We are looking for those interested in science and reason to come join our team. We warmly welcome you to our forum as well at http://www.richarddawkins.net/forum/. Here you will encounter a very diverse and intelligent assembly of folks from all over the planet. BOINC distributed computing criticisms / rebuttals
(Message 51227)
Posted 7 Feb 2008 by chango369 Post: I am trying to draft up a comprehensive (if possible) list of the common criticisms that can arise from the use of BOINC for volunteer DC. I did some searching on the forum here but did not turn up an obvious thread, nor did I find anything germaine in the Q&A section. Apologies in advance if I missed it. What would be ideal are criticisms followed by reasonable rebuttals. Below are some example criticisms followed by an ATTEMPT at rebuttal. ----------------------------------------------------- criticism BOINC DC projects tend to encourage users to leave their computers on 24/7, bad for the environment. rebuttal Cost can be offset with low energy devices or green energy supplier. 24/7 computer usage not obligatory. criticism Who gets to use the data from Rosetta or other protein folding projects, Big Pharma? rebuttal The Rosetta project is being conducted by a research laboratory at the University of Washington From Wikipedia One of Rosetta@home's goals is to "computationally" ... determine the 3D structure and function of as many proteins as possible, and to make this information available to researchers worldwide at no cost. ---------------------------------------------------- I hope that someone can direct me to a good source of criticism/rebuttals or perhaps chime in with critcisms you have observed. I suppose I'm looking for the top ten reasons that people are hesitant to use BOINC, and I realize that I'll be getting a Rosetta perspective from some of you, but I'm also aware that many of you are engaged in other BOINC DC projects such as Einstein, CPDN, etc. What I am drafting is likely to reach a fair sized audience on the Internet, and I expect that it will generate a surge in interest in BOINC DC projects, with Rosetta figuring prominently among them. Thanks in advance to all who respond. |

Machine stuck with status Suspended benchmark
(Message 44758)
Posted 6 Aug 2007 by chango369 Post: Benchmarks should only last 60 seconds. Thanks for your nearly instantaneous reply. It was my natural impulse, but it's on a machine where the user is blissfully unaware of BOINC's presence, so I have to wait for the right moment to restart the machine... |

Posted 27 May 2007 by chango369 Post: Hi all. This version has been tested a lot on ralph, but please let us know if you see anything unusual. Thanks for all your posts on 5.64 before, too! Everything appears to running smoothly now. |

Problems with Rosetta version 5.67
(Message 41480)
Posted 26 May 2007 by chango369 Post: chango369 Thank you for your reply. I managed to get things running again somewhat. The SYMM_FOLD_AND_DOCK tasks take up a bit of memory, I have two running together now, one takes 532,000k and the other 24,000 k ... It seems somewhat disproportionate to me somehow...., I'm concerned about the tasks not finishing entirely though... see other post involving status ... |

Finally caught a look at the graphics ! ! It looked significantly more complex than any of the other tasks I had ever looked at. It was titled 'simultaneous docking and folding'... Does this utilize memory in such a way as to preclude two tasks from running in tandem?? |

(Message 41452)
Posted 26 May 2007 by chango369 Post: Hi all. This version has been tested a lot on ralph, but please let us know if you see anything unusual. Thanks for all your posts on 5.64 before, too! Update: I think I had the memory percentage set too high at one point. I now have general preference set at 50% swap 75% memory when in use and 90% when not in use... and at least I'm able to do other things (like type this post for example!) when boinc is running One major difference is that on my system, two tasks were able to run on 5.64 ... now one task runs and the other waits on memory.... In 5.64, both were able to run in tandem.. any guidance out there?? |

I'm starting to see some unusual behavior on my laptop. Everything running slow... Can someone tell me what the default preference settings are? I didn't know that there was a new version, and started tweaking my preferences. NO I'm not sure what's wrong... Help ! |
