Posted 18 Nov 2009 by Sailor Post: Go through all Workunits until you find the matching one, quite some work I guess ^^ About the Phenom II: My x2 550 wasnt getting those 22,6, I saw your numbers and they avarage out higher then mine did. I would agree that sharing the L3 to 4 instead of 2 should lower the credits granted, obvsiouly it doesnt? weird. What clock speed are you running? Mine is running at 3,1 Ghz (stock) and the avarage was around 20~21 credits per hour. My brothers C2D e8400 is getting a good ~30 credits here tho. Maybe wasted is a bit too mean to say, but I´d like to use my CPUs where they are most usefull. I usualy look that up by comparing runtimes (like SIMAP) or credits (like Rosetta) to other type of CPUs. Then I see my x2 550 does better at SIMAP then a Q9450, which compared in Rosetta is up to 33% above me - easy choice for me, eventho I agree that Rosetta Sciene is very worth the crunching time. btw my first reply to you might have been a bit harsh, rough day yesterday, sorry for that... |

Posted 17 Nov 2009 by Sailor Post: Where did I say Simap is the same science as Rosetta? Nowhere, please read carefully. What I said is that both projects are about proteins, so someone interessted in Rosetta might aswell be interessted in SIMAP; when looking for a replacement project. Then I said, Phenom II are scoring better then older Phenom and K8. fact. he has an "old" Phenom I, that is wasted here. fact. Your Q6600 still scores better then a Phenom II Dual Core, a newer C2D like e8400 again scores better then your Q6600. fact. In SIMAP your P II 545 would process WUs faster then the Q6600 - prove that SIMAP is a better project then Rosetta for these type of CPUs: PII 550 vs Intel q9450: http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/workunit.php?wuid=1628546 Where am I standing wrong? |

Posted 16 Nov 2009 by Sailor Post: AMD CPUs in general score very bad in Rosetta, one of the reason ive pretty much stoped crunching here (+the bugs ofc), cause I think the CPU time is somewhat wasted. Your results look very much like what I was getting with my old AMD K8 dual core, the new Phenom II scores a little bit better, but still is far away from what C2D CPUs get done. You might want to try a different project on the AMD quad, SIMAP scales very good on AMD CPUs and has loads of work to send out. Its also in the same sciene area as rosetta. |

Cheap dual-core build on NewEgg for R@H
(Message 55912)
Posted 20 Sep 2008 by Sailor Post: Thx for the infos, that should be enough to make conclusions. I just had a look over at QMC@home and looked for E4xxx and then E6xxx/E8xxx CPUs, and when you find CPUs running at the same clock speed, they earn the same credit, unlike here. So L2 cache really makes the difference here. My conclusion would be: If you plan to build system only for Rosetta, this doesnt leave many CPUs to chose from, The Intel E8xxx series or the new Quads with big L2 (Q9450 and higher). Just wondering if even more L2 cache then those CPUs have would help even more. |

Posted 20 Sep 2008 by Sailor Post: I think the L3 cache is pretty useless here. I was just looking around for some scores from Barcelona/Phenoms, who have this L3 cache also and i found some numbers: AMD 8358 SE (thats a 2,4 GHz Barcelona quad) goes from 34 to 39 credits/3 hours link AMD Phenom x4 9550 ( 2,2 GHz Phenom Quad) is in the same rage, with some hitting around 25 credits link so on the x4 9550 I see pretty much the same numbers like on my x2 4200+, the run the same clock speed, the same cache, the L3 cache seem to make no difference nor the newer K10 technology. The 2,4 GHz Barcelona isnt pulling away either, so core-per-core I dont see an AMD with 512 kb cache thats going passed my old 1024 kb L2 cache 4000+. Now when you look on an Intel CPU with loads of L2 Cache ( I was looking for a lower clocked C2D, couldnt find one so fast) , like this E 8600 the CPU gets around 3 times the credits then any AMD out there is able to pull. Now Im gonna search for an new Intel with low L2 cache, anyone able to find an Pentium Dual-Core E2220 or E2200 ? they have only 512 kb cache aswell, I wouldnt be surprised to see them get ~30 credits for 3 hours aswell, then the L2 thing would be proven I think :) |

If this is the reason, why AMD cpus are slowed down so massivly, then we will see Intel´s new Nehalem failing on rosetta aswell - maybe even more then AMD. Nehalem comes with only 256k L2 Cache, hence they introduce the same memory controller thechnology which AMD is using since the K8 / AMD 64 series. The L2 as a reason to why AMD is so bad in Rosetta is hard to accept, tho I dont see any other reason. I have 2 pretty similar CPUs, a 4000+ and a 4200+, they differ by 200 MHz in clock speed, and the 4000+ L2 cache is 1024kb vs 512kb on the 4200+. Now in Rosetta, the 4000+ can get 45~50 creds for 3 hours, while the 4200+ never goes near that (around 30), when im working on this machine, I get horible results like 12 credits for 3 hours. This would also support the L2 problem argumentation. Well, lets wait for the first Nehalems to crunch Rosetta then :) |

Posted 15 Sep 2008 by Sailor Post: A X2 2.8ghz AMD only has a 2mb processor cache, the E8400 has a 6 mb processor cache. The bigger the processor cache, the more credit you are granted, especially for work units that are cache sensitive, like the Rosetta mini. The Intel core 2 Duo's are the way to go for building a crunching machine, and they use much less power and electricity than an AMD. Thats right. On topic I have to say: If you plan buliding a system with the purpose of only running Rosetta, then dont use AMD CPUs. For some reason, any AMD is disadvantaged in Rosetta. I pretty much stopped it cuz its just too dissapoiting. And this for sure has nothing to do with missing computation power, in projects like SIMAP my old K8 AMD 4000+ runs head to head with highend Intel Q9550 and smokes any Q6600 - looking core per core and on default clocks. |

Posted 9 Jul 2008 by Sailor Post: This is such a sad story. I personaly think, people exploiting the system should get deteled from each project. About the inactive factor: Only one person needs to be inactive - the original founder. Then request leadership transfers, and no matter how many active members the team got, they wont be notified about this, and realise it only, when its too late (in meaning of them beein kicked). Lets just hope, things like that wont happen more often, now that this way on "getting credit" became public... I think I should check all accounts if my email notification works, not that our teams are worth stealing but you never know :/ I hope this gets cleared and Teddies get their team aswell as their credits back!! |

Im perfectly fine :) btw: you still can get x2 4200+ in most stores, and now also for a reasonable price - just today i saw one for 64 €. Was thinking of exchanging my CPU, also with RAC in mind xD But that list is obviously a tough one, at least prices will stay low I guess... The 2,5 GHz Phenoms need to get moving, else a lot of peeps will put their money into Intel I think ^^ |

Posted 27 Sep 2007 by Sailor Post: Well if you look at price to performance, I think AMD is placed pretty good still. The QX9650 you mention in your post is around 990 € if im not wrong, AMD is no where near that with their actual CPUs. The 1,9 GHz Barcelona is @ 320 € and still can hold his position in some benchmarks against the much more expensive Xeons. I mean, its not like im blind or something, sure the QX9650 is a great CPU and overall the actual AMD CPUs cant reach that speed, but to me thats pretty much not interesting, as I would never spend 1000 € for a CPU =) When you go and look up the Intel pair in the Benchmarks to the AMD CPU, you will see that the AMD is placed better in the price. But yeah overall its a pity that the higher clocked K10´s still arent out, then we could say more about the performance. btw: I also dont know why they made such a hype around that unlocked 5000+, its not a bad thing, but nobody really was waiting for it ;) And yes the time for socket 939 dual cores is over, I think there was just no room left for them in the pricing, when you see how many different AM2 CPUs are out there, and they are all within a price range of 150 € heh :< |

Yes, from what I read, the Penryn gains speed from SSE optimizing,, and if im not wrong, Rosetta doesnt use SSE at all - thats why I think there wont be any performance gains. The real advantage should be, that the Penryn can go higher clocks, due to the 45nm production. The 12 MB cache might be usefull aswell, hard to say right now :) |

Posted 27 Sep 2007 by Sailor Post: I dont know what you are up to ? Intel just released their 6X50 CPUs, with their Core 2 technology - why dont you moan about that? that they release "old" technology and just talk about their 45nm Penryn ? But ofc the 6X50 were the biggest invention since the lightbulb, right ? ;) Point is: there is nothing wrong it releasing such CPUs (goes for AMD and Intel), as long as there is a market that wants it. I myself would have loved to see AMD supporting even older technologies longer, read here: socket 939 dual cores (and im not alone with that) PS: I help you again: there is your missed new technolgy : Barcelona Quad |

Posted 27 Sep 2007 by Sailor Post: Greg, you can stick a dual channel pair togehter with any other Ram on this CPU, because the 754 AMDs dont have a dual channel controller (thats basicly their difference to Socket 939 CPUs). Also, if you plan to use dual channel in the future, you need exactly the same sticks, even different weeks of produce from the same brand might not work - I had this once with a pair of 256 MB DDR ram, that where exactly the same, only the week of produce was different, resulting in my system crashing with a bluescreen pretty often. When you use 4 Ram sticks and want to go dual channel, each pair can differ in brand and size. |
