41) Questions and Answers : Unix/Linux : upgrade 5.4.11 BOINC to 5.8.16 for Ubuntu 7.04 PC? (Message 40857)

The 5.8.x clients have some nice improvements over the 5.4.x clients, however there is probably not a compelling reason to upgrade if you would rather wait for your package vendor to post the new version. I would email them and ask if they would update the package.

Credit is granted per decoy. The amount granted is an average of all the claims per decoy for that workunit type.

Since I am not a computer buff, I have a question. Since windows 64 is getting information twice as fast to crunch as windows 32, will there be a significant increase in performance, or am I missing something?

No. In most cases the difference is negligable, that is why the developers have not felt too much pressure to make a 64bit version. The FPU (Floating Point Unit) is virtually unchanged in the two types of CPU, since most projects use the FPU almost exclusively there is often no performance gain. As mentioned before simap has a fairly large gain, because that project spends less time using the FPU than most projects. Programs really gain from the 64bit CPUs if they need large blocks of memory, or if they do a large proportion of integer operations.

Yep, however there was a bug in the server code. So the projects need to update to the 4/30/7 head for it to work. The 5.9.5 client seems to be working properly. The only project that has updated so far is BOINC alpha.

Many participants have found that installing outside of the "program files" tree will prevent this problem from occuring. My vista system is installed to "d:boinc" and it works fine.

Definately stick with the current version, regressing will not help since it is the science app that is responsible for checkpointing.

Please unhide your hosts. It does not show any sensitive information to other participants and may help in debugging. Click on my name at the left to see what info is displayed.

Hi.

My current OS is Vista64.
Yesterday I've installed the Boinc 64bit alpha version and tried to request units from rosetta, but I always become the following message from your server:

"platform 'windows_x86_64' not found"

When will be rosetta ready for the 64bit version?

not an answer to your question, but they'll implement a script in the next alpha versions that will download the 32bit version if no 64bit version is available.

The code is in the 5.9.5 version, however the projects have to update the server code with today's head (4/30/7).

The application does store it's state. However if you have a slow computer it may not make it to a checkpoint before you shut down. It is also possible that you are looking at different tasks, the names all look the same to me without detailed notes.

Both should go up. The average is like a speedometer, it is a rate of credit granted. The total only goes up.

Once all the tasks assciated with that host have been removed from the database you can delete it. If the CPU and OS have not changed you may be able to merge it with the new host sooner though.

I definately recommend waiting for the 5.9.5 version before trying it on win 64. There is a serious bug in 5.9.4 were it will not send the proper alternate platform. This means you will not be able to get work from any project that does not have a 64 bit app. Currently the only projects I know of that have 64 bit apps are pirates, nanohive, and riesel sieve, only the seive is consistantly handing out work right now. Once 5.9.5 comes out you should be able to get work from any project that has updated their server code since 4/19/7.

You do need a different account for each project. However you should be able to attach multiple hosts to the same account at the same project.

The alternate URLs will not work with the more recent clients (any of the 5.x.x versions I think). Using an account manager sounds like the best solution.

One thing to note is that if you do not have written permission to run BOINC on computers you do not own you can get into severe trouble.

'50' is a project settable limit, so may be some other number.

I don't think that is settable. I can not find it listed in the description of config.xml. That is were I would expect it to be set if it was settable.

You are correct a better way to do this may be needed for projects with multiple classes of tasks. The other way should still be good for projects where there is less variation in task complexity. I sent an email to the developer's list pointing to this thread.

If my memory serves me correctly it is closer to d) none of the above.

1) A clean scheduler will issue results randomly from the available pool.

2) If a result is deemed unsuitable for a host it is prioritized so that work that has failed to be sent to a host will be attempted before a clean result is attempted.

The server will generally attempt about 50 results per RPC. If none are suitable then you get the no work message.

This may be outdated information. It was accurate prior to the implementation of locallity scheduling. Locallity and HR schedulers work differently.

edit: The design goal is to get bad workunits out of the system. The prioritization is by incrementing a variable called infeasable_count associated with the workunit. Once that reaches a project settable threshold the workunit is automatically cancelled.

The exited with zero status message can be ignored. The can't rename state file is a real problem though. Check the permissions in the BOINC folder. You may also want to exclude BOINC from your virus scans.

I have never seen this.
But it sounds like the new memory settings in 5.8.8 could do this.

Please post this on Number cruching board instaed more people read
and answer questions there.

It may also be that you have your preferences set to throttle CPU usage. When you enable that setting BOINC processes or suspends for one second at a time.
