Message 7724 - Posted: 27 Dec 2005, 8:56:46 UTC - in response to Message 7701.

One final comment on the matter. I have already asked that the "moderator" tag be removed from my name. I am, and will continue to be, a stubborn, opinionated, sarcastic S.O.B. whenever the circumstances warrant. I don't care in the least who has a problem with that, but some people are inventing a non-existent "because of the tag, it reflects on the project". Well, frankly, BULLSHIT. But since I have no wish to have the project harmed in any way that someone _could_ tie back, however inaccurately, to me, I've asked David to remove that ability from my account. I assume he can't do this until after the holidays, so you'll just have to deal with it until then.

Bill if you must you must, but......have a second account, as a Mod, but tell no-one here your new account name, then just carry on as normal being yourself, but when something wants Moderating log on, do it, log off.

Best of Luck.

I agree, your not going to please 100% of the people 100% of the time, it just comes with the territory Bill. I think your doing a fine job & I would hate to see you give the Moderator position up.

Ah Scribbles :)

Now that's a man that knows all about moderating in Distributed Computing forums...

(all though his 'job' over at Grid.org (UD) was much easier... asking a question?, didn't like the post, wrong colour or just couldn't be bothered to reply = delete post, simple)

P.S. :-p, just jesting yeah ;-)

There has been some concern that results that should be granted credit have been being deleted from the web pages. All of these results have been archived, and credit will be granted for those that meet the criteria established by the project. It is currently anticipated that the credit granting script will be run on Monday.

edit - this post disappeared earlier for some reason...

I think anonymous Moderators are a REALLY bad thing.

Yes, there seems to be some mysterious and anonymous message monkeying going on here.

Now undeleted - it was uncalled for and irrelevant but if it matters to anyone it can be there.

Bill asked to be removed as moderator so he could reply freely on the boards, since people had problems with a project participant acting as moderator but not having any official status.

Two new "moderator" accounts were then created in addition to the existing staff ones; we both have authority from the project to manage the boards and respond officially when necessary, without getting into the same problems he had. Our identities are known to the project staff, so if you have a problem with something I do, "Moderator7" is just as good an identification as "Angus" is.

And where are these posts? Not on the Home Page or Technical News, or anywhere else I can find.

Why wouldn't David or David post themselves? Why have this anonymous 'channeler' thing going on? At the very least, why not attribute the information to the source as you did after being prompted?

What's the problem Angus? Do you hate not knowing what you're shooting flames at? Scared it might get you or your team in trouble? All of a sudden someone shows up with some new and pertinent info, and you get all jumpy and scared about what they're presenting. You act as if you've seen a ghost.
Who is this? How are you getting this info?

Either a ghost or an anonymous phone call. Personally, I like the concept of anonymous forum moderators (for namesake, I'll refer to them as "ghosts"). When the ghosts are running the board, they can get in there, make things smooth and get out. When the forums are running smooth, information runs smooth. When information runs smooth, crunching runs smooth. When crunching runs smooth, a project accomplishes what it was set out to do. The simple fact that you can't know about what you're flaming is somewhat exciting. I like watching people squirm. I don't think the Ghostbusters are going to help with this one. And to ghost #7 and others, keep up the good work. Let's make this place run and keep the instigators running.

Hmmm... time for me to throw my oppinion in.

First I didn't bother to open this thread, because I thought it was all about River~~'s stretched thread, but when I saw the numbers of posts and how it growed, I became curious and wanted to see what could be said in so many words about threadstretchings. And a lot of familiar alias' popped up and a discussion, I didn't expect, and this rolled out before my eyes.

First, River~~'s and others suggestion about keeping the original name of the thread and starting a new thread for each is very recommendable. Then people know what the topic is, when they open that thread.

For the moderators job I'll say, you can't please everybody. Some people are looking for quarrels, and others are easily miffed, so no matter what a moderator is doing or saying, people will complain. These people are not payed, they are doing it, because they are asked by the staff, and because the staff have confidence in them, that they will do a proper job. If the staff becomes aware of, that a moderator is not doing a fair job, I'm sure he/she will be removed. I think these people, who agree to take the honorary job, means well, and I don't think they in general are ill-will'ed people, but I do think they must have a masochistic gene though.;-) <- Hey, look at the smilie, just kidding, ok, I was joking!

For Bill Michael as a person and about the performance of his task as moderator, I'll say, that I've experienced Bill as a very skillfull, helpfull, and positive person, who has been willing to help people with problems. He has untiringly helped people and explained things connected to BOINC and Rosetta to an extent, where I would have runned away screaming! No, my patience would have run out long before! Some people have been very demanding and Bill has also throwed a couple of sarcastic remarks in their direction, but again, seen in the light of my patience, his patience has been like an angels. I have seen him as a fair moderator, trying to do his task as fair as he has seen it possible. And again, he's not God here, so any of his decisions could be appealed to the project people, the real "Gods" here, and I'm still sure, that if they see any questionable decisions from him, they would remove him from the task in a minute.

My issue is with someone who we've never seen or heard of before, don't know if they are part of the project staff or not, giving un-attributed information about credit granting - which IS a big deal to a lot of people. It would have benn very easy to quote the emails (I guess they are emails, since the posts can't be located) the first time and the post would have been accepted at face value.

There was no annoncement that new moderators had been assigned. It did seem too much of a coincidence that the 'Moderator7' account was created the same day the Mr. Bill said he would split himself into two accounts - one for moderating and one for posting- and the project people were still on holidays.

I think Bill has been doing a fantastic job, and we are very greatful to him for this! We just don't have time to go through all of the posts everyday, and many of them deal with non-rosetta boinc user issues that I can't answer (In fact, it still isn't clear to us what fraction of the remaining problems are due to rosetta bugs or boinc problems). Also, it is impossible to please everybody all of the time, and he is putting in a lot of effort--so be easy on him! Overall, I think that expert volunteers will play a very important role in this project as it grows.

We are almost done with the analysis of the last two weeks of results, and I will be posting a summary in a new "science news" section on the web page in the next few days.

Thanks David for the info. :-)

Yes, I think you guys in the projects really depend on the volunteer corps of fiery souls, who bother to sit day after day and read all the threads. I must say about myself, that I don't bother though. I prefer to comment where I have something to add. And as I said in my previous post, my patience is not big enough to read in all the threads about the same problems. So I really admire those, who do, and I think we all owe our gratitude to these.

@Angus: Get over it! I have been in Seti BOINC since it went public July 2004, and I have participated in several projects the past year, and I'm active in three projects at the moment, so all in all, I have accounts in 7 projects, and have participated on the boards of them all, and I have never seen any announcements of appointed mods.

Mods come and go, and some stay for some time and others disappear after a while, and that's ok. Who they are, well, after being a regular on the boards, I know several of them. Some do I know well and even have mailed with them, and others are strangers.

I say what I want, within the rules read at the top left, when I post. I have even flamed Matt Lebofsky in the now dead Flame of the Day thread at Seti, because he posted something, I found was a stupid remark. If you participate in a discussion with a proper language and in a respectfull way, why should anybody bother about mods, who they are, and what their oppinions are? They can participate in the discussions just as well within the same rules.

And a final comment, if we don't bother to read a person's remarks, we can use the Ignore function and filter him/her.

Dixi!
