1) Message boards : Number crunching : problems with minirosetta graphics (Message 76059)
Posted 22 Sep 2013 by gazzawazza
Post:
hi all

Very simply, I'd say about 50% (or more) of the time I'm NOT getting any graphics with minirosetta. As I mostly crunch via the screensaver, I just get a blank screen or a blank graphical mini window, if I'm crunching while the PC is in use.

The only other symptom is that my mouse pointer is a 'waiting' symbol.

It's not that I'm being impatient. I've left things for an extended period of time yet nothing gets rendered. On other occasions I can confirm that I've seen the rosetta graphics.

I've had a quick check and recently returned tasks have been successful / no errors.

Any ideas?

Platform is vista home premium 32 bit.
BOINC v7.0.64
rosetta mini 3.46.

Thanks,

Gary

hi all

I've just realised that a task I'd been crunching for a while (I'd got probably 2-3 hours elapsed on it and I think about 30% completed) had just randomly restarted itself.

However, I'm not sure which thread to post to on this matter.

My platform's vista 32 bit.

Here's an extract from my event log from today. I've filtered just the Rosetta entries:

Please note though that in the unfiltered log, the entry immediately prior to the "... exited with zero status" statement (at 16:44:41) was at 15:40:02 I.e. 55 minutes earlier. So, there's no recorded event to give us a clue as to why this task "exited with zero status but no 'finished' file".

I suspect as well, in hindsight, this isn't the first time the task has restarted (see last entry in log), since I'd swear the task has been 'crunched' for some time and I feel, whenever I've glanced at it's level of completion, it's typically been around 30%.

Hope that makes sense.

The log states that I might need to reset the project, if this keeps happening. Do you think this is appropriate action or would you like me to do any diagnostic work for you?

Gary

You could try a detach/attach, or a reset of Rosetta from the projects tab.

Edit: I see you got a new result in. Hopefully everything will go smoothly now.

Hi Transient

Thanks for your kindness in replying and keeping an eye on things. Yeah, am now getting Rosetta tasks again. Seems like BONIC was just thinking about whether it could crunch Rosetta as well as all the other projects / tasks I'm doing.

Shame though that it took a week for my client to decide this - would like to think I'd be forgiven for wondering why I wasn't getting new tasks.

I think I read that a new build of BOINC is going to include reasons for not getting new tasks, which I think may mop up some queries (such as my one). As per normal, I can't find the the page where I read this lol.

Cheers,

Gary

25/10/2012 20:26:53 | rosetta@home | Not reporting or requesting tasks

This is saying that the BOINC Manager does not feel it will have time to process any new tasks from Rosetta at this time, and so it is not requesting any new work. BOINC attempts to estimate the average amount of time per day your machine is running BOINC, and other factors, and requests new work when it is fairly confident the work can be completed on time. And so at this time, it does not have that confidence. This can sometimes be due to tasks which poorly estimate what their completion times will be (i.e. the time remaining). Or due to recent changes in your habits with how you use the machine (if you begin running 24hrs a day rather than 12 for example, or visa-versa).

Bottom line, the underlaying cause of you not receiving any work is that you are not requesting any. Once the other tasks you already have get further along to completion, it will request work from Rosetta.

Hi Mod.sense

Thanks for the explanation. I swear I read that the way new tasks are requested has been recoded at some point in the 7.x clients and that BOINC effectively has to establish baselines (a high and low threshold of usage) before requesting new work?

If so, what I don't understand is how / why I've received, completed & returned tasks for all the other projects I'm associated with in the last few days, aside from Rosetta, despite basically not having been crunching at all since around April? If I understand the new scheduler process (even a little), I'd have thought that, having defaulted on tasks that I was issued with 6 months ago, would have created a dip in my projected ability to complete work I.e. I'd have thought my 'capacity' to complete tasks would be at issue with all the projects, not just Rosetta.

Having said all this, I know that I'm dumbing down the scheduler process significantly and there are multiple factors being considered before new tasks are issued.

I understand there's a more verbose log available (debug). Is it worth running this to try and establish why my client reckons it can't handle new Rosetta tasks at the moment?

Also, let's say, for arguments sake, that my thresholds for Rosetta are not accurate - can I reset them?

Gary

Hi all

Thanks for all the replies :)

@Polian

You don't see anything when you try and look at the task history because all the results from when you were last active were already removed from the BOINC database. (working as intended)

Ah... so you can only review a limited history of tasks? What's the timeframe? 30 days or something?

Odd that after a project reset it wouldn't get new tasks. Have you exited and restarted BOINC?

Yep, tried that 2 or 3 times (over the last couple of days) and tried updating the project too

@Transient

Checkpoints: They are only guaranteed to occur when a model within a task is generated. As far as I know the percentage of a task completed doesn't guarantee a checkpoint.

This is the link that indicated about percentage checkpoints. Obviously it's rather old:

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=669&nowrap=true#10374

@Mod.Sense

Please post the messages you get when you do an update to the project in the BOINC Manager. Have you modified any of the configuration settings? Are you running any other BOINC projects?

Here's a recent extract from my BOINC client log:

"25/10/2012 20:26:48 | rosetta@home | update requested by user
25/10/2012 20:26:53 | rosetta@home | Sending scheduler request: Requested by user.
25/10/2012 20:26:53 | rosetta@home | Not reporting or requesting tasks
25/10/2012 20:26:55 | rosetta@home | Scheduler request completed"

I'm not aware of having made any alterations to my configuration files. Certainly nothing specific to Rosetta (at least that I'm aware of). I know I logged into my account, when visiting this message board, but that was obviously after I'd been experiencing these issues.

And yes, I'm running a number of projects (and have done for some time, generally, without incident):

Climateprediction.net
Malariacontrol.net
rosetta@home
SETI@home
World Community Grid

I'm currently crunching tasks from all but Rosetta.

********* Re-posted from Questions and Answers: Windows Section ********

hi all

I don't know whether these are connected but I'm experiencing some problems with Rosetta.

I've taken a big break from crunching and on return my BOINC client (7.0.28) started high priority crunching on a couple of tasks which go back to May 2012.

FIRST PROBLEM:
These tasks don't appear to be saving I.e. the tasks don't seem to be generating checkpoints. I did some digging on the subject and only found old posts indicating that save-points should occur on every percentage completed.

As this doesn't seem to be happening, I've aborted the tasks.

SECOND PROBLEM:
However, before I aborted the tasks, I tried to find any insight into the problem and was checking out my results. Unfortunately, when I tried to do this, I only got the following error:

"Sorry, the data requested does not exist."

As I have 97005 credits, I would have thought some results should have appeared here.

Finally, I did read on the Rosetta homepage that you've been doing a network upgrade, so thought this might conceivably explain the results error but can't see how this would affect the generation of checkpoints (which I'm pretty sure is simply a localised action).

THIRD PROBLEM:
I've reset the project and tried to get new tasks but nothing's been downloaded to my BOINC client.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

Gary

PS sorry if I'm being a noob :)

Post:
Damn... have had a spate of computation errors again.

Out of the last 20 WUs, 8 have failed.

All seem to be "can't aquire lockfile - exiting" errors.

I've using Rosetta 1.97 and BOINC 6.6.38 on Vista Home Premium 32bit.

Also, all these lockfile failures have occurred without any A/V on my system (although I have since installed Kaspersky antivirus 2010).

Finally, I'm running BOINC in protected mode (as a service), cos if I don't I can't seem to exit from BOINC cleanly from the systray manager.

I hope someone can assist, as I don't get lockfile issues with my other projects and it seems like a waste of time to be crunching units, only to get a 40% failure rate at the end of it.

Thanks in advance,

Gary

hi all.

Sorry to say this but I'm still getting the odd "...exited with zero status but no 'finished' file" issue:

I've no idea whether this is Rosetta related or to do with my BOINC client (6.6.36) but it doesn't appear to happen with any of the other projects I'm crunching.

Hi all.

I'm still getting the odd computation error (please see previous thread: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=4933).

However, this has been the only WU failure since the 21st June 2009.

The symptoms are that a task repeatedly restarts (having exited with zero status but no 'finished' file), then when complete the output file is absent (or at least that's what's being reported in the BOINC client logs).

My other projects seem to be running without issue.

My current setup is BOINC 6.6.36 (running as a service) on vista home premium SP2 (32bit), running Rosetta 1.80.

I do have Kaspersky antivirus 2009 installed but real-time scanning was disabled for the entirety of the time that this latest WU was running for (I only mention this because I know that A/V progs have been implicated in other crunching problems e.g. files getting locked).

Same old problem, although, thankfully, only one dodgy WU so far:

"17/06/2009 16:15:06 rosetta@home Restarting task lb_dk_ksync_sametemp2_hb_t306__IGNORE_THE_REST_12880_1474_0 using minirosetta version 176

Note this is using Rosetta 1.76 and BOINC client 6.6.36 (running as a service).

At least a portion of what has been causing problems was a batch of two of tasks that were created incorrectly. They are sorting it out. But nothing to do on your end. A project reset isn't helping. It is just getting you new tasks that don't happen to have the problem. It will be hit and miss while the problem tasks are purged from the system.

Sorry for the confusion and the problems.

hey mod.sense

Thanks for the update.

Glad to hear the team have ID'd the problem(s).

I was only doing project resets to be methodical and to make certain I was receiving the latest Rosetta project files (while also insuring against any local dodgy/corrupt files).

Btw, I'm successfully running BOINC client 6.6.36 (as a service) and Rosetta 1.75 on Vista.

I haven't had any problematic WUs for a few days now, nor have I had any file-size mismatches during downloads either.

Gary

Ok...

Using client 6.6.31 & rosetta 1.75, this one seems to have worked:

"12/06/2009 03:39:56 rosetta@home Computation for task lb_alnmatrix_threading_alncap__hb_t315__IGNORE_THE_REST_12578_4311_1 finished"

This hasn't:

"12/06/2009 02:13:31 rosetta@home Output file tails_homnative_relaxed_9b3a_m10_p00_SAVE_ALL_OUT_12749_1842_1_0 for task tails_homnative_relaxed_9b3a_m10_p00_SAVE_ALL_OUT_12749_1842_1 absent"

and neither has this:

"12/06/2009 09:20:47 rosetta@home Output file lb_retrodali_1_hb_t331__IGNORE_THE_REST_12761_1161_0_0 for task lb_retrodali_1_hb_t331__IGNORE_THE_REST_12761_1161_0 absent"

Also, I've been having various comms issues, although it looks like I was able to eventually download them though:

"12/06/2009 03:40:38 Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site

Do the staff / dev team have any idea what is wrong, cos rosetta 1.75 clearly hasn't sorted things out?

Thanks,

Gary

PS I was thinking that carrying on posting errors may or may not be helpful to fixing the(se) issue(s) and wondered whether reviewing my results directly might be beneficial? If so, if you let me know how to do this (given I have to login to review my results), I'll gladly help out...

Also, do we know whether the problem lies with Rosetta or with the BOINC client?

I've just noticed that BOINC 6.6.36 has been released. I've been unable to establish what's changed from 6.6.31 (the release notes only refer to v6.6) but will install and report back.

Unbelievable! grrr

I must had jinxed things with my previous post. It's started again:

"12/06/2009 00:30:59 rosetta@home Task tails_homnative_relaxed_9b3a_m10_p00_SAVE_ALL_OUT_12749_1842_1 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
12/06/2009 00:30:59 rosetta@home If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project."

although, oddly, this one hasn't produced the same repeated messages:

"11/06/2009 23:41:39 rosetta@home Starting lb_alnmatrix_threading_alncap__hb_t315__IGNORE_THE_REST_12578_4311_1"
