21) Message boards : Number crunching : P4 vs Celeron Processor (Message 1344)

Don't compare the times as is. What you want to know about is whether or not the project's science application uses the level 2 cache in the CPU a lot or not. Because that's essentially the only difference between the CPUs: The amount of L2 cache (128KB-256KB for the Celeron against 512KB-1024KB for the P4).

I'm hoping a generic install will get users to join that wouldn't have otherwise.

Isn't it easier for your situation to install it as a standard service/software running for the university, then only change it to the user's account for as long as he/she is using that computer?

Or am I misreading what your intend is?

The attaches to a default user? would still be the problem. You can't use Boinc without having registered to a project. The new Boinc 5.2 version has an attach to wizard which doesn't need the 32 character authenticator key anymore when attaching to a project.

Yet you still can't make one client for 5000 people, since only the computer that downloads the work units can upload them. You could tell all 5000 others to use your email address and password to attach to your account. But what's the use of a team then? ;)

...creating an executable that only prompts where you'd like to install the app, then installs BOINC as a service and attaches to a default user?

It might be me, but I see a big problem with this. Doesn't the person who installs the executable (especially as a service!) need to be at least a Power User or an Administrator on a Windows network? How many of your standard users are one of those?

The other things I see it dropping over are things like:
* port settings
* proxy settings
* the MSI installer

Is is worth continuing running Rosetta for those of us who can not complete a WU? I mean does any useful information get passed back after a crash or a halt at the 83.33% point. Or are wasting CPU cycles? Should we wait for the new version or keep going computing?

Ron... keep an eye on Boinc Downloads, refresh it every hour today (use CTRL+F5 or SHIFT+F5). A new version of Boinc is about to be released today.

This new version will work with RAH. This new version will fix a lot of problems you have today. You will need to uninstall your present version to install the new one. Everyone will need to do this.

Ron, I am running Boinc 5.2.1
You will get 5.2.2 or 5.2.3 later on today.

The good day is here. Just keep an eye on it. It will fix a lot of things.

(@David: I hope you see the changes before you try to find fixes for your problems where there are none ;))

Yes, my post may have been a complete mess towards you. What was I trying to terll you?

Well, it's easy.

If you set up Boinc to only allow contact every 12 days, then you can test for a new setting through the Preferences and the auto-reset those of Boinc for the next 24 hours to 288 hours... If you do not take the 30 seconds off your time off to forcibly check these things, then it may take at minimum 24 hours longer.

Remember to click the Update button in your BOINC manager, so the changes can take place.
==========

Although that is a good idea Fuzzy & something I do myself anytime I make a Preference change the changes will ( or should anyway) take place Automatically the next time the Client Contacts the Server.

Which it does do. Either every 24 hours, or at the time you set when your computer contacts the network server of the project you set that time at. Always according to the old time you set there, 12minutes, 30 minutes, 24 hours, 192 hours. What is your connect to set to again? And is it set at the same venue as that for other projects?

Best wait a day or two longer. Release Client v5.2 is on its way. Expected some place this week. If only so it stops you from having to change Boinc yet again in a couple of days.

you can avoid this error (beside when it is disturbed by benchmark) with setting your preferences to "leave app in memory" until science app 4.77 is replaced with a newer one. note though that this will inc rease your memmory usage

Didn't work. Still crashed on a pause. How did such buggy code get released?

I found that didn't work either

May I ask how you set it? Did you just go to your preferences webpage here and set the option to leave the application in memory? Or did you also Update RAH through Boinc Manager afterwards?

The memory usage will not go up much. When switching between work units, if you have the option to leave them in memory set on, BOINC will write the units to your page file (swap file, virtual memory). Only a very small part is being kept active in the RAM, less even than the Windows Task Manager shows!

That science applications are unloaded from memory when making a benchmark, is fixed in the next version of Boinc.

Using 5.1.8 I haven't found any problems of Rosetta being in memory together with Seti, Einstein, Seti Beta, Boinc Alpha and two other projects, or with Rosetta being in memory at the time of the automated benchmark or a forced manual one.

So in my opinion, if everyone may need to get 5.2.0 in about a week's time anyway, does time need to be spend on fixing it for older versions of Boinc? In that case, you'd best find the "leave in memory while benchmarking" fix in the CVS and build a couple of older Boinc versions with that fix. ;)

33) Questions and Answers : Windows : Rosetta keeps going when I exit Boinc -service install- (Message 834)

Post:
Might be due to me alpha testing Boinc 5.1.5 as a service.

Earlier today I had to stop Boinc, so I used net stop boinc through a commandline to exit it. I noticed that my last Rosetta unit was running at that time.

When I was done with what I was doing (not a reboot), I started boinc again using net start boinc. In Boinc Manager it showed that I was running a SZTAKI unit in EDF mode, but in Task Manager it showed that both SZTAKI and Rosseta were using my CPU. Neatly 50-50%. Nice, but I don't have a hyperthreading CPU.

I have now forced to run the Rosetta unit. It seems it got no harm from me Ending its process through TM. I'll keep an eye on it.

here's a list with a lot of optional downloads. Mind 4.72 and all of the 5.1.x versions are development versions. They may not run stable on your system!

Don't use 5.1.x on Rosetta anyway. You will not be able to download any work, since the server software of the Rosetta project hasn't been upgraded yet.

You can do so from within Windows, display properties. Set the screensaver option to None. But this will disable all screensavers for all projects. Not that the Rosetta project has a screensaver yet, but BOINC does have a standard one.

Which Boinc version is this on?
If you let it continue for more than an hour, does it eventually progress?
Have you tried a reboot of the system, to make sure nothing is stuck?
When checking in Task Manager, does the rosetta_4.77 application show with any CPU cycles?

"Leave applications in memory while preempted? yes"

Be nice and keep it in English if the first post was in English, please.

Anyway, even if you leave applications in memory when preempted, they will still get unloaded from memory when the automatic benchmarks are done. This is hopefully fixed in 5.1.5, but then again, that version doesn't work with Rosetta yet.
