Angus asked -
So why was this post deleted as "obscene"? Did I use a word that is obscene in some language other than English? I also did NOT get an email about the deletion.

I can't help you with an answer. I did not delete it, but it would appear that it was part of a larger series of posts involving some flaming. As I said. Sometimes the response is deleted as a matter of fairness. From our many conversations, you seem to think that all of the moderators have detailed knowledge of the actions of all the others. That is not the case.

Well, I can see that reducing the moderation of the forums did not help things. Just for the record. The forum software does not allow a moderator to "Edit" someone's post. If there is offensive material, the entire post must be deleted. Second, there is no way to leave a marker in place of any deleted post.

Whenever I delete a post the person gets a message from me explaining why it was deleted. If I move a thread everyone who posted to the thread gets a notice. To my knowledge no posts have ever been deleted because of the ideas they contain. I certainly do not work that way and I do not see other moderators doing it either. The language is the driving force behind deletion of almost all posts. In some cases people double post, or request deletions, or quote from a deleted post. In my case I delete the original offending post and the responses to it to be fair to both parties. But other than that posts are only moved, and only then if there is a more appropriate topical place for them.

While some people seem to feel that the forums are over moderated, others feel they are under moderated. Over the last month I had other duties to perform, which effectively reduced the moderation significantly. I now have some time to return to Rosetta, and I will. Considering the number of moderators active on the forums, it would be very hard to think they are over moderated. Moreover, most of the moderators who are active are also Rosetta users. So in reality the forums are moderated by the user community. I am not the only such moderator/user.

While there are general guideline provided by the project for moderating, the day to day specifics are left to the moderator to work out. So the techniques vary from Moderator to moderator. In the end the project determines who stays and who goes based on how well they do the job. Fairness is the key.

I have been accused by both sides in this discussion of bias. Frankly, when both side accuse me of the same offense, then the offense by definition cannot exist. All any of the moderators (myself included) ever ask for is a modicum of organizational discipline in placing your post and a certain level of civility in the discourse. Other than that you are free to express yourselves as you see fit. If the forums are not "fun" enough, that is not the fault of the moderators, or the level of moderation. Perhaps if you require the use of inappropriate language, images, or threats to express yourselves "for fun" you should expand your vocabulary.
3) Message boards : Number crunching : Can't see graphics on Linux version (Message 19578)

Post:
A Linux graphics version is in the works. We finally got some more manpower on our development team. Look for it on ralph in the next month!

Excellent. Graphics are important to motivate people to use Rosetta.

We're still checking whether the memory requirements might be too high (we seem to have a lot of outstanding users who crunch with Linux boxes with <256Mb Ram).

But you are not going to make the graphics mandatroy, so what's the problem? Anyone who thinks they're slow can turn them off. In fact, I wouldn't have them on 24/7 (that'd spend CPU cycles I'd rather spend getting credits) but I'd turn them on when I want.

Btw, 256MB of RAM is not bad. My laptop has 384MB and it's fine for most things you'd want to do (using GIMP is painful though, so I use my desktop for that). If you think about it, that's how big hard drives used to be. If people run an entire OS on 4MB of RAM, why do you suddenly need 512MB for Rosetta?

The nature of the work is memory intensive. This is true of almost all of the BOINC science applications. In the case of Rosetta, they have just reduced the memory requirements to 256 from the original 512. This is a significant improvement, but it also means that it is a more serious limitation. The graphics display is not the source of this issue, but it does exacerbate the problem.

While it is possible to run any of the BOINC science applications with less than the recommended memory, you are likely to have more problems than systems that meet or exceed the requirements. Even systems that minimally meet the requirements often have more issues than those that exceed them. Not the least of these issues is increased paging and consequently more wear on the disk drives.

I would like to ask why Roseta 5.24 wanted to enter to some IP adress?
Kerio pers. firewall stopped it.

Normally the Rosetta application would not contact any web address. The BOINC application does all the communicating with outside websites. These are usually limited to scheduling new work, uploading results, and the links provided for the project in the BOINC manager window.

The Screen saver does use an internal network connection (loopback) when it runs.

To may knowledge that is all there is.

What address did BOINC attempt to contact?
15) Message boards : Number crunching : Report Problems with Rosetta Version 5.24 (Message 19095)
Posted 22 Jun 2006 by Moderator9
Post:
Not a bug, but I noticed a v5.24 WU FRA_t298_hom001_5_IGNORE_THE_REST_dec22.pdb_747_47_0

which has a working set (RAM usage) of almost 300MB (298) and 837MB virtual.

Plus the data files for this WU are ~11.5MB.

It reminds me that Rosetta could really use a BigWU flag and my concern that woth such WUs we might lose folks with 512MB RAM (who run other software in addition to crunching for Rosetta) and/or dialup.

You are correct that this is not a bug. However, the large memory test you have mentioned has already been shown not to be the answer. In fact BOINC will use virtual memory to compensate for memory issues. Moreover, the BOINC scheduler will allow other programs to run and yield the processor to them as necessary.

But if you read the version 5.22 problem reporting thread, you will see many reports from people who were upset that they were denied work because of the size of a work unit. During CASP large work units are just part of the science that is being run.

17) Message boards : Number crunching : Is this possible? (Message 18981)
Posted 20 Jun 2006 by Moderator9
Post:
Hi folks, I have about 10 or 12 machines crunching Rosetta for us when they are not in use. One of the things I would like to be able to do is designate a single machine as the "host" whereby all internet traffic goes through that one machine (uploading/downloading WU's etc..)

Is this possible? I'm in a Windows environment.

Thanks,

-Ford

Yes but there are a number of different ways to approach the problem. The best way would be to get a switch with sufficient ports to handle all the machines, and connect the switch to the internet.

Second best would be to build a daisy chain by networking the computers to each other, and set up one system to share it's connection to the internet. To do that each system will have to have at least two ports set up for networking. These ports can be almost any mix of Firewire (IEEE 1394), Ethernet, and USB. But in any case you would connect them into a daisy chain and pick one to connect to the internet and configure it accordingly.

...Hi! mod, the thread of stuck & aborted WUs
is getting 10 minutes to download on my 28800 bps dialup !
So,
I started this new one,
to report WUs stuck at 74.101% with 0.000% of CPU usage -:)

I hope this new one will be keept small !

We are not using the stuck and aborted Work Unit thread for reporting. Error reporting for ANY error type is done in one of the threads linked from Here.

I will move your post to that thread. If I don't the project team may not see it.

In any case, you do not need to load the entire thread to post. There should be a button at the top of your browser window that will allow you to stop the loading of a web page. If you wait until the page starts to load (say 10 seconds) and then stop the loading process, you can then just post to the thread without loading the whole thing.
