Target CPU run time
(Message 101306)
Posted 14 Apr 2021 by Millenium Post: Nonono, it does not work like that! A WU crunches as many decoys (3d structure, the correct term is "tertiary structure", how the aminoacid sequence folds) as possible of the protein that that WU represents. So, you have the WU, which represent a single protein, with its aminoacid sequence. Then it computes a decoy, which models its 3d structure. Each decoy thus is a slightly different 3d structure. The best one is the one with lowest energy. So, no, a task does not contain "20 models". It just contain the protein aminoacid sequence. And then it start crunching decoys, until target time is reached, then it finishes the decoy currently in elaboration and send all the decoys to the server. If a protein is small, a decoy does not take a lot of time to be completed, and in 8 hours a WU can complete a lot of them, if it's bigger, of course it takes more time, sometime a single decoy per WU if the protein is particularly big and complex. The project thus receives thoudands and thousands of decoys from all the users, the best one is the one with lowest energy, which is the one that is more similar to the real one. More decoys, more chances to get a better simulation! This is what Rosetta does, predict the protein tertiary sequence, which is very important about how the protein works, what it does and so on. |

Switch to using SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
(Message 96756)
Posted 24 May 2020 by Millenium Post: First of all I'm not a computer expert, only a person who thought it would be nice As long as you login with the same account you lose nothing. Statistics are saved on your account on the server, not on your pc. As long as the account you use (email and password) is the same... you still have everything. |

Posted 5 May 2020 by Millenium Post: I can confirm there is no project URL field. The only option in Projects are Add Project and Connect to account manager. Add project -> manually enter the address in the text field, you aren't limited by the list BOINC provides! As for your stats, you only lost the local graphs on BOINC itself, but your points are still on your account, as you can check. |

Posted 3 May 2020 by Millenium Post: Lol I have to say that is funny. I reattached to the projct for the new address and it just downloaded like 20 tasks or so. BOINC says I have 0.3 and 0.5, so similar values for the work buffer. |

Posted 3 May 2020 by Millenium Post: Hi all! For 64 core EPYC is normal to have so unnormal RAC ? It's legal? He has access to a lot of machines but due to how they are connected, having everything appear as a single host is much quicker. So no, this is not the RAC of a single EPYC host, it's instead the RAC of a lot of machines. It was explained in this thread, go a bit down and you will find the answer: https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=13833 |

(Message 95927)
Posted 3 May 2020 by Millenium Post: I did what was recommended in the thread, requested no new tasks, aborted those that hadn't started yet and decided to wait on those that weren't finished yet. All tasks failed when I checked just now and show as abandoned in my profile. I decided to switch because the damage was done and when I tried to remove the BOINC client, it crashed. Remove the BOINC client? There is no need to uninstall BOINC. Also were the completed tasks updated to the server before removing the project? I have no failures nor abandoned tasks in my profile. Seriously, it's very easy: Remove the project Reattach to it with the new address |

Posted 2 May 2020 by Millenium Post: I have just adjusted my computer to the new URL. I was not sure about removing Rosetta as the first step but since that's all the instruction that was given, I did it. Upon resuming I logged in and saw in statistics that 6 tasks were listed as "Abandoned". That seems wasteful. I am not a super computer geek and would not have known that such steps would have done this. There is great pride in running my machine 24/7 to do as much work as possible for this worthy cause. Please be more informative in future requests. Thank you. BOINC itself tells you that all running WUs will be lost if you remove a project. Anyway that is a thing you will never have to do again, so well, it's ok! |

Rosetta 4.1+ and 4.2+
(Message 95597)
Posted 30 Apr 2020 by Millenium Post: Security is the main problem indeed, having a Windows XP connected to internet is madness. It if was offline then, uh, no problem. That's why I suggested Linux, as you already know it's free, fast and, being updated, secure. I too indeed have an old quadcore which I still use, slapped Linux on it and it's perfect for what it does. |
