slogans. The only rule was that they had to use past ad slogans, originally written for other products, that captured the essence of Viagra. Slight variations were acceptable. About seven minutes later, they turned in their suggestions and created a Top Ten List. With all the laughter and camaraderie, the rest of the week went very well for everyone.

The top ten were:

10. Viagra, Whaazzzz up!
9. Viagra, The quicker pecker upper.
8. Viagra, Like a rock!
7. Viagra, When it absolutely, positively has to be there overnight.
6. Viagra, Be all that you can be.
5. Viagra, Reach out and touch someone.
4. Viagra, Strong enough for a man, but made for a woman.
3. Viagra, home of the whopper!
2. Viagra, We bring good things to Life!

And the unanimous number one slogan:

1. This is your winkie. This is your winkie on drugs.

I tracked one of my "exited with zero status" wu's out of curiosity, and it does get credit; it is also documented in the Wiki - "most of the time the best thing to do is to do nothing" :

My results have 5 client error/computing, and 2 client error/done. I get the same error code as Mr. Barrett - just sent in 2 bad wu's. I checked prefs and set Leave in memory to yes (was no). I have CPU with 1GB RAM, plenty of drive space and I'm running with seti and cpdn suspended, doing only rosetta today - 2 wu's at a time, one per thread. Any ideas why I'm getting those errors? I looked at the wiki referenced below, and I suspect I don't have prefs set properly rather than unstable hardware.

/edit...

Also, using 4.77 science app and 4.45 boinc.

Thanks,

Well, I have done about 14 wu's (uploads, anyway - are there 2 files per wu?)since last error with no more errors (I shouldn'a said that...). 2 changes I noticed - I changed leave in memory to yes, and the wu's possibly changed, from 1pvaA_ to 1btn_. Not certain just what the name change indicates, but I noticed it anywho.

My mem utilization stays around 775 - 800MB, peaked at 935MB (out of 2.52GB). I'll just keep an eye on it.

Just finished my first:

Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.40GHz HT
Windows XP Pro, Service Pack 2
1GB RAM
CPU Time 93,355.33 (~26h)
Granted Credit 167.61

Works well if I do 2 projects, each with 100% Resource Share, then each wu gets a thread without a lot of flipping around.

Well, break's over. Back to the crunch.

Don't shut down the BOINC Manager or the WU will start over again at 0:00 Time ... This is in the first few minutes (about 10) I don't know if you let it run longer if the client_state.xml file will pick it up where you left off ..

I had a momentary power outage, rebooted computer. Rosetta stayed at 26.67% done when it came back up. Could be the interval it saves its' work?

I've got my first rosetta (20/9.09) (resource share/%), sah (100/45.45), & cpdn (100/45.45) wu's running. All are playing nice together - so far. Rosetta wu is 2:08cpu time/26.67%/5:52 to completion since last night. HT 3.4GHz windoze. Using BOINC 4.45.

Sounds like an interesting project.
