Appreciate the reply, hedera. Unfortunately I'm not clever enough to follow it. How would I go about installing BOINC as a service? Is there a link to some advice? I'm keen to follow this up but don't know where to start.

Download the latest installer from http://boinc.berkeley.edu/download.php. Stop BOINC (not necessary but safer). Double click the installer to start it. Choose service when given the choice. Click OK through the rest of the installer.

Note you'll have to have a password on the account for this to work.

A few weeks ago (maybe longer) I sent the information David A needed (he didn't have nor want Defender installed) to fill out the MS form. I don't know if he's done it or not though.

I also have it installed as a service and haven't had any issues during the limited time I'm in Vista. I'm not sure what happened with your service install. Can you try with the latest version of BOINC?

i put it to sleep while boinc is running and it starts up when i boot it back up. Is that a problem?

No idea. I've never tried putting the computer to sleep and waking it back up. When I do need to take it to work (vary rarely) I just shut down BOINC and the entire computer because it ends up running on battery power all day (I can't plug it in at work because they don't have at 110-220 converter there).

Somethings wrong but i dont know what. Im continually getting validation errors on my results and not one has gone through successfully. You can check my results at:

Can anyone help me?

I detached as i thought that might be an issue, but to no use. Ive suspended until i can figure this out.

You're running Vista. There's two things to check. Is BOINC installed to the default directory (c:program filesboinc)? That generally causes trouble. If so, uninstall BOINC and reinstall to somewhere outside c:program files. I use c:boinc and it's fine. Do you exit out of BOINC before shutting down the computer? BOINC usually doesn't have enough time to do its housekeeping with Vista's super speedy shutdown. There's a registry hack here or you can just shut down BOINC manually (file -> exit out of the manager or stop the service).

OH! Crap!

I forgot David changed the Wiki permissions. You need to create an account and log in to see most of the stuff on Trac (doesn't even require an email address). All you can see when not logged in is the Wiki and the timeline.

For those who don't want to log in (I removed the irrelevant sections)...

It's fixed in the code currently in SVN (the code repository). Rosetta needs to do a server upgrade before you'll be able to choose the correct country. When that will happen, only the admins here know.

‘nother Vista issue is that sometimes (not always) when you re-start it’ll trash whatever wu(s) you’re working on. Be sure to click the BOINC exit tab before restarting. (Not just suspend or snooze). This forces a checkpoint.

It doesn't force a checkpoint. The science app here can only checkpoint at certain places. What shutting down BOINC does is allow everything to be stopped and the proper information be written to client_state.xml.

There's a registry hack posted in the BOINC FAQ Service to slow down Vista's shut down processes.

Personally I'd rather be safe than sorry and I shut down BOINC manually in XP and Vista.

Boinc still isn't 100% Vista compatible:
- If you use version 5.10.x, it won't startup automatically
- If you use version 5.8.x it will start up automatically, but you have to close it manually before shutting down in order to prevent work from getting lost (only occures sometimes, it is horrible if you crunch very long WUs)

The next version of Boinc: version 6 (currently in alpha testing) will fix all problems related to Vista.

Even if you use 5.10.x, you need to shut down BOINC or you run the risk of losing work (I lost about 80 hours on an unexpected reboot after installing VS). There's a registry change posted in the BOINC FAQ Service to slow down Vista's shut down.

I think if you turn off UAC, you'll be able to have BOINC start up without Vista bugging you.

*sigh*

It would be nice if Vista would actually remember that I told it 'Yeah. I know where this program came from!' But oh well.

New problem, besides the account key being waaaaaay too long.......

When I pull up BOINC manager I still show my old e-mail and no way to change it.

Manager....Options....Connections......OLD MAIL ADDRESS....

Any help for this?

Well, the account key isn't going to get any shorter...

Your email address doesn't go anywhere in the manager. I think the section you're talking about is for proxy information. If you're not using a proxy, nothing goes in there.

To Kathryn - don't think your reason is correct as deadline for WUs running is Sept 20. I have a five day workload so there is more than enough time, especially as so many WUs do not run to full time. For deadline of Sept 20 have 16 WUs still to run for 6 hrs.(AMD 4800 dual core).Am using 5.10.20!!
PS. Got some more 'high priority'running now.

You're seeing this on the tasks tab?

What other work is on the machine? What's the resource share for Rosetta? How long does BOINC think the work will take?

I don't know of a way of the projects to give priority to their units (other than setting short deadlines). And I don't know of any way for a project to pass a message like that back to the manager.

So I stand by my theory.

If you're seeing this in the manager, and it's BOINC 5.10.20, this indicates a result that is in deadline trouble.

- Manager: if a job is running EDF, show "high priority" in status

I moved BoB's post here. BoB, by the fact that you are had this occuring for some time, and your RAC for Rosetta is now down to zero, and you are still only requesting one second of work... it tells me you do have debt to pay to the other projects on your machine. Or perhaps you have a deadline that BOINC is concerned you may miss, so it is crunching hard to try and meet the deadline for another project. (Climate, with such long running tasks and widely fluctuating estimates for time to completion, can often cause BOINC to think it is at risk of missing a deadline).

...how many of the 33 projects listed in your profile does your machine still think it is participating in?

I don't think the request for 1 second of work is odd. A very very very long connect to interval coupled with a lot of projects could account for that. What I find odd is that the server is answering with no work from project.

I haven't checked the server status page, but I'd assume that Rosie has work or we'd be seeing a ton of posts asking where the work is.

Even the latest alpha is woefully behind the times as compared to Windows and Mac.

The credits stay with your account, not the host. So it's safe to delete the host once all the results for it have been removed from the database.

Or you can leave it hanging around and wait for the R@H staff to upgrade the backend. There's a more robust merge function in the latest sever code.

Also with the overheating issues I would like to say that it is problematic at best to ask people to download a seperate program such as threadmaster to minimize any potential overheating issues. I think that perhaps a better solution would be to merge this idea with the BOINC program, or project preferences itself. I mean the average Joe PC user is likely not going to want to become that deeply involved with a project to that degree. BOINC IMO should be the be all, do all 1 stop shop.. Again MO's...

Antony.

There is currently a CPU throttling feature in the latest release version of BOINC (versions greater than 5.6 have it).

Look in your general preferences on the web.

Use at most
Enforced by version 5.6 and greater 100 percent of CPU time

Note that its granularity is very rough. It checks in 1 second increments. So 50% throttling is 1 second on 1 second off.
See the FAQ for details.

80 (http for server communication)

BOINC.exe needs 31416 and 80 and 443 opened
BOINCmgr.exe needs 31416 opened
BOINC.scr needs 31416 opened

Or just try resetting the project. That should redownload all of the project files.

almost as easy as windows.

LOL.

But faffing is the fun part.

Wait until I start trying to compile it. Then watch the real fun begin :)

On a side note, my benchmarks are screwy. But I don't know if they're screwy under Vista or under Ubuntu.

Vista Home Premium/BOINC 5.10.13
Ubuntu Feisty Fawn/BOINC 5.10.8

Vista benchmarks

Measured floating point speed 1381 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 2918.71 million ops/sec

Ubuntu benchmarks

Measured floating point speed 2291.83 million ops/sec
Measured integer speed 4778.91 million ops/sec
