I seem to have found a workaround!

1. Open systemd unit file to edit
sudo systemctl edit boinc-client


2. In the new contents section, type
[Service]
PrivateTmp=true
then save and exit.

3. Reload systemd and restart boinc-client.
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart boinc-client

This worked for me and crunching some virtualbox tasks normally so far. Hope this helps.

I'm having this issue too.
I have Windows 10 (boinc 7.16.5), macOS 10.15.5 (boinc 7.16.6), Manjaro Linux(boinc 7.16.6) machines,
and only Windows machines are getting this error.
macOS and Linux Machines are downloading/uploading normally.

I re-tried now, and the result was SUCCESS!!
Now received workunits, and started processing.

Thank you for fixing.

p.s. The project communication defferal time used to be about 4 minutes,
but after the server upgrade, it is only 7 seconds.
This is great! :-)

I did the following additional tests, but both failed.

1. Disable macOS's firewall -> fail
2. Upgraded boinc version 7.6.33 to 7.6.34 -> fail
3. Enabled the "http_debug" and "sched_op_debug" flag on cc_config.xml -> SSL certificate error was seen.
The message like : "Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with given CA certificates"
(This is usually seen on other boinc project like World Community Grid...?)

Below is my full event log with "http_debug" and "sched_op_debug" flags enabled.
Timezone is JST (UTC+9).

In Boinc Manager, I cannot "Add Project" the Rosetta@Home to my new machine.

Environment:
macOS 10.12.5
Boinc 7.6.33

Steps to reproduce:
1. In Boinc Manager, choose "Add Project" menu
2. Choose Rosetta@home and click Next
3. Click on "I already have my account" radio button
4. Enter my Email address and password, and click Next
5. Some error message is displayed, and following line appears on the Event Log
Fetching configuration file from http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/get_project_config.php	
Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site	
Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

Some workunits hang up for long hours until manual termination.

They have string like
EN_MAP_hyb_cst
EN_MAP_cst
RE_MAP_hyb_cst
RE_MAP_cst
in the middle of the name.

Sample (Already aborted)

Their behavior is 'do nothing for a long time'. Looks like this:
Elapsed real time : 32 hours
Elapsed cpu time : 15 minutes

This is happening on my Mac computers. Windows and Linux seem to be OK.

OS : Mac OS X 10.11.3
Boinc : 7.2.42
Memory : 8GB to 16GB

My issue is a persistent 'Communication deferred' situation - routinely 18 hrs plus. I'm able to download units, and have a set pending upload/reporting ... but with communication constantly 'deferred', that never happens.

There are no local computational settings that I can see to invoke this delay in finished job reporting. Is there something more 'central' that I need to adjust (with my Account) to get this out of the way?


Seeing your computer summary, your "Maximum daily WU quota per CPU" is dropping too low (only 1/day).
This means you are allowed only 1 WU per CPU core per day. (In your case, 1 x 4 cores = 4 WUs per day.)

This value is maximum 100. Each time the computer returns WU error, the value is reduced little by little, and finally drop to 1 (or zero?).

Your computer seems to be returning a lot of error results (*1), so WU quota was dropped to 1.
The way to recover from this, is to return a valid successful results. Then WU quota will be back to normal state (100/day), little by little.

Regarding the computation errors, it seems to be NOT your fault (hard to solve on user side).
There is reported some issues, similar to yours:
Thread : Client error for ALL tasks since a month. (Linux 64 bits boinc 7.0.27)


(*1) It seems hard to notice your errors, because on the local BOINC Manager, it shows "Ready to report", not "Computation error".

What is most troubling about this problem, is that on the CLIENT, it shows that it completed successfully with "Ready to report". It doesn't even show that it resulted in an error at all! It is only after checking my Tasks that I see that it was Client error.

Im not talking about tasks that took 16 days, I mean after the computer running 24/7 for 16 Days crunching Rosetta@home WU, the problem came back.

A re-boot fixed it, but I don't want to restart every 16 days, its suppose to be headless and require no more input from me when running.

Those logs were from the Console for Mac OS X Snow Leopard.

BOINC is the process running, and so far those are the only things that are outputted in the Console. I have since restarted, and the problem has not come back, however I susepct, I will be posting here again in another 16 days.



It seems to be BOINC client problem, and not Rosetta@home specific.
I used to have similar error as yours ("too many open files" message in a log file), when I was using 6.12.35.

This problem is fixed in 6.12.41 or later.

I've upgraded to 6.12.43 on both Mac OS X 10.6.8 and 10.7.4 machines about 8 months ago, and not experiencing problems so far, on Rosetta@home and several other projects.

6.12.43 is not an officially recommended version, but it's worth trying upgrading to it.
