Unable to get new work
(Message 4585)
Posted 28 Nov 2005 by KWSN Sir Clark
Post: If you've been crunching Rosetta a lot and you're crunching other projects, in order to even up the playing field with regards to resource shares, it won't download new work until the other projects have close to their allocation of time. With my settings, BOINC sometimes takes a couple of days in between downloading workunits. |

file_deleter boinc Is Not Running?
(Message 723)
Posted 28 Sep 2005 by KWSN Sir Clark
Post: I believe it is to do with the database of returned results or something similar. It is only used by the project people and so shouldn't affect us BOINC volunteers unless the number of files grows large like it did for SETI. With a small project like this, I don't see that happening. |

Am getting warning messages... What to do ?
(Message 485)
Posted 25 Sep 2005 by KWSN Sir Clark
Post: I don't find there's any need to worry. I moved my BOINC folder over to a different more stable HD on my system and I still get it although not as much. It happened with all projects. I just ignore it. The only pain was it lost CPU time and %Complete with the old Rosetta app. but now that's fixed, I don't find it's a problem, the WU just continues from where it left off. Until it stops a WU from crunching I'll leave it be. If you really are bothered, set Rosetta to No New Work, run the WU queue dry and then do a project reset. Boinc-Wiki explanation |

Post: i just had a WU drop from 75% drop down to 1%. You might be crunching with rosetta app vers 4.76, next time your list of WUs runs dry you should download 4.77 with the new WU. This fixes the problem. |

Any chance of a graphic? (not screensaver)
(Message 379)
Posted 23 Sep 2005 by KWSN Sir Clark
Post: When we began this project our largest initial client was to be Housing and Food Services on campus and they requested that the app not use graphics so as to avoid confusing the staff. They felt that having something pop up would result in a rush of support calls asking about possible cracks.... Surely all they need to do is set their screensaver to something else??? The graphics don't show up unless you hit the Show Graphics button in BOINC anyway. |

Post: One's got a 4200+, the other is a 4400+ One's got 1GB memory and the other's got 512MB. I would expect different results. The setup's are similar The benchmark for the higher spec is almost three times that of the slower one. It must be something to do with the benchmark score. Try manually benchmarking both again and check the background processes that are running which could affect the score. |

Post: Mine's running at 99MB memory wise....for some reason, it started at 1.5hrs to completion and now has dropped back to 1% with 120+ hours but I'm not worried given the est. times are way off He mentioned above that each WU is examining 12 structures....perhaps it drops back down to 0 after each one. It would make sense. |

Post: I think the doubling effect is why they use quorums and discard the top and bottom result and use the average so that's it's fairer in that sense. With Rosetta currently assigning each WU to just one user, this allows cheating to go ahead but people should not care about the credit (I admit it does look good). But if they are crunching for credit, they are crunching for the wrong reasons. They should be crunching for the science and the quicker a workunit is crunched the sooner a new WU is sent to them and the more science they can get done. |

Process keeps exiting
(Message 210)
Posted 19 Sep 2005 by KWSN Sir Clark
Post: I have decided to abort the workunit as I have no indication as to whether it is a problem with the WU time reporting or whether the WU is going back and doing work again from the last checkpoint...dropped down to 75% after another process exit. I'm gonna drain my work queue from other projects and then transfer my BOINC settings onto another more stable HD just in case it is a HD problem. Edit:// As I thought....it's only got 18 minutes of work listed even though it's been running uninterrupted since yesterday. Will start crunching again once a more stable version is available. Edit 2:// Decided I was being rather defeatist especially when this project needs our experience to solve any problems before coming out of BETA. Completed the migration of BOINC successfully without draining the work queue. Will drain the queue of all outstanding work except CPDN and try again in a few days :) |
