that's all fine and dandy.. though it would be better if they ran rosetta@home clients on their super computer when its not being used for weapons research (whatever that is)

Join on in the discussion @ pbs.org! If these people aren't ideal targets for recruitment, I don't know who is!

Are the Rosetta@Home admins interested in combining efforts with other prediction related projects? It seems to me a project like Predictor@home may have some good ideas but won't produce any results as a result of competition from projects like folding@home and rosetta@home. If they have a novel idea to test, knock down those communication barriers and start collaborating!

It would be cool if someone would donate some time to developing a facebook app that lets users show their rosetta@home stats to friends. I would do it, but I don't have the time.

I can't convince ANYONE to run any of these protein folding apps. I must be doing it wrong. Or maybe people just don't care about finding a cure for disease until it happens to them.

Even if I can't convince someone to run Rosetta@Home, I would encourage them to at least
run SETI@Home just for sake of making sure they understand the contributions of distributed computing . That gives me hope that I may be able to convince them later that Rosetta@Home is more important than SETI@Home.

I encountered one such argument where I was told he'd rather donate the money directly to Folding@Home than to pay the electricity bill to run it on his own computer. I'm looking to forming a reasonable argument against that.

I encountered another argument, that the CPU will run hotter. unfortunately this is somewhat true. Newer CPUs have SpeedStep that will reduce the voltage when not in use automatically. I'm not sure how to justify.

hi jonathon!

i vote feets, as long as it doesn't go to his head and project leader does have a good ring to it.

the submission to NPR has been written up and sent. i'll check back later to see if there's anything else i'm qualified to do.

That's the best idea I've heard so far! Did they ever get around to interviewing Dr. Baker?

Is it possible to write off the cost of electricity used as a charitable donation?
28) Questions and Answers : Wish list : Are you considering GPU usage? (Message 55187)
Posted 20 Aug 2008 by Profile Stephen
Post:
Just wonder what about possible GPU usage in future rosetta versions?
Some of distributed projects has beta versions of clients with GPU co-processing.

I would also like to see a GPU client. I have the money to go out and buy the best performing GPU (regardless of cost), but I would also like to see some benchmarks to determine which GPU I should buy.

The other issue with GPU is the question of if SLI will be a problem.
29) Questions and Answers : Wish list : PS3 clients (Message 55186)
Posted 20 Aug 2008 by Profile Stephen
Post:
A BOINC client for the PS3 already exists (www.ps3grid.org and www.dotsch.de).
Some BOINC projects (SETI, PS3Grid and Yoyo) supports the SPEs of the PS3, some other projects (SIMAP and Einstein) has a PPE only application for the PS3.

The biggest problem on the PS3 application is, that the source code must be rewritten to utitilize the full capatibilies of the PS3...

I would prefer to see a Xbox 360 client first.

I did paste at the back of my van a large print out of Rosetta@home (11x8) with an appeal: "DONATE YOUR UNUSED COMPUTER TIME TO CRUNCH MEDICAL RESEARCH"
I thought it was Eye Catching. But soon I realised cars drive close behind me to read it. It becomes dangerous I have to remove the printout.

saying "donate unused computer time" might make some people think there is money to be lost beside the electricity bill.

can a team join another team ? like an individual? but can look at its own contribution and its total contribution to the master team

I like that idea.

I'm planning to move my work to another computer. Is there anything besides copying C:Program FilesBOINCprojects folder to a new machine in order for me to make the transistion?
