1) Message boards : Number crunching : Tells us your thoughts on granting credit for large protein, long-running tasks (Message 94971)

While I still prefer limiting these "monster" workunits to 1 or 2 per host (WCG does that for 1 GB+) for extra credits we need to look at the hardware of the average active host.

Let's assume the average host with MORE THAN 4 GB RAM has 4 Threads and 8 GB of RAM (which is a bit low but i don't know the numbers). 75% of RAM usage while active is default (?) means 6 GB RAM usage is allowed normally.
So usually it can process 4 "normal" workunits with 1 GB, making it use 100% of its threads.

When you now change the preference to 4 GB this would change the capacity to only one workunit.. so a 75% bonus would be needed to offset this.
However considering that the machine will likely not only process these monsters or might have other projects running at least +25% seems like an appropriate amount imho

Some work preferences would still be nice, assuming that a lot of people just want to crunch without looking into the preferences every few days.
Maybe just send maximum 1-2 of these "monsters" to each user or let them decide manually if they want more.

I don't want my CPU cores idle "waiting for memory" and I can't check all day long.

I can't upload this Task https://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/workunit.php?wuid=1029331860 . It is stuck for two days now. Always uploading to 100% but not disappreaing from the transfer tab.
Restarted BOINC manager etc. without success.
While the file is uploading (not waiting, but with the elapsed time counting upward), select Activity, "Suspend network activity." Give it a second or 2, then set it back to "Network activity based on preferences." This can often get a stuck transfer unstuck.

I tried this however without success.
BOINC however gives me an error:

I would like to see project badges like WCG has them (Bronze/Silver/Gold) and so on for several contributions a user has made to Rosetta or badges when a user or team predicted the lowest energy structure for a wu and so on. Im not that kind of achivement hunter but I think a lot of people could be motivated by this to join rosetta.

most of the time I only read the stuff you write and remain silent. but i haven't crunched for R@H for weeks at home now, since my scheduler download problem is still there. Just asking myself why am I here ? I guess I am bored from tv and should go to bed now. bye :)

Well, I could not participate on CASP 8 as much as I wanted, because I had a lot of problems with my computer at home connecting to the rosetta servers.
On the other hand I am still trying to establish distributed computing for science and for bigger computing things at the company where I work. And I am making really small steps. First time I asked the "IT-boss" (about one year ago) his answer was like "Grid computing ?Don't think we need this. What is this, anyway ?" ... Now he is at least "interested. Maybe next year we could start trying it on some computers here."
So I think we will start 2010 ;)

Personally, I think distributed computing in common and for science specifically is a way to help in solving big problems in a shorter time. In a time where computers become faster every day and most are only used for office stuff, why not contribute the unused computing time to science ?

(excuse the english, it's my first day ;)

Just if anyone is interested what happened in the meantime:

I crunched for WCG for about a week on this machine and just 5 minutes ago the master file download finally succeded (i wasn't even here)!

I still don't have any idea why but i'll donate some computing power of this computer to rosetta again.

bye :)

there was no edit button so excuse my double posting please.

just for your interest: reinstalling boinc didn't work. I'll keep rosetta in my project list and crunch for wcg with this host. maybe it is vista that doesn't like rosetta or the vista firewall is blocking rosetta only on this host (shared connection). whatever it is, I don't like it.

that's it. and this happens over and over again after the 24:00 hours (or earlier if i click the button).
i guess it may be a boinc or connection problem but why is Wcg running without problems and other machines too ?

I'll do a clean Boinc install tomorrow and find out. Hope my description isn't too confusing.

Hello everybody,

I guess my problem has something to do with the server problems discussed here since it appeared at the weekend after upgrading boinc so i'll post it here:

I still get no work from the project.

2 other machines with the same internet connection run fine now again, but my quad core is just getting work from WCG, not from Rosetta or R@lph (It did get work before). The Machine is just fetching the scheduler list (whatever this is) for Rosetta and R@lph over and over again with no result or error Message.

I lowered the share for WCG, i've even detached it and downgraded to boinc 5 with no result.

Any ideas or suggestions ?
