Hi,

My computer is idle for hours, the server status says there is 90k units ready to be send (if I understand correctly).

I have tried to connect and disconnect the project, update - only thing I am getting is communication deferred...

The machine is new, running Rosetta for couple days only.

I got new computer and it got many many jobs and run 100% busy until it finished all of them. Now is working half idle on 32 cores.

I have to move to folding as it supports all of my computer cores. :(

Hi,

Does BOINC have core limitation? I just installed (well actually it is portable version as I have loads of issues with \'normal\' one) and it uses 32 cores only.

Can anyone tell me if \'standard\' version behaves same way?

Hi,

We just got latest electricity bill, almost $800... :(

Unfortunately holiday season was very slow and we cannot afford running computers 24/7 for the Rosetta project any more.

I hope it is temporary - the business is picking up slowly but still - it is not like we earn as much as we should to have cash for all bills and debt payments (we used our savings in last two months).

But I am not writing this post to complain. I am wondering if you guys can help us to get some additional income? We are render farm (the cheapest on the market) and animation studio.

If you have any contacts, maybe some of your friends or business contact is doing 3D animation or visualisation and have need to use farm from time to time, why not to use the cheapest one? Maybe someone want commercial / science or engineering visualisation, or any other kind of animation? Please share our link.

(note for moderators, if you think that is breach of the rules and it is a commercial advertisement and you feel like it should be deleted, please do, I wont post it again if it will get deleted, so do not ban me for it, please. ;) )

Cheers
Tomek

That was not a complaint, it was an observation, though it could be seen as a complaint. It was not intended that way. Just saying that out of 4 projects 3 of them went dark at the same time. That\'s just weird.

End of the world is coming, possibly.

...rapture it was, right? :D

Just wondering, how will you redistribute lost jobs, like those from crashed disc on one of my machines?

ALRIGHT!!

I have a question though, you said \"it is the only one with graphic card (ATI 4870) and it is on the project for about month now, when others (render nodes) are a bit slower, does not have graphic cards (I do not count 8MB Maxtor on the board)\". Have you tried putting inexpensive stand alone video cards in those machines and seeing if they crunch faster? Boinc, and the pc in general, uses the video card for \'stuff\' all the time, if it is \'on-board\' or \'built-in\' it means the cpu is being slowed down to do it. A cheapy video card may increase your crunching somewhat. The reason I thought of it is because I threw out 3 pci video cards yesterday myself. They were 2 two meg ones and 1 four meg one, they were old, in a box and I needed to put newer ones in the box and it was full, so 3 really old cards are now in the trash. Sometimes taking other peoples old computers means you collect too much \'stuff\'!

Well I dont want to spend any more money and there is not too much space for graphic cards in those 1U servers :)

On top of it BOINC is used on those computers when they dont earn money and none of other programs here would use graphic card for computations.

You need to take on account that the fastest PC is not only equipped with graphic card but have faster processors too. I am not sure if BOINC is using CUDA or OpenCL but only most recent and rather expansive (and big) cards support it. I am quite sure too that on board graphic card on server computer is not slowing down anything. Those are Dell R410 computers, designed to run fast. :)

Sorry for late reply, but I seem not getting any emails when someone replies to my post. Strange.

My workstation managed to download some data and is crunching now but renderfarm was switched off and Rosetta servers are down again so there is no new data to work on for most of my computers.

Hi,
Out of the blue... I got communication deferred error...

I will try to work out what is happening but any help is welcome...

hmmm, WTF? :(

Stop and restart Boinc, this usually happens when the IP address changes somewhere along the line. Could be your end, could be a server along the way or even the project, but stopping and then restarting Boinc usually fixes it.

Although this could be a Rosetta problem, this comes from another thread:

Hi.

You have a problem, if you didn\'t know already.

Unable to upload/download.

rah_make_work1__srv1__Not running

rah_make_work2__srv3__Not running

feeder__________srv4__Not running

file_deleter____srv1__Not running

db_purge________srv1__Not running

EDIT/ Been like this for a few hours.

Thx, OK, I will switch my computers off then ;) such a waste

What actually means in preferences: \'when computer is in use\'? Does it mean if keyboard and mouse are active or if processor is busy doing something?

thx guys, looks like ill be able to sort it out, my computers will be busy rendering whole day today but I will read the guide.

The graphics design is my main job, the website is very outdated, the latest pictures there are from 2006, most is much older. It should get updated soon.

For example, whenever I play non-cpu intesnive games, rosetta takes about 50% of the cpu, w/o affecting game performance. If I do play a cpu intensive game, then the games takes up about 90-100% of the cpu, and roseeta takes w/e theres left.

...well looks like it does, I have 50%/50% but I will investigate further tomorrow :)

OOK, my program is not rendering in low priority any more but rosetta@home is not giving up easily... still fighting for processor power. ;(

Is there a way to switch it on and aff from command line? I can do it remotely on all computers at once, that might work ok for now.

Wow! RAC of 15,000! Whatever you are doing, it is working!

Thx guys for all answers.

First a bit of background, I am in the process of setting up commercial renderfarm.

At the moment its just my 3D program (I am using it for no more than 2hrs a day) and Rosetta.

The fastest computer (the one that you mentioned (with double of RAC)) have 30% faster processors, it is the only one with graphic card (ATI 4870) and it is on the project for about month now, when others (render nodes) are a bit slower, does not have graphic cards (I do not count 8MB Maxtor on the board) and all of them are for about one week on the \'system\', so RAC is not there yet. :)

I have tried to 1st solution (100% and uncheck work when computer in use), but it is not working any better. I mean some of the computers giving up computational tasks but some just keep on working, so my renderer its getting only 50%.

What might be important, I have not worked out how to get my program to run normal priority, it is low too (as BOINC is), but well... I am not sure if that is be a problem.

I am quite sure that is not low issue, I am attaching image with memory use when doing Rosetta.

At all tests that I did so far my progs is using no more than 1GB of memory, it is actually good way to monitor if Rosetta is shutting itself down, if memory use goes down that means I have access to all 16 processors* at full speed.

If it is memory than too bad cos I am not so interested in doing another projects, I am fine to pay for electricity (it is a lot) if I am helping in something valuable as disease research, looking for galaxies is not worth £150+ a month in bills. :)

Generally how I am using it now is, every so often I am sending computational task over network to render slave application running on each node, job gets pick up and after 1-120 minutes is finished and send back. I am limiting time so the thing is if my program is fighting with Rosetta for CPU power, I am sacrificing quality. :(

Well I want to help like a lot, but my job have priority and if I will not set it up I will have do much less Rosetta (I will stick to manual set-up, just leave it on whenever I am not working.

* - It is actually 2 processors with 8 HT cores in total, so not 16 real processors. :)

I have bunch of computers that I want to do something useful when not busy with my computational tasks, but quite often my program have to fight for processor power no matted what I will put in CPU usage setting (3-6% or more) this is more than annoying, cos now I need to log in to each PC remotely and shut down BOINC before I will start my work. :(
