Didn't imagine you'd actually print them tho!

FluffyChicken is correct when it comes to XP (and maybe Vista too).

XP home supports only one chip, but no limit on the number of threads (up to 64, I guess).

XP Pro supports up to two chips, but no limit on the number of threads (up to 64, I guess).

Yes,AFAIK that's an artifical limit made by MS in order to sell lower priced entry based OS's.

It's a shame if it's true with 2008. Especially that Intel is going to sell quad-core Xeons. So it makes 128 cores for Unisys ES7000/one.

If Linux has been mentioned...
I can run these systems on my server:
Red Hat Enterprise AS 4 for AMD64/Intel EM64T
Red Hat Enterprise AS 4 for X86
Red Hat Enterprise AS 5 for AMD64/Intel EM64T
SUSE Enterprise Server 10 for AMD64/Intel EM64T
SUSE Enterprise Server 9 for AMD64/Intel EM64T
SUSE Enterprise Server 9 for X86

All Red Hats have no limits. SUSE says that max is 128 for v10 for AMD64/EM64T.

If you have any experience, please, let me know which one is the best for BOINC/Rosetta.

Mateusz

Yes it is indeed a shame. but that market is 99% linux based for a reason tho.
Basiclly it depends on your needs and ease of use so I guess your best shot is to consult a network manager or some other exeperienced users.
I never worked with a SuSe so Im really not familiar with it.
Ive worked with red hat before and it was rather nice and simple(yep powerful), but that was about 4 years ago, so I'm pretty sure much has changed since :)

I alwyas thought Micorosft CPU limit was Physical Processors, not effective processors no of processors, though with Datacentre it may be different and they may be stingy ;)]

Nope, you can stack up as many CPU's as you want, the limitation is with the OS itself and the effective # of threads ("cores") it can take.

Chillerworks is indeed correct.

No Windows version supports more than 64 cores.

Unfortunately, Windows server 2008 ("Longhorn") won't change that either.

Linux is your best friend ITPC ;)

Sounds pretty Rosettish to me ; )

There are a few other hacks over the thread.

From page 5 : "let me finialize the step.

# cd /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-fc4# make install distclean# cd /usr/ports/net/boinc-client# make patch# vi Makefile

add

--with-boinc-platform=i686-pc-linux-gnu

after

CONFIGURE_ARGS=--disable-server

# make install clean
"

Page 4 :
"I got it working without the help of this thread.
After hours of searching and with some help I did simply add the line:

first you update your ports tree.
then go to /usr/ports/net/boinc-client
Then you add
--with-boinc-platform=i686-pc-linux-gnu
behind:
CONFIGURE_ARGS=--disable-server

Simply run: make install clean
Add following to the /etc/rc.conf to enable BOINC client:

boinc_enable="YES"

Then start BOINC client with

/usr/local/etc/rc.d/boinc* start

if you shutdown and restart the computer boinc will be automatically started as a service.

Now follow the instructions on how to add a project."

So it's basiclly some sort of a linux emulation so you got to have these
"# cd /usr/ports/emulators/linux_base-fc4
# make install distclean

or start sysinstall -> configure-> startup
enable linux

it will be automatically installed"

Since I know nothing about this you'll need to look it over and see what you can do .. GL

Glad it works :)

Maybe it would work for other projects as well .. should be tested though.

Hey, check this out :

BOINC + FreeBSD = Success

Yes it is on the WCG forums .. but it looks like it's designed for BOINC and not project specific. Might be worth to check if it works for Rosetta as well.

Thanks Bruce and Feet1st, all clear now.

am doing 50%-50% with rosetta and WCG now. still waiting to HPF2 to resume on BOINC though.

In another news, I just put the final touches on the paper describing the first round of results from the rosetta WCG project led by my former graduate student Richard Bonneau who is now a professor at NYU

Hi, thanks for the report. I am a little puzzled with the "rosetta WCG" part though ..

Does is it mean it will describe results obtained from rosetta .. or from HPF2?(WCG). or are they the same thing anyway?..(the science behind them - that is).

10) Message boards : Number crunching : RAC dropping, BOINC dropping comms (Message 32537)
Posted 12 Dec 2006 by Profile Faust
Post:
Well, since it happens every single night, I came up with some sort of a 'solution'.. or better say a quick glue fix.

I set up a simple macro using automated software that every <1> hour closes and re-opens boinc. so if your'e not around the computer and boinc dissconnects it would re-open it and reconnect(the thing you would normally do manually). you still lose some work, but better than losing a whole night or day.

Unfortunatley for me the machine is shared with other family members so ofcourse when they started using the computer and moved the mouse it all messed up. but it should probably work if your'e the sole user.

However, this is easily the most annyoing defect i've exeperienced with Boinc/Rosseta in my short era here. so I will probably look for another project to crunch up for instead of wasting so many clock cycles - at least until the issue resolves. unless it happens with all Boinc-releated projects - which would then mean it's a much bigger problem than I first thought.

I don't know if that's a problem - but I think it's very unlikely for my fastest machine to only get 3.29 credits for a completed WU :) (claimed crdit 42.04)

I don't see any errors and it also didn't crash.
Screensaver was also off.

Result

I'm also having the same problem Feet1st described in a dedicated thread - 'RAC dropping, BOINC dropping comms'. It happens alot lately. but I guess that's a Boinc issue.

Faust.

I'm not sure how serious this is - but anyway..

one of my hosts was physically removed&replaced and when I checked to see if everything works I pushed the graphics button and then it crashed :

Result.

One other thing that I saw was that FRA_2rio tasks sometime go completley dark for a few minutes in the graphic view fields('Searching_Backbone', 'Accepted' and 'Low Energey' and only 'Native' is shown).
sometimes they only show the edge or another small part of the shape.
than all of a sudden it gets normal again.

I don't know how frequently it happens, but it had happend more than once.

<stderr_txt>
# random seed: 3496105

</stderr_txt>

Outcome: Client error
Client state: Compute error

Should I worry about other WU's, or is it just a one time glitch?

Thanks,
Faust.
