while starting up boinc today

Fri 11 Dec 2015 09:49:12 PM SGT | | Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Fri 11 Dec 2015 09:49:12 PM SGT | rosetta@home | Scheduler request failed: Failure when receiving data from the peer
Fri 11 Dec 2015 09:49:14 PM SGT | | Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

thereafter a set of jobs is found orphaned in the task list as seen on the tasks / results page.
a trouble is that there is apparently no way to cancel the abandoned tasks from the tasks/results page and those are left with an expiry date 2 weeks away.

would it be easy/possible to allow task cancellation from the user's tasklist? that could help to release the 'orphaned' tasks so that it could be processed by someone else.

Possible is to use the resend lost tasks feature of BOINC, however not sure if it is available in the ancient version of BOINC used by Rosetta.

agree that it is possibly good time to update both boinc server and client codes. recently i've built a copy of boinc client from source
https://github.com/BOINC/boinc, checked the commit log and i noted among the fixes are fixes to prevent buffer overflow exploits not too sure if those buffer overflow fixes applies to the client or server or both as well.

for those who allow boinc client-rpc from the open internet e.g. using mobile apps like androboinc https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=sk.boinc.androboinc, it may help to protect to an extent your boinc-client server from 'buffer overflow exploits' on the boinc rpc ports (pretty important if u're concerned some 1 take control of your pc/server from an open internet hacking through the boinc-rpc ports)

i'd guess this is just as or even more important if those buffer overflow fixes applies to server codes. of course, there could be lots more useful features that has been added since an earlier release to address issues like the network challenges, bug fixes & more functionalities that enables better boinc distributed computing etc.

Right, the feature is not available in the server code used by R@h.
