I want my q6600 to run just 3 rosettas and anything else on the forth . running 4 boggs the system during surfing , my prefs say 3 only . but 4 Rosetta's run on a regular basis . any ideas ? the other projects are poem gpugrid and milky way .

try: tools -> computing preferences -> on multiprocessor systems use at most: 75% of the processors.

You can also do it on your pc and it will be on a pc by pc basis, meaning if you have muliple pc's you can set it differently on each one, by going into Boinc Manager, tools, computing preferences and making the same change. Be sure to click okay to make the settings work.

I tried that but it cut out a core totally I just want rosetta to run 3 max and the fourth run another project

can anyone tell me why my wifes laptop toshiba sat. keeps running work while it is in use? the machine is set not to run and the server is set not to run I am stumped it has a 1.6 intel dual core w/ 1 gig of ram, I think another laptop I set up is having the same problems and its bogging down the system any ideas btw it will snooze if told to also how long is the snooze timer

Robby, you want to review the "preferences" on that PC, which are a local override of your web-based preferences, that pertain only to that specific machine. And just make sure that the checkbox for customized preferences is checked (if that's what you wish to do) and then what it says in the "do work after idle for..." (the "advanced" pulldown, then preferences, then processor usage tab in the advanced view). If the customized preferences box is not checked, then it's just going to use the web-based preferences, which are defined for up to 4 different venues. You can see which venue this machine is considered to be at in the messages as BOINC starts.

I believe the snooze is for 30min.

YEA I did not mention the free download because most of my floppys have failed and when we tried it from a cd (iso ) it did not work . I felt it was not worth anymore of my time and I wanted it to work and work right so for 10 bucks it was done money well spent !! has any one pulled down orthos and fired it up yet?

Hey guys try a copy of memtest86 on CD for 9.95 + shipping and know your memory is good then /or download a copy of orthos http://www.overclock.net/downloads/138142-orthos-v20060420.html

if it errors out your double precision math ie your memory/machine can't handle the speed ( in my case I went from 3.4 to 3.33 ) I also have 2 1 gig sticks that will intermitanly crap out sometimes its ok just start a test[ blend - stress cpu and ram ] if it will run sometimes and not the other bad ram or slow it down a click at the time ....... makes for smoother crumching and the flacky ram well its going back on an RMA also 30 min test are plenty I let BOINC run during the test as well just do several a day for several days and see how you fair TEAM Highland Outreach

ON two different machines both running xp pro one an intel 1.6 and another an AMD 1.8 said hey 512 not enough!! need 256 more , the 1.6 is running with extra memory and the AMD is waiting for more, work uniys should be taylored for each machine so older machines will be happy too

35) Message boards : Number crunching : intel 6600 pausing (Message 44233)

It is a BOINC setting, not specific to SETI or Rosetta or other projects. If your machine runs at say 90%, that will be true for all projects.

It does increase your idle %, but it achieves this by "cutting out" periodically. There's no good way to make a Windows program (or Linux, or Mac) run at 90% (or any other %), so they just halt the running application for 1 second periodically to achieve the overall percentage you defined. If you set to 90% for example, it halts for 1 second, then runs for 9 seconds. You saw it halt about every 20 seconds, so I suspect you had it set to us 95% of CPU.

you are correct I just got a referance site to respond but it says project servers may be down so my prefs will not change is this something on my end because the servers were all on line last night

Did you happen to define the % of CPU that BOINC should use to be something less then 100%? This is in your General Preferences (see the [participants] link at the top of this forum page).

BOINC runs at the lowest priority allowed by your machine, so it should always try to run other tasks first. But, this setting basically gives you a way to tell BOINC that you want it to pause once and a while. Sometimes people do this to control heat/cooling fan levels.

you are correct it affected seti as well but I can not get Rosetta to update and see the new prefs I reinstalled the rosetta url as well

my bad !! this was the first time that I had used anything but 100% I thought it would increase my overall idle time by a few % but it literally cuts out the % from your prefs literally it stops

I just built a system asus p5b deluxe , with a intel c2d I started running seti because of the short work units while tweaking bios ,,,,I never noticed in task manager any dips in the 100 percent both cores untill tonight I thought it was a fluke because I had added rosetta , But , I ended up erasing boinc totally and reloaded with rostta only while watching the graphics the anamation stops at the same time as the task mgr dips the dips seam to go almost to zero roughly every 22 seconds there is very little on this computer and turning off pctools spyware doctor and Kaspersky 6.0 internet suite have no effect stumped big time!!!
