What to do?

That's the important line of the error messages.

That usually means that one of the input files for the task was not downloaded correctly.

Lately, that has often been because the file was not in the correct place on the server. If so, you can't do much other than wait for a better task.

If anyone else who gets a task from the same workunit and has it fail the same way, you'll get a little bit of credit for trying to run the task.

I want my q6600 to run just 3 rosettas and anything else on the forth . running 4 boggs the system during surfing , my prefs say 3 only . but 4 Rosetta's run on a regular basis . any ideas ? the other projects are poem gpugrid and milky way .

GPU and standard CPU computing will soon be a thing of the past. There is a company call Adapteva that will, if things stay on schedule, be releasing a 1024 core FP chip in 2014. Although the chip does not have much memory like a gpu/cpu, its cost is much less and the cost to operate it is significantly less.

For example, Nvidia released a Titan GPU video card. This card costs $1K. It has 2688 cuda cores and a tflop rating of about 4.5Tflps. It needs a 600w power supply to run it as I understand. On the other hand, once Adapteva releases their chips, you could buy them way, way, way cheaper and they will consume much less power. In fact, the power savings will allow you to afford more chips to add crunching power as you go.

Now, these chips need something to feed data to them. They are parallel processors. Adapteva has gotten rid of all of the overhead instructions and made their chips just for pure computation. A computer could download a Work Unit (WU) and load each parallel processor with a specific task. Once finished, it reports back to the computer for another assignment. You could conceivably have 500,000 cores siting next to your computer that will do some serious number crunching.

Now, I understand Rosetta may be a large program, however, like any serial programed cpu/gpu, they don't run every piece of code at the same time. They do it in a step by step fashion. This type of programing can always be reprogramed to work in parallel for the most part.

Rosetta needs to take a serious look into the near future and see where processing power is headed. Get ahead or be left behind, especially with us WU junkies.

All of my rigs are now showing these pop ups (W7 64 bit/W8 Preview 64 bit). I first noticed it last night and I've suspended Rosetta in BOINC and have returned to WCG. I'll monitor this thread waiting for a resolution before switching back to Rosetta.

But the messages come up when I open Boinc Manager, there is a tab that says "Notices" and then a number indicating the number of messages in there.

I see... or I don't since I downgraded to the 6.10 Manager even on my 6.12.34 machine, the new versions are for me somewhat unusable without a real log (Messages) tab.

I too do not like the missing Messages tab! I KNOW there is still a messages box that can be brought up but I too liked the tab better!

I did the math.

I have a Quad Core Stock Clocked i5 3570K. It takes one core 3 hours to do one Rosetta task. On the weekends, the computer runs from 10:05 PM to 6:00 AM. Doing the math, during those hours, I only do 10 tasks. On the weekdays, It will be doing tasks from 9:05 PM to 2:00 PM the next day, and with that math I will only be doing 21 tasks.

With the above math, am I even contributing to the project?

I'm having about a 2/3'rd failure rate on ALL my Rosetta work units since the 7.0.25 Boinc update. Reports back Client Error and Compute Error. This version of Boinc and my CPU are fine with SETI work units on all cores so I think the problem is specific to the Rosetta project and this latest update. Is this on the radar? Is a fix at hand?

NO...Rosetta does NOT support the Version 7 series of Boinc and has NO PLANS to change anything! They are quite happy with how things are going right now. Many of us have moved on to other projects as a result.

I did Einstein@Home for about 9 months and accumulated 10.6 M points. I have 8 Nvidia GPUs,from 9800GT to 480 GTX.In all that time I never got more than 4 crunching at once,and often only 2.Drivers in,drivers out,going back to earlier versions,troubleshooting,you name it. At Rosetta,I've made adjustments to my run time and buffer.Beyond that,I just look in now and then to see what my PC'c are up to. As money allows,I'm planning to go from 34 cores to 60,but GPU's are not in the picture near term.

I have ONE Nvidia gpu, a 560 Ti, and it is currently getting almost 500K PER DAY RAC there!!!

CASP has one side of things for automated structure prediction, but there is another side for human predictions (many of which are done with various degrees of automated tooling behind them).

CASP is for the world's scientific community. All researchers studying the subject are potential participants. It is not truly a competition. It is more done as a measure of the current state-of-the-art. At the end, the "winners" present to the others about their methods and ideas that they attribute for their superior predictions. So as the ideas are assimilated into the various other approaches and combined, the next round is always a greater challenge than the last.

When reference is made to Rosetta vs. the rest, it is just people rooting for their "home team" to do well and continue to demonstrate that science is progressing and that we're truly learning how proteins work. This leads to vaccines and treatments for many of life's diseases.

When I started with Rosetta@home, the project was graciously making good use of 15 TeraFlops of computing power. Dr. Baker said it had taken off beyond all expectation (of a campus-wide distributed system). He also said that ten times more computing power would really open new frontiers to the research he and his lab have dedicated their lives to. It is truly rewarding to now see the project churning at over 150 TFlops with people from all over the planet contributing to a common cause for the common good. Keep crunching!

Greg - this is one of the errors one of the errors people have been trying to get the sysadmins to address for several weeks. As you noted, there has been no status given by the project.

Noticed some very low energy calculations earlier so I closed the graphics and let them continue then later checked in. Both later stopped when I later viewed graphics.
Here is a record of the transfers at the time of the problem.

Is this the same machine you use to crunch for MilkyWay with? If so it could just be that your gpu is busy crunching and viewing the graphics is causing a conflict. If you do a right click on the Boinc icon down in the tray and click on 'snooze gpu' then view the Rosetta graphics does it still crash? Give it about 10 seconds to stop the MW crunching before viewing the Rosie graphics though.
