1) Message boards : Number crunching : What does TARGET CPU RUNTIME really do? (Message 51826)

The setting has no effect on the science. Each task here is composed of multiple searchs starting from a (semi-)random number. The target runtime just sets how many of those starting points you begin from. It will always perform at least one full search so if you set it too low it will run long enough to finish the first one.

So if I only crank something for 3 hours and send it back, it may send the same WU to someone else to do more testing where I left off? But if I test for 24 hours, there might not be anything left to test (or might be depending on my PC).

If that's true, I guess that makes sense.

I'm just not sure why that's even an option then. They should set it to 24h by default and just let people change it down if they don't run it enough to get that done in the 10 days.

Ah well.

Howdy,

I see this setting in there and I can set it from 1 hour to 24 hours. What does this really do?

Does it mean that for each WU I will crunch it for that amount of time? If so, does it mean for anyone with the default (3) we are leaving all kinds of things not checked and could be hurting the project? If I set it to 24, does that mean I'm doing a more thorough check and am helping the cause more?

Just not sure what it really means when I change that setting as far as how it changes what I find in each WU and if it changes my credit gained.

Hope that makes sense.

Thanks.

It appears that you have not adjusted your runtime preference from the default.

The project gains equal scientific information from one WU that runs 8 hours as it does from four WUs that run 2 hours each, with the added (and significant) benefit of one-fourth of the internet traffic.

The maximum allowed runtime is 24 hours, and all of my computers are set to that length.

If you choose to adjust your runtime preference, do so gradually, adding a few hours a day until you reach your target. The BOINC manager needs time to "learn" how to manage your workload.

I had never changed those settings. Assuming you're talking about the: Target CPU run time setting, mine was at not Selected which I guess means it goes to 3 hours.

Today I did crank it up to 1 day as someone else recommended to me just to see what happens.

I also changed setting for Connect Every to 1 day and Maintain an Additional to 7.8.

OK, i set my settings to:

Connected to internet Every 7 days
Request 1.5 days of additional work.

It's only downloading an extra 3-4 WUs at a time and when it finishes one it downloads another one. I can't seem to get it to download a whole bunch at once like I want it to.

It's a Core 2 Duo machine and right now it's processing 2 WUs and has 3 on deck. It goes through one every couple hours so it should have more like 100 on deck...

I set my preferences is to connect every 10 days and keep 10 extra days of work jsut to try to get as much as I can since this PC is stand alone. However it's only downloaded 2 extra WUs.

Muy laptop I have at hoem has downlaoded a ton and I only set that to the default settings.

I do have this machine running as a Service so I don't know if that matters or not.

Anything I can do to download more work to store it up?

One is FA_RLXpt_hom006_1ptq__361_29_0. It's been runnign for 95 hours.
Other is FA_RLXpt_hom003_1ptq_361_283_0. That one's been running for 227 hours!

What should I do? Let me know if you need more info.

Those look like old WUs from before the latest round of fixes. Just abort them.

In the queue there's a ton more WUs with that same general name. Should I go through and abort them all?

Just checked a couple of my PCs that weren't reporting and found a few stuck on WUs with the FA_ start.

One is FA_RLXpt_hom006_1ptq__361_29_0. It's been runnign for 95 hours.
Other is FA_RLXpt_hom003_1ptq_361_283_0. That one's been running for 227 hours!
