Try these setting

Disk and memory usage
Use no more than 30 GB disk space
Leave at least 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 85% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 360 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory

By the way, I think since the default setting of \'now 100GB of disk space\' is both overkill and misleading.

When I first joined I had the same problem... My computer has 30gig of space, so it wouldn\'t download any work. Because the phrasing of the option is so confusing I kept on trying to add more space in the preference, wondering what sort of project would use 500gigs. Only when I turned it down to less than the ammount of free space I had on my HD did it start to work.

Now, if you take into consideration that 1)most people don\'t have a 100Gb of free space and 2)all that required messing around with the settings may distract and discourage new users and 3)at the end of the day Rosetta roughtly takes 15megs - one wonder why that setting doesn\'t have a default of say, a hundred meg only.

Any thoughts?

Petern, if you have the new 5.8 version of BOINC, go to the \"advanced\" view (if you are on the older 5.4 version then all you HAVE is the advanced view). Click the disk tab... how much space is BOINC taking??

Now open windows explorer (not internet explorer) and right click on the disk drive where BOINC is installed and select properties, how much space does the drive have? And how much space is available on it?
If having a DC project with BOINC is of interest to you, with volunteer or cloud computing resources, but have no time for the BOINC learning curve,
use a hosting service that understands BOINC projects: http://DeepSci.com

Yes i have the new 5.8 version

Boinc reports :
Free space 134.82 GB
Used by boink 0 bytes
Other progs 14.14 GB
in the other window - rosetta@home 0 bytes

explorer reports the same results. I did wonder if it was due to a dell partition which has some configuration but that\'s only 55 meg with 40 free and doesn\'t have a drive letter assigned.

initially Boinc does pick up the correct drive though:
- Processor: 2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6600 @ 2.40GHz
- Memory: 2.00 GB physical, 3.85 GB virtual
- Disk: 148.96 GB total, 134.83 GB free

Thanks for any help

The only other thing I can think of is that these preferences may be defined for up to 4 specific \"locations\". When viewing your general preferences are there any preferences shows for any of the specific locations, school, work, home? And at the very top page of the messages in the BOINC messages tab, you will see two messages such as this:

2/3/2007 2:40:09 PM||Host location: none
2/3/2007 2:40:09 PM||General prefs: using your defaults

So your computer might think it is \"home\" and use preferences for \"home\", but the preferences you reported might be for \"default\".

Other then that, the only thing I can think of would be if you modified some of the .XML files that BOINC uses on your machine. I would have to suggest you reinstall BOINC to see if that resets everything.

ahhh, it\'s just downloaded some new tasks!
I uninstalled and re-installed but it did the same thing.
I then uninstalled again and deleted boinc folder (and for completness downloaded the install program again), re-installed and touch wood, it seems ok..... must have had a squiff xml file?

After upgrading to latest BOINC manager and (I assume this is done automatically) the latest Rosetta client, Rosetta server refuses to send me any work. I have 5.66 GB free out of 28.5 GB on my C: drive, of which BOINC is currently using 72.38 MB, including 5.77 MB for SETI and 61.12 MB left over from the last Rosetta project (which was aborted because it was overdue anyway).

My global preferences are to use at most 1 GB, leave at least 0.2 GB free, and use at most 80 percent of total space. SETI is set to use 20% of resources, and Rosetta 80% (these were set after aborting the task, which obviously had not gotten enough CPU time, especially with my computer powered down for four days due to T.S. Fay).

The following number was significantly larger (340 MB) before expanding the resources, but it has not been reduced to zero. Both projects have been UPDATEd, SUSPENDed and then RESUMEd, and Rosetta has even had NO NEW TASKS followed by ALLOW NEW TASKS, since the preferences were updated on both web sites.

Pasted from both (matched character by character):

Any ideas how to get some work from Rosetta?

Which BOINC version are you running now? What version of BOINC were you running before this started occuring?

What platform (Windows, Linux, Mac) are you running?

Windows XP with SP3; BOINC 6.2.16 when problem first appeared, upgraded to 6.2.18 which did not change the result. After moving all files in the Rosetta data file folder to recycle bin (not total delete), to synch with the aborted task, message changed from 263 MB needed to 202 MB needed.

Rosetta\'s work units are tagged indicating they COULD grow to as large as 500MB. In practice, they generally are only about 250K (.25MB), but BOINC is looking at the maximum. And you are running several projects, and so BOINC is also looking at the resource shares. You have allowed up to 1GB for BOINC, but BOINC wants to keep Rosetta within the fraction of that 1GB which corresponds to your resoruce share for Rosetta.

Basically you need to increase your setting for the amount of disk BOINC is allowed to use, to allow Rosetta\'s fair share of that maximum to leave Rosetta with about 750MB. More if you are keeping a cache of work on hand.

The newer BOINC clients are enforcing the disk space limitations a little differently then they used to. I just discussed this with DK, and he\'s modified the settings so that as new tasks are created in the future, they will use a maximum of 300MB rather then the prior 500MB. This will help your situation, but only once the older tasks are processed.

In the short term, increase the amount of disk space you will allow BOINC to use, and set your minimum available space if you wish to assure it doesn\'t conflict with your day to day use of this machine.

Since a couple of days I face the same problem (BOINC 5.10.4, WinXP, SP3).

Hello Gerhard, I don\'t understand the German, but the message indicates that BOINC is limited to .28GB. It says \"Preferences limit disk usage to 0.28GB\", and that\'s not enough. There are three preferences for disk:
use at most GB
leave at least
and use at most %

It sounds like you changed your second one, but that the first one is the problem.

OK, i\'ll try to translate.
For the first option I had before 1 GB disk space maximum in the options, but since my C-disk has only 537 MB left, I restricted the first value in the options to .30 GB - I cannot give all I have (.5 GB) für BOINC.
The second entry is how much at least should be left free on disk: I set it to ,1 GB (100 MB).
The third entry is maximal 50% of disk space
the fourth write to disk not more often than 60 secs
the fifth: Use a maximum of 75% of swap

This new values I used because with the 1GB for the first option (max disk space) I found recently the error messages mentioned before \"There was work but not enough disk space ...\" and reading this thread I thought that I promised BOINC with 1GB too much, because in reality there is only 537 MB.
After I set those new values I repeated the communication and got new messages, that now not only
\"2008-09-09 11:51:10|rosetta@home|Message from server: An additional 57 MB is needed.\"
but
\"2008-09-09 13:01:45|rosetta@home|Message from server: An additional 280 MB is needed.\"
At the moment BOINC uses 22,30 MB (as displayed on tab \"Disk\" of BOINC-Mgr).
My calculation: BOINC uses 22,30 MB for the program, I allow all together 300 MB, so about 270 MB are free for workunits and crunching. The server reports that another 280 MB is required - together 280 + 270 more than 0,5 GB. BOINC was running until now since years without problems in respect to disk space.

In Message 55550 (see there) is written, that \"Rosetta\'s work units are tagged indicating they COULD grow to as large as 500MB. In practice, they generally are only about 250K (.25MB)(!!!!!), but BOINC is looking at the maximum.\" So what now? I have not more disk space, I set the options according to the available disk space - and BOINC is still not satisfied. Why BOINC tries to download workunits that will consume such a big amount of diskspace if in settings it is clearly said there is only 300 MB disk place left reserved for BOINC? If BOINC doesn\'t care for the settings, what is then the use of those settings? And finally: What to do that crunching is going on?

Does the community consider this problem as settled?
One of my workstations now for more than a week didn\'t crunch a single workunit.
Today same as last days only messages, claiming more diskspace in different amount, are displayed:

Message 55769 - Posted: 15 Sep 2008, 12:50:28 UTC - in response to Message 55550.

Basically you need to increase your setting for the amount of disk BOINC is allowed to use, to allow Rosetta\'s fair share of that maximum to leave Rosetta with about 750MB. More if you are keeping a cache of work on hand.

Gerhard, you do not have enough disk space to allow Rosetta to have 750MB.

Why should I allow 750MB for \"fair share\" (what is this?) if I have only 500 MB left?! I set the options to 0.2 GB for BOINC! If this is not enough BOING mgr should not allow such settings and indicate a minimum.

More if you are keeping a cache of work on hand

What is this? \"a cache of work on hand\"??

In practice, they generally are only about 250K (.25MB)

Why then the settings in options? If I set 0,2 GB disk space BOINC should manage to operate with this! Otherwise those settings have no meaning, if set to 0.2 GB, but BOINC (or you) ask for 750 MB.

Please answer the question if those required 750MB are a worst case scenario of a gigantomanic, invasive piece of software, needing just 0,25 MB to do the job but reserving a 3000fold (that is, 300000% - in words: threehunderthousand percent) in andvance, because maybe perhaps there could be the situation that such an amount will be needed?
