Switch to using SSL (Secure Socket Layer)
(Message 97473)
Posted 20 Jun 2020 by Yavanius Post: I'm still looking for this in linux flavours. The latest BOINC version can be found at this PPA: https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/boinc (Visit the link, don't just add that URL) Gianfranco maintains BOINC for Debian/Ubuntu. No need to wait for the latest version to get added to your Linux distro archives. ~Yavanius |

Outage notice
(Message 93452)
Posted 5 Apr 2020 by Yavanius Post: it was pretty common that when SETI had a long outage (like when somebody stole the cable that was their Internet connection) Actually, I believe it was a with a backhoe that some thieves were trying to dig up the hill to SSL and ended up truncated their fiber connection instead of finding a nice copper line. Never heard an explanation how nobody noticed heavy machinery operating in the middle of the night...[/s] |

CoronaVirus
(Message 92191)
Posted 24 Mar 2020 by Yavanius Post: A lot of people are interacting with Folding@Home team on FB/Twitter 'cause the simulations on Coronavirus. Actually, it's because of nVidia. nVidia decided to make an announcement about it without letting Folding@home knowing ahead and they got hit with a rush. The project isn't down but sometimes it may take more than one attempt in regards to feeding work and results. That's happened on BOINC projects too either from high user demand and/or project issues. They aren't Amazon or Microsoft where they can just throw more servers at the problem. Any extra resources have to be configured and ensured to work with the existing infrastructure. ~Yav |

Rosetta@home Science :
CoronaVirus
(Message 92190)
Posted 24 Mar 2020 by Yavanius Post: Folding@home let's their contributors choose a preference of which cause they want to crunch. That's per CLIENT though and they note it's not a guarantee you will only get those. (Being client-based, there is no option for COVID with the current client.) Folding and probably Rosetta's reasoning is that certain targets require more computing power to complete. Unlike for instance WCG, Rosetta IS the actual project which entails protein folding. WCG is the platform (using BOINC) that various DIFFERENT projects run under. Folding@home is their own project and platform. There was some attempt to make F@H available on BOINC, but the person working on that left the project and with limited manpower... That said, it would be nice if Rosetta had a similar option to that of Folding@Home with the same caveats... Without downplaying COVID, Cancer's been here, Cancer is still here, Cancer will still be here when we get past COVID... so there's where my focus will be. ~YAV |

No work
(Message 90118)
Posted 1 Jan 2019 by Yavanius Post: It is no mystery. The server status says no "Unsent" jobs. They should put that in the FAQ... otherwise the server says NOTHING about not having work and you can't find out about this unless you use the Google search... ~Yav |
