Hi guys,

I've ben running a twitter feed for R@H. Here's the original thread from where I started the feed.

http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=4850

and here is the account http://twitter.com/Rosetta_at_Home

Obviously, it hasn't led to a boost in users by the millions, but I'm hoping that at least some of you are less convinced that twitter is just a passing fad by now. It is a good way for getting exposure, some other boinc projects have followers in the thousands (and some posts reach thousands more through re-tweeting) so if done right it can definately be worth the effort.

I don't frequent the forum much any more, only check on it intermittently, so I'm hoping other people will help me keep the feed up to date, more than just re-posting the baker journal posts. If it's a colaborative effort, it wont take much work at all. pm me if you're interested, and i'll give you the password.

I've been reposting posts from science forum (mainly the Baker journal) and from the foldit! frontpage and blog. Is there any other source of rosetta news I should be covering?

It's quite a silly problem really. The program doesn't seem to recognize the 'alt' key needed to type in '@' so I cant give my email to set up an account and get the science puzzles.

I would have thought they had some kind of safeguard to ensure that they don't send out more work than they can handle? I'm not really expecting millions of new users over night though anyway, but it will surely generate some attention.

I'm in the process of composing an email asking David Baker for his blessing. Who are these project admin you speak of?

Alright guys, Rosetta@Home is now up on twitter: http://twitter.com/Rosetta_at_Home

Comments and suggestions are welcome. If you have Twitter accounts of your own, please 'follow'. If you're active in other Boinc related communities, post them a link. These things tend to grow exponetially, so help me hype it up a bit, for the greater good :P

I would also appreciate if a few more of you contacted me and were willing to contribute directly with keeping up to date.

>>> your opinion is irrelevant

Oh, really, whilst yours is not I suppose?

Did you not read my post? I thinnk I made my case quite clearly why your personal contempt for twitter is not relevant. If you think it was unclear, perhaps you will understand if I break it down in point form?

What is relevent is not anyones opinion, but the following facts:

1. Rosetta@Home depends on having contributers; the more, the better

2. The more people are aware of rosetta@home, the higher the probability that one of them will join

3. There are many potential contributers on twitter, who can be made aware of rosetta@home through twitter, as well as existing users, who will be encouraged to get regular updates.

@mikey, Yes maybe I'll do that. If anyone is interested in helping me out in keeping it up to date, or promote it, pm me, and I'll give you the account name and password. gotta run to lectures now though.

... and next month, a "barf" from vommit perhaps. If the developers spent all their time working on this weeks choice of daft messaging protocols we wouldn't need them, there wouldn't be any real news, only that "fart" from "anus" is now supported.

OK, I get it, you're not a twitter fan. However, your opinion is irrelevant. You're forgetting that rosetta wants to have as many contributers as possible, and weather you like it or not, twitter is immensly popular, and hence a good way to reach potential users and keep up interest among existing users.

Setting up a twitter account takes about 30 seconds and posting a tweet with a link to the baker journal, or other news stories would take at most 20 sec. Twitter may or may not be a passing trend, but I think its safe to say it will be around for another 2 years or so, so I think it would be a worthwile investment of time.

If you're worried this will take to much time, I can volunteer to run the rosetta feed myself, with the rosetta crews blessing, of course. However, I think it would be better if one of them did it, as they are in a better posistion to keep people up to date.

Twitter doesn't necessarily have to be about what you had for breakfast, this would be no different from the updates given in this forum, only that it has the potential to reach another couple of million people.

Unix is user friendly. It's just very particular about who it's friends are.

Why all Pascal programmers ask to live in Atlantis?
Because it is below C level.

Why do programmers always get Christmas and Halloween mixed up?
Because DEC 25 = OCT 31

I have an assignment to write a popular science type article from an academic journal article. I'd like to write about rosetta and distributed computing, anyone have any suggestions for a good article I could use as a base? I don't think science or nature will do, I think it has to be a more specialized journal.

Edit. Acually, nevermind, I found all the information I need: http://depts.washington.edu/bakerpg/
