OK

> HyperV is Microsoft's own Virtualisation software, it's an optional programme.

OK, already disabled.

> Hyper-Threading is virtual processors, allowing a physical processor to act as 2.

OK, restored.

> Virtualisation in the BIOS is what allows virtualisation to make use of hardware supported Virtualisation features of the CPU.

Yes.

Seems to be working OK now.

Thanks.

Hyper V must be disabled.
Virtualisation must be enabled in the BIOS.

Grant. As discussed earlier I had already done that.

However, on checking I discovered that "Hyper V" is not used in the BIOS description. Instead a search on "Hyper" revealed it is Hyper-Threading.

I have now disabled that and all seems good.

Several files apparently processed with no error.

Thanks again for your assistance.

All python tacks are failing within a few seconds. A web search shows nothing useful.

Current version of Bionic/VB installed (7.20.2) OS is Win 10 21H2

What is the problem?

Thanks.

4) Questions and Answers : Windows : Boinc demands VirtualBox (Message 106553)

Grant, thanks for your assistance, its now running and successfully u/l results that are verified.

> You install BOINC with VirtualBox, and that installs VirtualBox.
> Processing a Project's Task that requires Virtualbox, BOINC will download the necessary files, and it runs.

OK, so the "VBox" that I created is redundant, will remove it. I see several rosetta boxes created.

> If it doesn't run, and HyperV is not enabled, (oh, and Virtualisation must be enabled in the BIOS)

OK, that was it. Turned Virtualization on and it runs.

> then it's up to the user & Google to search on the Stderr output from the Task(s) in question to see what it might be,

Unfortunately unless you know VBox, it is pretty unintelligible (see below).

> Why VirtualBox thinks it didn't run.

> VBoxManage.exe: error: VT-x is disabled in the BIOS for all CPU modes (VERR_VMX_MSR_ALL_VMX_DISABLED)
> Which could be because it's not enabled in the BIOS, or because HyperV is enabled, or because some 3rd party AV software blocks using Virtualisation, or a combination of all 3 (or possibly something else again).
That was it.

IMO, the problem is that unless you are familiar with VBox, the lack of app-specific guidance makes it almost impossible to figure out.

If projects want to use this method they really need concise and explicit documentation for users to encourage them to participate. I used SETI@home for a number of years. When it terminated, I chose Rosetta (and Folding@home).

I've been using computers since 1969 (not a typo) but as a user, not setting up systems or anything other than some minor programming (Fortran, Unvac 1108 assembler/JCL). I m aware of what VM's are but have never had the need to use one.

Thanks again for your help.

Grant,

Generally 0.25 days and 0.01 additional days is more than good enough. Rosetta requires all work to be returned within 3 days.

Changed to 0.25 days.

Whatever that is???

>BOINC will get whatever files it needs in order to process work for any project you are attached too.

Almost all the Python projects terminated within 30 sec with "Error while computing "

But what is the error????

My original question was how to set up VBox/Python to run this, ie explicit instructions and links to all necessary files so I can see what I am doing.

Thanks.

However VBox seems to want Python installed.

Dennis, thanks for the quick response.

>Yep.

> Running Windows, HyperV must be disabled (in Add/Remove programmes) in order for VirtualBox to work.

It is already off.

>And since you did get a Python Task that errored out because VirtualBox couldn't setup the Virtual Machine, you'll probably need to go to your computer in your account, click on Details, and down near the bottom should be an option relating to Python Tasks. If the button says Allow (or something similar), click on it.
Yes. already done that and it has since d/l some python tasks.

However, I have done nothing (no instructions) to "install" Python or anything else in VB.

Does the Rosetta file contain everything needed to run?

Looks like you are on the other side of the "Big Pond" to me...

Trouble getting Python set up under Win 10 with VBox.

I seem to have Vbox installed and "attached" to Rosetta. Rosetta is set to recognize Python and has d/l a couple of files but is still processing v4.2 files.

However VBox seems to want Python installed.

Where do I find explicit instructions to do this *including* links to any necessary files that do not require "compiling" or anything like that?

Thanks.

So someone else's software is always a problem, is that what you are saying? When theirs is the only software making the claim, yes.
But how is that known unless someone asks?
What you are saying is "don't bother us".
It's a shame you didn't bother reading the last line in my previous post.
*shrug*

Then why didn't you just say that (I did read it...).

Of course, you could have said that in the first place.

This sort of discussion just puts people off.

EOT = don't bother to reply.

IMO, not a reasonable approach.

No, the Rosetta software is the problem.
No, it's not.
Software that says there is a problem, when there isn't, is faulty. Broken. Not working. So the producers of that software need to fix it.
It's called a False positive, and it happens all too often when AV/Malware companies get sloppy.

Unless you know 100% the issue is false bypassing the check is a risk.
And since Rosetta isn't a problem, it's not a risk.

So someone else's software is always a problem, is that what you are saying?

Unless you, personally, know that Rosetta is absolutely safe, by testing and does not trigger any known tests then it needs to be confirmed.

That is what should be happening with *both* parties.

Bitdefender is aware of the issue, but what is the Rosetta project doing?

The reason for posting the issue here is to advise Rosetta and other users of the issue.

Advise Bitdefender there is a problem with their software that they need to fix, and point them here to Rosetta's web site.

Yes, there are 2 sides to the issue. Rosetta code *appears* to be ransomware. Bitdefender is doing it's job.

Both sides need to know what is going on, so both have been advised. And both need to look at it.

Allowing bypass of check is not a fix.

It is when the check is the problem.

This morning I am getting repeated warnings from Bitdefender that rosetta is trying to install ransomware.

So far files are are flagged as "recovered" (implying reset to prev versions).

This appears to be an ongoing problem as previous msgs have noted it.

A fix?

Allowing bypass of check is not a fix.

Thanks.
