Update :

We`ve lost over 50% of team CPU power overnight due to guys pulling out of the project. I know other teams are the same with the big guy`s with farms pulling out, that`s a lot of power. Some MAY come back when "No Work" and the compression issue is sorted, I suspect not all though.

Now you know why I may have seemed obstropolous yesterday...I was fighting for my team and this project.
Not all Czech`s bounce but I`d like to try with Barbar ;-)

Wasn`t being nasty Paul, just really felt it was something that needed clearing up as one of our team did try it on a machine that was having troubles.

Cheers mate ;-)

Neither was I...

Sorry if I came across that way ...

I'm going to stay the course, regardless of the roadblocks that appear. With Paul and his crew working the WIKI, Berkeley brains on the BOINC issues and Dave Kim and his crew working the project, I am confident that it will continue to evolve and grow. Oh and by the way, in this era of multi-gigabyte storage, a 20+ meg folder for Rosetta is no problem ...

carl.h

I am a project official. I understand your concerns and we are trying our best to communicate with participants. I'll try to cover some of the issues you brought up and are concerned about.

1. the "No work from project" issue is being actively worked on. Sometimes our servers, particularly the database server, just can't keep up with the demand. We are currently testing two new database servers which we hope will help resolve this issue. We also plan to add more scheduling servers to distribute the load (we added a new server recently). Are you currently having trouble getting work?

2. the download/bandwidth issue is also being worked on. Our project requires an initial large download (>30 compressed files ~10MB total) which are rosetta database files used by every work unit. These files get downloaded only once and then persist on the client. There are also a few work unit specific files that can range from ~2-7MB total (compressed) but usually on the lower end. We are working on reducing bandwidth by considering better compression methods. Also, results from recent experiments may give us an idea of how much input data is necessary for optimal results (we might be able to use less). In response to participant feedback, we are also going to add an option that allows users to increase the size of workunits, and thus decrease bandwidth.

One note, compression is not causing download problems. I do not know what you meant by this.

Also, from the FAD website:

Find-a-Drug .... was set up by Treweren Consultants, the company who developed the THINK software. ......The first internet based computing project which used the THINK virtual screening software was hosted by United Devices in collaboration with the Oxford University. ......Find-a-Drug has benefited from the experience of the earlier project. In part due to assistance from Intel, the latest version of THINK is approximately 40 times faster than version 1.03 used on the United Devices platform.

So it appears that many people were involved in FAD and it's software, not just one person.

We realize the message boards have become unweildy and hard to manage, so we ask for and greatly appreciate help and constructive feeback.

Dr. Kim?

over at FaD we also had a beta section where brave souls that wanted to donate computer time for raw testing were willing to take on the preliminary tests needed to be done with no credit granted before work was sent to the general public. there was feedback between keith and those guys about what the results were and he could solve problems before it all got to us. it served a great purpose in reducing the number of complaints and errors. would you consider doing something like that here? i'm sure you'll get a great number of volunteers. the key to making that a success is to have a seperate section of the board that's private for the discussion that's needed.

as for your message board, if you insist on keeping it as it is here, then you must breakdown the section listings differently. the three listed is too general and not enough. integrate the problems/questions into the "topics" listed below and expand the topic sections. i'd go on to suggest topic names but i need to leave at the moment for the doctors. rats

hey carl!??? put your thinking cap on darlin' and give us a breakdown of how you would section it out.......member to member support...known issues.....boinc issues....rosetta issues........no work........

Well Carl, Me thinks this is a case of the kettle calling the pot, so I have decided to leave Rosetta, as I do not like the company that has invaded, so tata...........Rules!! you should practice as you preach.......

By all means, 20MB or 30MB or 500MB or even 5GB on disk is not a problem at all.

The problem arises when a projects transfers lots of data over the Internet, like the 1GByte/month per 2GHz machine traffic, as some people reported

If the worst come to the worst, the minimum should be an OFFICIAL News Section (raed Only) and a Known Problems Section (read Only).

Any discussion about items in these two section can be started elsewhere.

As an example of what we mean see Here

but there are others such as WCG and Climateprediction...

Thanks Scribe and carl.h, When I get some time soon, I will come up with some titles and post them up for comments before making them official.

carl.h or anyone else who is getting the "No work.." problem, are you still seeing this at a problematic rate (a few here and there is not so bad as long as the client always has work). I modified the feeder last night to enumerate through 5000 results/wus instead of 1000 per database query. The feeder does not send work during the db query and unfortunately, the query takes a while on our current db server, so I hope this change will help.

I left Rosetta (for a while) because 20 out of 30+ machines were out of work yesterday morning....

David, I haven`t checked today but when Nite Owl who has 30+ machines comes on I`ll ask, he has had the biggest problem and is East Coast USA.

I certainly have not got it on this P4 this afternoon but work seems to have dwindled from what I had. 13 WU`s in a 2 day cache...whereas normally 20+

I`ll check the others and get back.

Just checked the other two...uploading results o.k. no new work being received or even mentioned.

8 on one and 10 on the other well below what they normally are on a 2 day cache. One has been online 3 hours , the other just, this one all day.

I get not requesting work on here...cache size changed maybe ? 13 would cover this for 2 day`s but it was more previously.

Please let me know if it becomes a serious problem (i.e. your client runs out of work completely). The new database servers (coming online soon after we set up some tests!) should help reduce the query time and I can try increasing the enumeration even more.
