Thank you for the answer.

... developing the technology to go after things like H1N1, HIV and Alzheimer's sounds like a good cause to me.

Oh, that part was never in doubt (that's why I chose this project over any other) and it's well explained.

What was less well explained was whether a useful outcome could be expected in 5 years or 50,000 years. A link to Dr Baker's thread was what I needed, and I've bookmarked it now.

It's three years since the question was asked. I fully understand that asking for a "percentage complete" figure is totally naive, but equally, I'd like some progress feedback to help me judge whether it's worth spending a few cents each night leaving my computers running. The website seems to focus on side issues such as teams, top ten lists, a certificate and videos of coloured folded protein structures, which leaves me concerned that real progress is either minimal, or unmeasurable.

The promise of useful outcomes clearly keeps the people behind this project hopeful. Is there a way that this hope can be packaged up in a way that ordinary people can share in it?

Thank you both, I seem to be running 'normally' now, so perhaps I was just impatient... but it was weird to see Turtwig fetch a task in advance when Pikachu wouldn't fetch one even though idle.

By the way, are you related to the french horn player Alan Civil?

Mike

It's unlikely. People acquire the name "Civil" because their ancestors were called Saville or Kivell but they were 'alternatively spelt' at a time when spelling was simply a matter of phonetics.

{-sigh-} never mind, it's working again now. I'm still none the wiser! While I was trying to get this computer (pikachu) to fetch a task, my other computer (turtwig) finished one, sent it off and fetched another (and one to wait on) quite happily, and yet I still couldn't force pikachu to fetch just one (for its four cores!). However, I went out shopping, and when I returned, sure enough, it's working on four tasks, and two queued up.

I do think, especially for newcomers, the messages and debug information could be clearer.

I'm also not downloading any work units, so my computer is doing nothing. (I detached from all other projects because I couldn't find a setting to give a high percentage to Rosetta). I've checked the disk space, and all the tabs on all the menu options I can see in the BOINC manager. I'm pretty angry and frustrated, actually. The messages say simply "2010-08-28 1:51:49 PM rosetta@home Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks" which doesn't give me the slightest clue as to WHY I got no new tasks.

If I use that 'debt' tool, by the way, I get this:
rosetta@home 76.763672 0.000000 100.000000
if that helps.

My other computer (of lesser capability) is still going nicely, with one task pending... so why does rosetta hate THIS computer? Why won't it tell me, and how do I go about debugging it?
