Your Linux box is on an older version of BOINC. 5.4.11.

Hmm, I will check it this weekend and see about updating.

Perhaps you were referring to your RAC?? That is your average credit per day. Different from work units (which are now called tasks).

Quite right, I was incorrect in my terminology. I have been averaging approx. 500-750 RAC/day between two machines (my fast Linux box and my slow, older Windows box).

Is it possible it was showing KB rather then MB of disk space?

No, in the messages screen of BOINC Manager, it was telling me that I had to delete more than 135000 MB before BOINC would get more work!

You can check the disk tab in the advanced view and see how much space BOINC is actually using for all of your projects. How much is it now using?

In that screen, I have never seen BOINC use more than about 20-25 MB of disk space.

BTW, I have a Windows box in my wife's office, but it's running BOINC just fine. The problem was with my Sabayon Linux box with a dual-core AMD 64-bit. That machine was pumping out about 500-600 WU/day until this happened. But I'm back up and running now.

OK, I guess I'll just have to shrug and move on. But I find it odd that the server would repeatedly tell me (before I burned a handful of DVDs to move files off the HD) that I would have to free 134857 MB on the HD before I would get any new work! Rosetta takes only a few MB on my machine. Even after I burned all those DVDs and deleted the files from the HD, it still told me I had to free more than 85000 MB.

That's what led me to believe that the disk usage settings apply to how much capacity must be free on the hard drive -- not to how much Boinc will use.

dcdc, I hear what you're saying. But I kept reducing those variables lower and lower... like .5 GB, .1% of total disk space, etc. The server was still saying that I had to free 87500 MB before BOINC would get any resources! So I went in the opposite direction -- setting the variables at 220 GB, 90% disk usage, and the server sent me new work the next time I updated the program.

This problem occurred in the first place because I downloaded some large files (maybe 50 GB worth). I still had about 70 GB on the hard drive, but BOINC quit working and sent me into about 4 days of confusion.

OK all, I finally figured it out. Here is a printout from my preferences screen:

Use at most 220 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.2 GB disk space free
Use at most 90% of total disk space

I was understanding these phrases 180 degrees wrong. I thought this meant that BOINC should use at most XXX GB of disk space or Y% of disk space. What it really means is that your COMPUTER should use at most XXX GB or Y%. So set those values high -- see what I did above for a 250GB drive.

My BOINC manager finally got happy when I set those variables high instead of steadily decreasing them!

Lately I've been downloading a lot of files from the internet, which must have triggered one of the disk usage variables in the first place.

try reducing the disk space options in the online preferences to the minimums and then hit 'update' in boinc.

Thanks for responding. I appreciate that you're trying to help.

I reduced my disk usage all the way to 0.1 GB and I still got the same error message. I'm totally confused because I've been running Rosetta for more than a year on 3 different machines without encountering this error. I don't understand what changed to confuse my Boinc manager.

Hi all,

My new homebuilt computer (AMD dual-core running Sabayon Linux based on Gentoo) was clicking along very well on Rosetta -- averaging about 600 WUs/day until last weekend. Suddenly the project wouldn't send me work.

I'm getting an error message that I don't have enough disk space allotted to the project. This is on a 250GB hard drive with about 100GB of free space. My default setting was to allot 80GB to Rosetta.

I have tried changing my Rosetta preferences many times and running the update command, but the server still refuses to send new work to my machine. Does anybody have any recommendations?

Thanks,
AndyAtlanta
