Thanks (again) David for updating the website.

There seems a small typing error in the BB code page. To use
Quoted
you should not use (quote)Quoted(/quoted) but: (quote)Quoted(/quote). I used ( instead of [.

By the way, when I was using a blue link, or just typing the url of the BB code, my post was recognized as spam.

Happy crunching,
Path7.

The "Notify about new private messages by email" in Forum Preferences seems to be set "ON" by default.

There has been much discussion with David Anderson (Dr. BOINC) this week about this, on the Google group "Teams and Email" thread, the boinc_dev mail list (11/20 post) and BOINC Trac.

He has stated unequivocally that this must NOT be set ON by default.

Please un-set this for everyone, and those that want email notifications can reset it to "ON".

Thanks for the heads up. I turned this pref off for everyone and made 'off' the default.

I'm trying to post a link to an errored work unit in the 5.85 thread but all I get is:

"Your post has been marked as spam by akismet.net anti-spam system. If you feel that this is wrong, please try editing your message."

I posted to R@H->science->Minimum energy function

I dared to url tag TINKER "spam ... edit your post" type stuff, I could not get back to my post (to edit it), I have no idea if my post is just hidden or it was rejected.

I have also mentioned this on the mod's contact point, not that I will link to it :).

So some questions:

How do you link without getting thrown in the spam basket?
Are the posts that are assumed spam retrievable?

I use Firefox version 2.0.0.9 + NoScript 1.1.8 + Tab mix plus 0.3.6 is this causing me trouble?

How do you link without getting thrown in the spam basket?

First, compose your message somewhere else and do a "copy". Then post a brief token message to the message board. Then edit your post and replace the token message with a "paste" of your real message. The spam filter only checks new posts, and doesn't check when you do an edit.

Thanks to the poster "transient" who found this workaround.

Are the posts that are assumed spam retrievable?

I don't think so, unless you saved a copy. I like to "copy" my post to the copy/paste buffer just in case it gets swallowed.

thats a whole lot of time just to post a link
so you can't even post links back to your own work units.

I didn't last long, but I won't resort to spam so...

buy my doughnuts

These are really my doughnuts, the picture is taken by me and I declare that it is GPL , or any other copyright copy left or copy anything you want.

I made these from flour, yeast, sugar and can give you the recipe, they were baked in 180C peanut oil and rolled in cinnamon and sugar.

Please remember to buy my doughnuts
buy my doughnuts
buy my doughnuts

PS they are not available in stores or from me personally, and in fact they are already eaten.

The developers are looking into different options.

1. is to teach Akismet what is SPAM and what isn't. At this moment it doesn't know, so posting URLs, even pointing to a thread elsewhere on the same forum, is considered spam.

2. is to use reCAPTCHA for signing up through the website.

3. this code is available, see change log 13835, do not allow a profile to be made unless you have at least credit.

http://akismet.com/faq/

Where does the spam go?

When the plugin catches something as spam it saves it in the database for 15 days in case you want to check it out manually and then automattically deletes it. In the unlikely event something gets incorrectly identified as spam you can correct it and it submits the "false positive" back to Akismet for analysis and improvement of our system. If a spam comment happens to get through and you mark it as spam within WordPress, it does the same thing. Akismet becomes more effective the more you use it.

If I'm reading that right, then someone would need to have access to the DB so they could set it straight on what is spam and what is not. I'll put my hand up for about 1 hour a day for a month or two.

Though why on earth BOINC didn't start with a blank blacklist is beyond me.

Have you checked BOTH the local settings AND the account settings (on the website)?

Carson, Rosetta has plenty of work, so I suspect the information in this thread will reveal the cause. Most likely you have several projects set up, and BOINC had decided it is time to work on the others to keep up with deadlines.

guess this doesn't belong right here but, as you will see, I got no chance to post it where it belongs..

In the last couple of days RALPH is totally unreachable: can't report WU that were already uploaded, cant upload newly finished WUs, cant' fetch scheduler list, can't access website itself...

Any idea about what's going on and how long this will last?

I got the exact same error messages.
I am unable to send completed WUs from all my hosts.

Unless this problem is fixed soon, I'll temporarily switching my hosts over to other projects.

If anyone know when this shared memory problem is fixed, please announce it ASAA.

Thanks.

See this thread.

How come RALPH users are having the same problems as us Rosetta crunchers? Are the two projects on the same servers, by any chance? And are the servers down,by any chance?

Ralph was offline for a half day before any Rosetta problems came up. Ralph is completely down, Rosetta is functional except for the scheduler. They aren't the same problem.

It seems to have lost track of exactly which threads I've already viewed and which I have not. Apparently random threads that haven't changed in a year and showing as unread.

in the cafe, the moderators contact thread, the status indicates a change to that thread 1 hour ago. however the date of the last post was something like november 25. was there an edit there? I don't see anything missing since I last looked at that thread. virtual beer was the last thing mentioned in there prior to the crash.

That was me moving things around this morning. The contact tread is intended to be work that is in progress. I took items that have been addressed, and remained there for a few weeks, and moved them to the archive mentioned in the first post of the thread. And somehow moving a post to a thread marks it as recently changed, but the date on the post that was moved to it may have been from months ago.

...anyway, that one isn't any problem with the new server website code.

Looking at the info you've given, you haven't violated a rule. I don't know which imaginary important message disappeared ;) , but I imagine it was an old one. I wouldn't be surprised if you told me the entire thread disappeared.

they store old threads in an archive, otherwise if your the first time in a message board, it would take ages to load, especially with an crappy inet connection. so they put posts in a archive so it keeps remained but dousn't gives a tremendous load on the servers and the pc's of the users.

so you didn't violate a rule.

Quick little tip for bypassing the spam filter. If you're posting a link to a specific task, work unit, or computer, to can add a ampersand ( & ) to the end of the URL and not have to edit the post. Examples:

Computer: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/show_host_detail.php?hostid=186636&
Computer results: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/results.php?hostid=186636&
Job result: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/result.php?resultid=125044738&

Hello BitSpit,

Great workaround. It really works!
Homepage: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/& has to be changed in: http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/#.

Thanks,
Path7.

I'm posting the three links without editing or other workarounds. If you see this post then the problem is fixed and no workaround is needed anymore.

Ya think? So is that why there are threads going back 811 days to the beginning of the project???

No - it's just mods screwing with things again.

they store old threads in an archive, otherwise if your the first time in a message board, it would take ages to load, especially with an crappy inet connection. so they put posts in a archive so it keeps remained but dousn't gives a tremendous load on the servers and the pc's of the users.

maybe we should make the forum, non resisable, so if someone posts a long link or something it brakes it up. cause now in the problems with 5.90/5.91 the thread are really big, now i have a quiet high resolution, 1280*1024, but if someone with 800*600 or 1024*768, tries to view this he has to drag forever to read.

Hey, no problem here, the databases are in a bit of ping pong mode. I sure do wish we had some newsflash regarding this sort of thing here, or for that matter a technical news update -- the technical news page hasn't been updated since November.

Right -- would be nice to get some sort of feedback from the admins here. I'd guess they know there is something amiss, but can't be sure as there has been a rather long bout of silence regarding technical matters.

Well it's dog slow here in "Blighty" (UK to anyone not familiar with the term !)

Indeed, whatever problem that was going on (recognizing that all we have is speculation here) has, at least for the moment, been resolved (or alternatively, temporarily fixed itself).

There was/is a DOS attack on our server. We have a temporary fix but will have to wait until we can get in touch with Keith, our main sys admin, for a better solution. Sorry for the late response. Thanks to the mods for directly alerting this to us.

Hello David,

David EK & Mods thanks for the good work!
Sometimes it takes a few minutes, but I'm still able to contact to and from R@H servers.

Good luck defending R@H!

Hi all,

This day from 5.15 am till 8.30 am UTC my BOINC had problems connecting to R@H servers.

From: http://boincprojectstatus.ath.cx/

I'm wondering was this some kind of server problem, or (probably worse) another DOS attack on the server?

Have a nice day,

Anyone else preferably in the UK getting a really intermittent connection to this site ? Sometimes it'll connect almost at once and others , there's no chance and the connection times out ?

For the past week or so, the Rosetta folks have been having problems -- what has been mentioned is that they are dealing with a DOS attack and until one of their 'high tech' admins is back on site, it is likely to be a repetitive problem. No mention of this on the home page though.

Our boinc web server was reaching it's limit so we fired up another server to help with the downloads and we will eventually balance out the uploads also. On a positive note, it's not a bad problem to have. Our throughput has been climbing recently.

Ah -- OK -- but are you still coping with the DOS attack issues which have made access generally rather tedious this past week or so?

No, the web servers are getting legitimate requests now. Locking out the IPs and removing the spam profile did the trick.

Yay, able to reach the site again.

I'd like to BOINC the heads of the people behind the DoS attacks together and crunch them into a fine dust - hopefully getting credit(s) for doing so.

there is stuff showing as "new" unread that dates back to last year in some cases.

Well that was interesting -- Rosetta was flat offline for about 6 hours -- back up now -- but no indication that anyone else noticed.

The back-end fileserver had crashed - kernel panic. I've just returned from a quick run to campus to reboot that server...

Looks like another three to four hours downtime. Hope that's not a repeat of the fileserver panic. I've been there enough times to know that flaky hardware is never a good thing.

We seem to have a lot of "bug thread" stickies for versions of Rosetta that haven't been used in a long time and which will never be used again.

I think that un-sticking these old threads would reduce the clutter.

When I click on Results in the main Rosetta@home web page, I get the Active Work Units web page instead of a page showing only my results.

Right, and the columns that say "user" rather then "all users" are how your numbers look. Then if you click on one of the WUs, it will show your reported results as compared to the rest.

If you want to see your tasks page, then click the link for "[Participants]" on top of this message board. Then click the "view" link that follows "tasks".

Could it be anything to do with them sending out jobs that need more memory than you have available?
I think mention was made somewhere about a lot of jobs with high memory requirement being sent out.

recently the text formatting of the forums does not work properly. The text is going from side to side on full screen. You have to center the text in your screen and set the user details off the screen in order to read the post.

previously the text autoformated so that it fit to the window without resizing and without having to center the text via the scroll bar.

recently the text formatting of the forums does not work properly. The text is going from side to side on full screen. You have to center the text in your screen and set the user details off the screen in order to read the post.

previously the text autoformated so that it fit to the window without resizing and without having to center the text via the scroll bar.

The text formatter will break up strings of words at logical places. Usually that's at the spaces between words, although I've see it also break at hyphens. However, when someone enters a very long string of characters, like one of those super long workunit names that has no spaces or hyphens in it, it will cause the text to extend beyond the usual right margin and resets the right margin out further to accommodate this long string. Since there can only be one right margin on the page, everything now goes out to the new right margin.

Say, the "Technical News" section (http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/rah_technical_news.php) is quite interesting, will it start being updated again someday?

I'm not sure my problem relates to your upgrade, however, in the last 24 hours all my completed task stay in 'Uploading' status. Just wondering if anyone else is having the same problem.

DEK says this in another thread: The upload server is trying to catch up. The data should eventually get uploaded.

Yes, although I have only one task that's completed since they started switching to the new fileserver. I assume that although they've transferred enough files to the new fileserver to be able to send out at least some new workunits, they haven't transferred some of the files needed to be able to be able to let everyone upload their results. The Technical News says it will take a few more days to finish transferring all the files from the old fileserver to the new one, so do you have enough free disk space available to store your results for that long, and have you made sure BOINC is allowed to use that much of it?

I got loads of disk space, so it doesn't matter, other than a cluttered boinc manager task screen and a ton of comm messages.

Same here.

I assume that the transfer of files will complete some time in the next day or two. The earliest deadline I have on a task awaiting upload is 12/6, or about five days hence as I type this.

Personally, I'll keep crunching for Rosetta no matter what. However, I suspect there will be a huge uproar from other users who are more interested in statistics than I am if the delay becomes so great that tasks go past their deadline.

according to the tech news thread and the front page, they had a server outage on sunday and decided enough was enough and started transferring everything to their new SAN system. they got the newer and critical files transferred but there are still older files that have not yet been transferred.

November 30, 2008
Unplannded Outage: the project was down today while the service was migrated to our new SAN. Sorry for the inconvenience. For more details, see technical news. -KEL

and from the technical news section:

Nov 30, 2008
Today the fileserver crashed yet once again. I'd had enough of this and decided to take the opportunity to move things over to the new SAN we've been prepping. Moving all the necessay files from the old server to the new took ~6 hours. We've still got to migrate the older persistent data - something like 3 days of solid data transfer - but we can run without that immediately available. This should be much more stable and reduce the number of sudden outages. -KEL

Nov 30, 2007
DK, our primary site developer, is recovering from surgery and is out of contact. When the troubles arose DK's status wasn't known to the IT group, resulting in confusion. Rhiju stepped in and provided the fix. We apologize for the outage...

Nov 29, 2007
The feeder is failing over and over again thus no new work is being sent out. The feeder application needs to be rebuilt to handle the large number of applications that R@H has had. We know of the problems and will get this done as soon as possible.

i hope your webpage servers are not tied into the same system as the taks computer system. there have been some severe slowdowns if not outright inaccessibility today for just this webpage.

i was hoping you guys separated the two systems so if the work system crashes we can still look here for info.

Actually the scheduler was running on boinc.bakerlab.org but is now running on another server to reduce the load on the main web server.

Can you try clicking the update button for the project on the boinc client so that it gets the new scheduler url. We are running the scheduler on a different web server so your client has get the new url.

Let me know if the problem persists.

Mod.Sense suggested a quick fix for this by using the Redirect directive on our webserver. The main question now is does the client handle redirects so please let me know if this fixes the issue or not.

Thanks Mod.Sense!

The update button did not help, but, programming in a non existent proxy connection and hitting the 'retry communications / do communications' button caused the client to think it was disconnected. After repairing the proxy config to it's prior setting and allowing the deferal clock to timeout (60 seconds in this case), the first thing the client did was to download the scheduler list. This did repair the problem for this client...

Now the only problem is that the acknowledged work-units all have 'pending' credits... I have not seen that in a while here.....

For those that are still having issues with your boinc client not getting the new scheduler url from our master url and if you would rather not detach and reattach the project which should fix the issue if updating doesn't. You can do the following:

1. stop the boinc client.
2. manually edit the client_state.xml, client_state_prev.xml, and master_boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta.xml files in the BOINC client data directory by changing all occurrences of "http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta_cgi/cgi" to "http://srv4.bakerlab.org/rosetta_cgi/cgi". This should be between <scheduler> and </scheduler> tags. You might not need to update master_boinc.bakerlab.org_rosetta.xml but you might as well.

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas for an easier fix, I'm all ears. The redirection does not appear to work so I removed it.

Does these suggestions lose all existing work? If so I really don't appreciate losing 4+ cpu hours per WU! Note this would be worst when you change the default to 6 hours.

it is only redirecting your communications/scheduler to the new correct server.
should have no impact on your tasks in process.
only do this if you are still having communications trouble.

The only suggestion I've seen that would cause you to lose any work is if you reset the project. It will lose the work, and start from scratch. Getting the new scheduler URL, and also downloading all of the base files Rosetta uses, for each application version you receive tasks for.

The client will retry, and wait and retry, and eventually double check the master file. At that point it will begin to use the new scheduler URL all by itself. No manual changes required.

Have your DNS guy create a CNAME alias for schedular.bakaerlab.org and point that to the A record of whatever machine will be doing the scheduling.

i.e.

$origin bakerlab.org.
schedular CNAME srv4.bakerlab.org.

(don't forget the trailing period)

Then publish the permanent URL for the schedular as http://schedular.bakerlab.org/rosetta_cgi/cgi

Then if you ever need to change the machine that runs the schedular, it's only a global DNS change and does not impact any client... If you set the refresh and timeouts short on the zone these changes can be made to propagate really quickly too... sometimes in a couple of minutes..

Hi;
I get the same thing... Whenever my computer tries to upload any completed tasks, it receives the message: Message from server: Server error: can't attach shared memory.

I wonder if I did something? But I don't think so, as I have not changed anything in my prefs for either boinc manager or the web site.

Hitting 'update' about 10 times worked for me. PITA on 20 boxes, though.
I guess I could have done it thru boingmanager. Thanks moderators and others

We recently updated the web site with the latest BOINC code. Please post any issues with the web site in this thread. This update includes new features in the forum, spam filters, and a fix for merging hosts.

Any word on when the server memory problem will be fixed? I have two machines waiting.

Thanks

Lee, your client will update itself in fairly short order. But you have to get it to attempt contact to the project by allowing more work. Then just leave it alone for a day and see what it does all by itself.

Suggested modification to the web site to avoid losing more participants:

Under Rosetta@home preferences, add the following feature, similar to what I've seen on other BOINC projects:

A number of selections for which workunits are allowed on this computer. For example:

1) test for workunits using a program that's passed RALPH but still needs some performance testing before being released to everyone. For now, I'd put workunits using the new features of minirosetta added in 1.39 and 1.40 in this class.

2) minirosetta for the other workunits using any version of minirosetta.

3) rosetta_beta for workunits using that program.

I'd set it up so all of them are enabled for users who haven't set any of them yet, except disable test for users who create accounts after this feature is added unless they then enable it. This should avoid any problems using computers where these settings haven't been made yet.

message board server is running really slow from about 00.10-00.15 UTC
it is taking 1.5-2 mins to load any one section of the page.
this slowness comes and goes at random
time now 00.16 UTC and it seems to run fine

I recently upgraded my version of BOINC from 5.10.45 to 6.2.28. Before that, I had selected 14 CPU hours as the preferred workunit length. Both of the Rosetta@home workunits I've downloaded since the BOINC upgrade came with an expected length of 29 hours. Are you out of 14 hour workunits? Or does Rosetta@home have problems with the combination of BOINC 6.2.28 and a selection of 14 hours as the preferred length?

Mod.Sense suggested a quick fix for this by using the Redirect directive on our webserver. The main question now is does the client handle redirects so please let me know if this fixes the issue or not.

Thanks Mod.Sense!

Note that I've seen messages of other BOINC projects indicating that if you make certain updates to the selection of servers, just one update is not enough to make clients download the file specifying which servers to use; instead, it takes about 10 updates in a row that try to download at least one workunit, but don't succeed in downloading any at all.

I just realized my CPU usage was essentially nil, and when I checked BOINC, the message log shows it's been requesting tasks from Rosetta all day (since 8:15 AM local) and never gotten any tasks to work on.

I'm running BOINC Manager 6.2.19 on Windows XP SP2, with 4 GB of RAM and a 3.2 GHz Pentium 4 CPU. I've never seen this problem before. Every request for tasks gets this:

01/03/2009 10:23:32 PM|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 60480 seconds of work, reporting 0 completed tasks
01/03/2009 10:23:37 PM|rosetta@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

Is there something wrong with requesting 60480 seconds of work? Do I need to upgrade BOINC Manager again? Have you no tasks available? Help?

There is no work available for the time being due to a system problem. Perhaps by Monday morning sometime Pacific time the team will correct this problem. Hang in there. See the server problems and not getting any work threads to follow whats going on. Also you can tell by the home page stats if there is any work or not, also look at the server status page via the link on the lower left hand side of the home page.

The systems status shows that one of the two work generator programs is down, and the other one can't keep up with the demand for more workunits; there were only 22 workunits available the last I looked, not necessarily including any suitable for your machine.

For cases like this, you might want to add another project rather reliable at supplying workunits, but give it only a small fraction of your available CPU time:

http://boinc.fzk.de/poem/

This one, at least, offers rather short workunits compared to many BOINC projects. Also, it is working on protein folding, as Rosetta@home is. Doesn't claim to be helping any specific diseases, though.

Giving it only a small share of your available CPU time means that even if you keep it enabled, it normally won't use much of your machine, but it will still fill in any times when you can't get workunits from Rosetta@home.

Thanks I was looking for another Project with short turn around times AND was doing something for Science. I always thought Poem had to to do with poetry, silly me!!! I couldn't right poetry if my life depended on it, so always ignored the site. Thank again!!!

You're welcome.

The SIMAP site also has short workunits, but is only active perhaps one week every month. Active today, though.

http://boinc.bio.wzw.tum.de/boincsimap/

The malariacontrol.net site also has short workunits, but is going less active and often doesn't have any workunits available.

http://www.malariacontrol.net/

Neither is as closely related to what Rosetta@home is doing, though.

You might also want to watch Cels@home. Currently inactive for some changes including moving to another server, and with fewer workunits than requested even when it was active. Typical workunits were about 6 CPU hours on my machine.

http://cels-at-home-dev.dyndns.org/cels/

This website is related to Cels@home, but it's not very clear if that's where they plan to move:

http://ficp.engr.utexas.edu/cels/

Predictor@home has been essentially inactive for several months; I don't know how long the workunits are.

World Community Grid tends to provide long workunits, but is about to go inactive in order to move to another servers site.

Surely you mean you couldn't write poetry if your life depended on it. That sounds right.

Ok, sorry. I'm waiting for work and have nothing better to say. You may beat me with a stick...

I have not been able to tell if they are issuing again, but WCG is on the air and taking work back and the web site is up again ...

I am not sure if they are issuing work again or not ... I can't tell from my buffers ... and I just lowered their priority so I am probably not asking for work yet ...

But most of their projects are Bio related ...

They are issuing workunits again, although perhaps not as many. They're still checking for any unexpected effects of their new environment, such as running their server software on new servers.

My comp cant report work. This is the last error indication i could find in my log's. I have about 5 workunits that my comp tried to report but couldn't. They just dissapare from my comp and must be floating out there somewhere in the big cloud.
Is it my instalation or is this an general issue????

If the tasks were removed from the list in your BOINC Manager, then another scheduler request went through successfully. BOINC will automatically retry until it goes through.

The thing is that they dissapare from my lokal boinc client but they are still marked as in progress and new at the website. This is an example

The only way I know of for tasks to show on the website, but not appear on your local BOINC Manager display is when your machine never received the work in the first place. The server thinks that it assigned it to you, but your machine never saw it. Some people called these "ghost WUs".

Many of the task names are very similar. The simplest way to tell them apart is by the numbers at the very end of the name. Are you certain these are the tasks that you completed?

Then in another log i found these notes that indicates problems at reboot or uncontrolled shutdowns of the client. Had that fealing before today that the error happened around or after reboots. Had to reboot the comp some times after patches and upgades after a 3 weeks vacation.

cant find C:\Program\BOINC\\RebootPending.txt

Lets hope that the doubble \\ just is a error in the logstring ;-)

So no i can't be sure yet that my client had got all those jobs has to dig a bit deeper into the logfile's before i can say that but i haven't the time for that right now.

Can there be some problems in the code that handle restart of the workunits. Probably an commom pease of code shared by all your projects.

Mike posted yesterday some of the issues they have been working on for the next release.

I don't know the details of exactly what he means, but as I read his comment about "Bug fix in checkpointing machinery, states were not being correctly restored", I would say it sounds possible that this is exactly what you are talking about. If so, then yes, some problems were uncovered, and fixes are being tested and should be available in the next release.

Ah ok the one that talking about instability in handling textfiles might fit on my earlier problem, because my machine get an error no 2 from XP. Can't find file that is and it's textfiles that don't seems to be handeled ok when a restart is done. And it seems to affects any WU:s so it's probably fixed now.

And the error i had today is probably a harder one to isolate because it might not be easily reprodusable. Your server or my connection has to be in a special state so the boinc client thinks it's ok until it's to late (files already deleted from my client). It's not easy to get a two face commit to work properly or what it's called today.

Some wasted cputime but you can't get them all.

Your server or my connection has to be in a special state so the boinc client thinks it's ok until it's to late (files already deleted from my client). It's not easy to get a two face commit to work properly or what it's called today.

Some wasted cputime but you can't get them all.

It is called Two Phase COmmit and actually it is not hard to make work at all ... it is just that the BOINC Developers probably did not think that it was really important to ensure that a proper two phase commit is needed.

By their lights, it isn't ... the actual science is, and has been loaded, so, the data that they care about has been moved to the server. The trivia of proper accounting of credit and things like that are not that important to them ...

As to the last statement ... well ... in relational databases, the two phase commit protocol is core to all activities ... including MySQL and SQL Server which are used by projects for BOINC ...

Um, I did not criticize your spelling or language ... or, I don't think I did ... if you got that impression I am sorry that I gave you that impression.

I was just trying to, with my teacher's hat on, explain the proper term and give the reference for those that might not understand what you were saying.

Anyway, I did not mean to cause offense ...

It's not actually a problem with the site, but I just wanted to point out that the date of the news is wrong... it keeps saying "2008" :asd:

It's ok Paul no hard fealings at all. Just tried to make a joke there but this isn't my native language so it's not always easy to get it right.
And i agree that it's easy to use the built in 2 phase comm. in the databases but it's a bit harder to get that done in a stateless app that i think boinc is especially if you have to build that support yourself. Havent built any apps that use http witch i suppose this app is using so i might be wrong.
But this discuss is probably a bit out of thopic here so i think i'll keep a low profile here after this

I can't connect to the website.

The server status seems to be O.K., however none of my 2 computers - in different locations, with different IPs - can connect to the server and get a new work unit.
According to the Rosetta server my 2nd laptop managed to upload data and report the success, however it can't get any new WUs.

On the first laptop I get as following:

2009-01-17 17:13:37|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
2009-01-17 17:13:59||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
2009-01-17 17:14:01||Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
2009-01-17 17:14:02|rosetta@home|Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

I have no problem with the Internet access - I can even write this bug report down. :D

The same issue was reported by my teammate a couple hours ago.

Does anyone have the same problem?

EDIT: an interesting issue - my BOINC Client repeated its attempt, however the second time it requested... 0 seconds of work! See:

2009-01-17 17:13:37|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
2009-01-17 17:13:59||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
2009-01-17 17:14:01||Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.
2009-01-17 17:14:02|rosetta@home|Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

Finally, after a couple of attempts, my client managed to report a completed WU, however it still requested 0 seconds of work so I got no new WUs.
2009-01-17 17:19:12|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
2009-01-17 17:20:48|rosetta@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

In this way, I still get no new WUs.
I don't know where the problem is, but looking at my 2nd laptop I guess it won't get any new Rosetta WU unless the BOINC is at least restarted.
The strange thing is that the 2nd laptop still communicates with the server (the "last seen" date in my computers window is getting updated) but it doesn't take new WUs although it should.

Hello Aegis Maelstrom,

However the Server Status Page is looking OK.,
from (a quick link) to BOINC Online Schedulers I'm getting unreachable.

Something odd going on.

Edit:
Some minutes later I'm getting online from (the quick link) to BOINC Online Schedulers.
And than again unreachable.
Perhaps the servers are on a heavy load?

Have a nice day,

Aegis, you don't need to do anything. BOINC will request work when it is ready for more. Your machine thinks it already has enough work on-board for other projects, and is trying to assure you meet the deadlines for that other work.

You can review this thread for more info. on how BOINC client decides to request work.

I was able to report all completed wu's. I tried to reset the project, didn't work.

No, resetting the project would not resolve a problem that says the server is temporarily unavailable.

And if the servers are under heavy load, it will in fact worsen the problem, because you will have to download all of the files that make Rosetta work again.

who updates the RSS home page feeds?
it would be nice that when servers go down (comm problems or whatever) that someone would put a note out on the homepage saying that comm is down or whatever the problem is. it is annoying to have to guess what is happening or wonder if anyone is aware of the problem.

now thats a shame and a black spot on the project.
you know as well as i do, that allot of us have been requesting more updated information/news to be posted by someone about outages, problems and if a solution is going to be worked on.

it was a damn shame that it took so long for any news from the last outage to be posted and then no word on what happened on the other one. it seems like you are the only one from the "team" or project that tries to tell us whats going on. to bad you couldn't get some sort of way to access the statuses or alert someone that there is a problem and then tell us what is going on if they won't.

so 'well done' to you for at least wanting to get us some info. even though that is probably a bit outside your normal role as moderator.

now back to the Obama whistle stop tour video streams....

Thanks, I try to post what I can. But at this point, I can't presume the extent of the problem you have reported so far. So, can't really offer any advice other then to wait for BOINC's normal retries, and to be assured that handling of such problems is designed in to BOINC. It will recover on it's own with no intervention on your part.

BTW, it's not really a black spot on the project. It is just how BOINC is set up, the RSS feeds are administered by the same control panel that contols all of the other project aspects. And moderators do not need that level of access.

ok, but what i am trying to point out is that in the aprox. 12 hrs that this problem has been going on, no one has reported anything on the homepage.
this is kind of disappointing.

on the other hand it seems that it has resolved itself somewhat. i was able to upload 2 tasks but there was a bit of a bubble in reporting them which resolved itself on the next comm. cycle.

I'm having a similar problem. It has been about 18 hours since I have not been able to get any new WU's. I was getting temporarily down messages from the server, but those stopped. My computer is requesting 4 days worth of work and I'm running only 3 of 4 WU's because the servers aren't giving me any more work. I updated preferences to have more work in my queue and despite boinc seeing that update and requesting more work, I'm still getting none.

it is now 12 hours since the start of this problem and it looks like it is sporadic in nature. at around 10.50pm (utc +1) boinc tried to call home and got a troubled signal. then it retried 6 minutes later and got through but was not able to get any work despite requesting 56,000+ seconds of work.

and again no communications from the team.

The system is aparently still catching up for the period of time it was not serving work for some reason. Just watching the server status page, there are 113,000 more tasks outstanding then there were a half hour ago. The scheduler and feeder must be having trouble keeping up right now. Your machine will continue to retry and will get some work.

Are the workunit generator programs running slower than usual? I just noticed the system status shows both running, but only 63 workunits ready to send.

Hi Mod, sorry for the previous claim regarding one of two computers - I had a bad day obviously and haven't seen the 0 seconds of work requested. Despite of that, the claim regarding my 2nd computer was valid.

For many hours there were no problems, however presently once again we seem to be dry of WUs:

2009-01-18 15:42:16|rosetta@home|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 2495 seconds of work, reporting 1 completed tasks
2009-01-18 15:42:21|rosetta@home|Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks

Best Regards for all.

Today, I noticed a problem I hadn't seen before. On your Server Status web page, the programs in Disabled status are shown with the same green block as for the normal status, making any status changes hard to spot. Could you change this to using blocks of a different color, for example red, for the Disabled status?

Of course, ending the Disabled status faster would be welcome too.

Right --- a bit misleading that. As is the home page announcement which implies that things are up and running -- clearly there is a bit more 'work to do' before that is the case.

A slight clarification -- you can upload files, but you can't *report* them. Those green status lights indicating disabled (they really should be red or orange like other BOINC projects when disabled or not running) mean that you can't report completed work.

The message on the home page which is a bit misleading is this:

February 16, 2009
A fileserver/SAN hiccup caused the entire project to pause for a number of hours. Sorry for the outage. -KEL

**********

Not a big deal, but if it had said something like this:

A fileserver/SAN hiccup caused the entire project to pause for a number of hours. We are working toward correcting the problem. A number of the critical functions are still offline but we hope to have them corrected as soon as possible. Sorry for the ongoing outage. -KEL
********************************************

Then folks would have a more accurate idea of what is going on. Again, not that big a deal, I've got plenty of other projects that are reasonably happy at the moment.

"project maintenance" is what the message says.

Update -- looks like the servers are now back online, but struggling with a lot of 'catch up' traffic so things will likely be slow going for a while.

I was able as of that last post to upload and report. But no new work is being sent due to what the manager says is a lack of headers and data.

Just when I put my 8 CPU system onto the project ... :)

Not sure why this message:

{error}Proposed work request 596265.165152 bigger than max 174534.981120

With 8 cores and 3 hours per task I am sure I can plow through quite a bit in 24 hours and a cache of 0.5 days is also not unreasonable.

Anyway ... another item to consider ...

Fortunately, I'm now able to upload and report. Unfortunately, I can't get any new WUs. My messages just say there's no work from project; there's no mention of headers or anything like that. But the RAH home page and server page say that everything is running fine and there are some 10k WUs ready to send. I even changed my prefs to have the WUs last 4 hours instead of my usual 6, and that didn't get me anything. I can't believe all 10,000 WUs are for running times other than 4 or 6 hours. Am I doing anything wrong now?

No ...

One of the "problems" with the systems we use is that the information is accurate as far as it goes, but does not always convey the entire story. I was in the same boat as you but now seem to have gotten work ... as the front page says ... major hiccup ...

{edit}

Oops, now we are queue =0 ... out of work to send ... my bad ...

The issue will be now that there is likely no one there to kick the work generator to make more work to feed the hungry beasts ...

My issue is now fixed. I even got WUs before they ran dry! :p

The work generator is running ... but it is having a hard time getting ahead of the curve. Probably all my fault ... :)

Actually, it is pretty common after an outage that the work generator has a hard time because the participants need to re-fill their work queues.

I've seen some errors with 1.58, but it seems to require an unusual (at least for RALPH@home participants) combination of events to cause them:

1. CPU usage set less than 100%.
2. At least some graphics use for displaying that workunit's progress.
3. Possibly, also shutting off the graphics display for that workunit.

However, once started, the problem tends to last for more than one workunit.

Also there's a second error type that seems to depend on details of the workunit, but RALPH@home was intended partly to find such errors before that type of workunit reaches Rosetta@home.

I think it is broken even though the server stats page says it is ok. I have several tasks waiting as pending too.

..where did you hide the BOINC.Italy team RAC ? :-))

at the moment team RAC is about 8000 but members RAC sum is 6-7 times higher.

Is there someone else with the same "little misunderstanding" ?

The project has been having some file server problems the past few days, so credit was late being issued, and stats exports are probably delayed. Things are on the mend now, and should be reflected on the stats sites tomorrow.

the work generator was having fits from what i saw in another thread.
it's fixed now and you should get work.
also...6.6.x has scheduling and long term debt scheduling issues.
I saw that if you have GPU on your system and are doing GPU work, then you should go down to one of the better 6.5.x programs. If you are not doing any GPU work you can do down to the last "best upgrade" of 6.4.7.

While that may be part of the problem, I went back to an earlier version of BOINC as you suggested on two Vista computers and I am still not downloading any Rosetta work on them. Seti continues to download. My Windows 7 computer is downloading Rosetta and Seti equally as it should and is working just fine.

Just server troubles yet again...computers you know are temperamental. So this one upload server is being a pain in the backside. Just let the program sort it out when the server does come online again, your queue of upload and reporting tasks will clear.

there seems to be problems with servers that distribute and collect WUs
I've been having problems receiving and returning WUS for about 2 weeks now.
However, from time to time, i was able to receive and to return some WUs so my guess the problem is a HUGE LOAD on the servers.

Can somebody from Rosetta staff explain what is going on, namely
1) have they identified the problem and what it is
2) what are the ways developed to fix it and when they expect the fix to be implemented
3) after the fix is done can you please report it so everyone know they can return to rosetta (me, i have switched to other projects temporarily to ease your load troubles)

One way to control the problem was set up a long time ago - adjust your workunit settings so that you get workunits with a longer expected run time. Then, those that don't error out or reach the 99 decoys limit will run longer and you'll need fewer of them.

Gives less load on the server, too.

Yep. Some simple errors by the project team combined with a few unforeseen bugs in a recent mini-rosetta version caused normal service to break down for a couple of days. Due to high server load it has taken about a week to get back to normal levels.

Can somebody from Rosetta staff explain what is going on, namely
1) have they identified the problem and what it is

I am not a member of the Rosetta staff, but here is what one of them said:

"A developer/scientist in the lab accidentally updated the R@h application using the wrong signature file for the database which is unfortunately our largest input file. The update happened during the weekend and no one was around to fix the problem (I personally was on a backpacking trip with my family otherwise I would have immediately dealt with the problem). This caused all jobs to fail and hammered our servers. Our servers are still struggling to keep up with scheduler requests and download/uploads.

Coincidentally, a very large code checkin was made to introduce symmetric folding to our minirosetta application and unfortunately there was a bug that caused a 10-fold slow down. Before catching this bug, the R@h app was updated so we had to revert to the previous application version as a quick fix."
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=5011&nowrap=true#62640

2) what are the ways developed to fix it and when they expect the fix to be implemented

"To make sure this doesn't happen again we are planning to implement a quick benchmark test on Ralph for every application update that will test various protocols for performance and speed.

We are still in debug mode for our minirosetta application. There is a small memory leak and a 2 fold slow down in performance. The slow down was caused by a recent refactoring of the hydrogen bond energy code."

and later:

"1. we will make it a point never to do an update during the weekend or end of the week.
2. we do have a pre production environment - Ralph@home. But this problem was caused by user error . The signature file was accidentally copied over from Ralph when the standard protocol should automatically create the correct signature file. The 10x slow-down wasn't caught by our internal unit tests and benchmark tests but we are going to modify the tests to make sure it will get caught in the future."
http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=5011&nowrap=true#62656

From my perspective things seem to be getting back almost to normal. There are continued reports of bugged WUs but they seem to be at around the same levels you would get with previous Rosetta versions. We have now returned to about 78 TFLOPS compared to a rough average of between 80 & 95 TFLOPS (I did spot a low point of 28 TFLOPS one day so we are climbing back to where we should be).

3) after the fix is done can you please report it so everyone know they can return to rosetta (me, i have switched to other projects temporarily to ease your load troubles)

The project team have made several posts on this forum and made a note of the situation in the news section of the Rosetta homepage. From comments made by other crunchers I believe that an email newsletter is not an option right now, so choices of communication are limited.

About 24 hours ago I brought a new Core i7 system online with BOINC/Rosetta@home (6.6.36 for windows_intelx86). Message log shows a number of work units downloaded, computed and uploaded. No changes in individual user average or total credit scores.

Another Core2 system was down since middle of last week. Brought it up at the same time with 6.6.36, ~24 hours ago. It, too, has been computing work unit results. No change of score from it, either.

These issues all seem to be related to the current delayed awarding of credit.

Leave it one more day and most of it will be resolved - validation is rapidly ploughing through the massive backlog. Nothing to worry about at the user end and the r@h end is dealing with it now.

Hi all

There is no update on "Results" pages more than 10 days (16.09.09).

With regards

So, the "active WUs" slowly melted in "Results" pages, I suppose for all users due to no updates since 16.09.2009.
It looks like, that most of users are interested in credits, but not in results.

Also it will be fine to have some short basic infos about the WUs proteins like it is described in Rosetta@home Active Work Unit(s) Log (ie 1bm8, 1elw and so on). Some of the WUs can be identified, but lots of them not. There is no update on this page since January 2008 too.

The active WUs containing "results" page works again.

Are you guys updating your BOINC version any time soon? The default 25% CPU threshold (BOINC won't run when CPU usage is above 25%) is really annoying when adding new computers and forgetting the setting is there by default in the newer BOINC versions. I can't change the setting online thru Rosetta (unlike Collatz Conjecture).

Until a newer version is installed, you could change that setting on another project which does have that newer Boinc-version. You mentioned Collatz? The setting should carry over to every computer running Collatz.

Greetings all!

Is there a way on the Rosetta website to determine where an individual ranks for credit on the "Top Participants" lists, either sorted by RAC or total credit, without repeatedly having to click "Next twenty" until one finds oneself? For me, I'm guessing I would have to click about 150 times or so.

Thanks, and by the way congrats to the German, Spanish, Uruguayan, and Dutch crunchers for your World Cup dominance!

The best way is to use one of the dedicated BOINC statistics websites like BOINC stats. Currently you appear to be in position 25794 based on total credit.

Ah, that's an excellent site, thanks much! I appreciate you taking the time to point me there.

By the way, one of you power crunchers on these boards could possibly make some money writing an overall guide to the whole distributed computing area, "Volunteer Computing For Dummies" or some such. There's a lot of information out there spread around, and it isn't always easy to find.

Same here - check the server status page - it appears that srv1, srv3, and srv4 are down. Judging by the time of day they went down (COB PST) it may be scheduled maintenance time.

These guys are pretty good - its the first time I have seen them down in the three months I have been playing with the project.

Hello Chris,
Thanks for your helpful message! I noticed my client didn´t update the latest results as well. I have joined this project very recently, as in 4 days ago, so was a bit surprised to see some completed WU on my PC waiting already for a couple of hours to be processed.

For other worried participants:

go to your BOINC client, click the messages tab, scroll to latest message, if it reads something like "13-8-2010 2:36:36 Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down." it could be there is maintenance going on.

Maybe a few too many new users from the slashdot or other news recently...

It seems the server is starting to come back to life. srv4.bakerlab.org wasn't even responding to web requests but it is now. I was able to upload all my finished jobs but I cannot send the scheduler request to report them. Here is the output I get:
13-Aug-2010 12:47:58 [rosetta@home] Sending scheduler request: Requested by user. Requesting 0 seconds of work, reporting 2 completed tasks
13-Aug-2010 12:48:03 [rosetta@home] Scheduler request succeeded: got 0 new tasks
13-Aug-2010 12:48:03 [rosetta@home] Message from server: Server error: can't attach shared memory

And the tasks are still listed as ready to report.

I'm having some sort of problem as of 8/25 around midnight EST.

All of my computers have been unable to get new tasks. My solo and dual core machines have been out of a job and twiddling thumbs for about 6 hours now and my main machine is down to 50% and will be out of work in about 2 hours.

I've clicked 'update' and 'reset', rebooted , lit incense and laid silicon offerings (jar of sand and old CYRIX processor) in front of the machines - all to no avail. They no hungry.

Seriously, it just appears that scheduler has no new tasks.

I checked the server status and it's all green. Internet connectivity is not an issue.

I want to rule out hardware/software/user error as all of my machines are affected. I just want to be sure I'm not being the usual end user here and the actual problem is between the keyboard and the back of my chair ;-)

If no improvement in 12 hours I'll post back.

Thanks,

D
Team USA

PS. On my main rig I noticed the last remaining task has been running for 47 hours and reports 83 hours to completion and the time to completion is going UP.

Name: rs_stg0_lrlx_t315_run1_SAVE_ALL_OUT_19359_6103_1

Have two other tasks to complete. Then will reset to purge what appears to be a bad work unit.

This is just FYI.

PSS. In the time it took me to post this, 2 of the 3 machines poreviously reported have downloaded fresh tasks. I'm still waiting for the main machine to update. It appears things are just a little slow - not stopped.

Click on the properties tab and look at the difference between elapsed and cpu time. If there is a large difference then you are going nowhere very slowly. In these situations I close down and restart boinc which usually does the trick.

yup, CPU time is 1.25 hours vs elapsed of nearly 50 hours. I'm trying to pull the other 2 units which appear to be unaffected out of the machine and then reboot.

Everything else seems to be normal. Thanks for the fast reply!

Your problem may be caused by checkpointing problems on that work unit. Sometimes a work unit won't create a checkpoint/save progress so you do 4 hours work, switch to a new task, switch back again and find you are on 4 hours elapsed with 0 hours cpu time as it has gone back to beginning. Repeat that enough times and you end up with your situation of 50 hours elapsed but minimal cpu time.

If the problem persists after you reboot then two possible solutions are to either turn on the "leave suspended tasks in memory" option or abort the task.

Update: 345pm EST

Boinc software purged bad work unit on it's own. Que is now cleared.

Have enabled 'leave suspended tasks in memory' and rebooted and reset client. I've waited about 30 minutes now to see if I get new tasks or downloads.

Disk usage is only ONE MB as I have no data to crunch.

All work units have now been completed. I have no tasks and my requests to update result in these messages:

Keep trying. There are an extra 100,000 WUs in progress compared to yesterday, but they're all getting swallowed up as soon as they're issued. They're coming through in fits and starts. Seems like you have to be lucky to get a turn first.

What caused the system crash this time?
No message boards for a day or so, now servers are overloaded...
Where is your redundant system? If you don't have one I think it is time you guys create a backup server that is a mirror image of your main server.

These crashes and outages are getting a little old.
And no one has updated the front page news with what happened.

I could be wrong (and I often am) but I'm sure I saw words to the effect that they had a hardware failure in their back-end Storage Area Network

As far as redundant servers go, I'm sure they'd love it - just bring money.

Notwithstanding the all green status that the server status report proudly declaims:

10/1/2010 2:02:14 PM rosetta@home Reporting 3 completed tasks, not requesting new tasks
10/1/2010 2:02:16 PM rosetta@home Scheduler request completed
10/1/2010 2:02:16 PM rosetta@home Message from server: Project is temporarily shut down for maintenance

Rosetta has been offline essentially now for over two days. At one point during this outage, there was a message on the home page indicating a problem with the SAN storage. That useful explanatory message is no longer showing. The technical news page hasn't been updated in over *18* months.

I am guessing (and given the informational hard vacuum it is only a guess), the problems with the SAN may not be resolved -- or in resolving them other indeterminate issues has flared up.

The Rosetta project has generally been a very reliable distributed processing project. That has been its charm and at least part of its draw over the years despite the inordinately low credit structure for CPU cycles that it imposes on users.

Of late that reliability has taken a few hits, with the curring (and persisting) outage being the most recent.

So, the trend toward technical problems is a bit discouraging. That discouragement is amplified by the informational vacuum that is in play.

I am hoping to see both trends reversed soon....

I hope they fixed it good. The servers are going to take one helluva hammering now! ;)

Not sure if this qualifies as a 'problem with the website' but I'm getting 'file not found' errors after installing a fresh BOINC (6.10.58) and try to join this PC with Rosetta:

1/8/2011 11:10:10 PM rosetta@home Started download of minirosetta_2.17_windows_x86_64.exe

Would be nice to get this beefier machine on the project. Any suggestions?

Still no executables, but some work unit(s) downloaded:

1/9/2011 9:21:14 AM rosetta@home Started download of 1prq.aahelix03_05.200_v1_3.gz
1/9/2011 9:21:14 AM rosetta@home Started download of 1prq.aahelix09_05.200_v1_3.gz

1/9/2011 9:21:26 AM rosetta@home Finished download of 1prq.native.pdb
1/9/2011 9:21:26 AM rosetta@home Started download of helix.psipred_ss2.gz
1/9/2011 9:21:27 AM rosetta@home Finished download of helix.psipred_ss2.gz
1/9/2011 9:21:30 AM rosetta@home Finished download of 1prq.aahelix09_05.200_v1_3.gz

I found Google cache entries for the minirosetta and minirosetta_graphics exee files at boinc.bakerlab.org/download and ralph.bakerlab.org/download, but the files dont exist, and infact, none of the other exe files do either. So I cant even pull down an older version and load that. So I have work, but nothing that can process it...

Maybe it's a bit obtuse of me, but I see now (Twitter, and project page) where there is mention of their file server being down. I guess that's the reason, but on the server status page all looks good. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. In the meantime I'll suspend the project so I don't download any more work units. I don't want them to get stale or lost. Cheers!

Note quite; I got ONE new workunit since the failure. I suspect that I had already downloaded all the *.exe files it needs for other workunits before the failure, though.

I downloaded a WU on 8 Jan which is working. My problem is uploading the previous WU. Why rare we having the problems when the Server Statuses are showing OK?

Bummer! Still waiting for stuff to return to normal. I had a bunch of results that were complete ready for upload that have since disappeared from my queue. I am guessing they expired. I have a bunch more ready for upload, but it says upload suspended. I am wondering how I managed to drop in rankings in the stats lists (sorted by total credit). Apparently someone was able to upload some results to knock me down a couple spots.
I hope they get stuff up and running soon.

As mentioned above in this thread and in several other threads in this forum, the servers had a major crash a few days ago and it is taking time to recover.

It seems that 8 out 0f 10 pieces of finished work cannot be uploaded as due to an error, and I quote, "Project file upload handler missing". This message appears for each piece of work that cannot be uploaded and must be deleted.
These files appear to be missing when the original piece of work is down loaded to the computer.

Dear all,
I get the error "platform 'x86_64-apple-darwin' not found"
is this something temporary due to the crash?
should I reset the project?
or is this platform no longer supported?
greetings,

"This message appears for each piece of work that cannot be uploaded and must be deleted."

That message is no indication that anything must be deleted. It simply indicates that the upload server is still not running after the server crash. The BOINC Manager will retry the upload and wait for the server to accept the upload.

I can't upload completed tasks. My message reads "project file upload handler is missing." Is that my problem or the Rosetta software's problem? If it's mine, what do I do?

It's the same for me here, at least at my home location: project file upload handler is missing.

BUT: on my office computer, today everything went well. No problems downloading or uploading tasks, results etc.

So is it really a problem of the website, or could it be a problem with some inconsistent files??

Any help appreciated...

Until you see the project's estimated TeraFLOPs on the home page get up over 100, you can rest comfortably assured that you are not the only one having irregularities right now as the servers recover from the recent hardware failure.

From the homepage: We're bringing the project up from a recent backup (12/09/10) but the backup wasn't a perfect replica of the environment, so we're having to scramble to get all the parts working together again.

Due to this situation I don't think the project had any information about some of the files on our system and didn't know what to do with them or something along that line. In any case the whole thing died and they have to rebuild it from scratch again plus deal with 10 million data files in addition to the program files.

So as they said on the home page, its going to be awhile before they are back.

So I rejoin after almost 2 years of inactivity. I see 4 computers and only one of them with credit or perhaps another one with a little in the single figures. I can't remember there being 4 when I left. Could this be because of the backup? Anyway I try to merge them and they seem to have been disappeared instead. Is this from the outage or is it a bug in the software?

Only the newest show up and I can still access the other 3 with their numbers only they have now been anonymized, all with zero credit. My account still looks like it has the total credit. People will now think I cheated having the credit but no computers that actually did it. :D Though I don't see how one could. I seem to have rejoined at the worst time.

So is this something that will automatically be fixed or should I just leave it and forget about it?

So you haven't noticed that Rosetta@Home recently had a file system crash bad enough that they expect it to take some time to get everything back to normal?

You could always try doing at least one more workunit, and seeing if that's enough to restore whichever computer you use to your records. But note that a number of other people rejoined after an absence long enough they need to download a new version of the application software have had problems doing that download, since the restore from the file system crash hadn't proceded far enough to restore that software from the backup they're using.

Hopefully, they can fix whatever other problems you're seeing, once the restore from the backup gets far enough.

Yes I did. But I don't think you understand my problem. The computers were all there and it looked like the totals added up. The only strange thing was that there were 4 when I was only using 1 during that period so I assumed it was a side-effect from the restore.

No problem so far and easy to solve, or so I thought. Then when I did the merge they just poof disappeared. Currently studying how databases work myself I don't see this as a problem with the backup. The data WAS all there after the restore until I did the merge then it disappeared. The app and workunits and everything are working fine but I think anyone doing a merge or who did one then would have the same problem. This was something I did on the website alone and that is where it broke.

If those machines were inactive for a while, they no longer show on the list of active hosts. If they were merged, one is removed as well.

They were there and they did show. It doesn't sound like anybody understands so let me illustrate:

Total Credit for 768175 before merge: 181,754.28
Total Credit for 965812 before merge: 6,008.17
Total Credit for 1003570 before merge: 0
Total Credit for 1026651 before merge: 0 <--- computer presumably being merged to

Total Credit for 768175 after merge: 0
Total Credit for 965812 after merge: 0
Total Credit for 1003570 after merge: 0
Total Credit for 1026651 after merge: 0 <--- notice no credit

So their credit was zeroed but it was never added to destination host. They were effectively just removed. This looks like a software bug. If it can't be fixed right now I understand, but the merge function should then be disabled until it can.

Upgrading BOINC versions sometimes causes the system to think you are using a new computer. For example if you had run some tasks with BOINC 4.x and then upgraded to BOINC 5.x the system may count the same computer twice. 3 duplicates may have been caused by 4 installs.

People will now think I cheated having the credit but no computers that actually did it. :D Though I don't see how one could.

I wouldn't worry about your missing data at host level. Your BOINC Stats page clearly shows that you earned the credit steadily between July 2006 and January 2009, so there will be no suspicion of "faking" your credit. ^_~

Any chance of getting the "results" links on the Home page and the Account page fixed - for the past few weeks all I have been getting is the message "Sorry, the data requested does not exist"

I had previously posted this issue in the thread "User results" but maybe that was not the right place to do so.

When I click on Results at http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/, I get this error message:

Request Error

Sorry, the data requested does not exist.

This happened within a few minutes of the time I clicked on Your Results under boincmgr.exe for the 64-bit Windows version of BOINC 6.10.58, and was able to actually see the list of results. I just tried that again - the list is still there.

This suggests that the results server is now working, but the Results link to it on the home page isn't.

The home page link you refer to provides a view of your results as compared to others for the same protein. It shows how your best score on the task compares to all of the other submitted results. The link from the BOINC Manager just displays the standard BOINC web pages listing your recent work in progress or completed for specific tasks.

I have 17 tasks which seem to have disappeared. They are listed in my website account Tasks List as having been sent on 24 May, with a deadline of 3 June. However they are not in the BOINC Manager tasks list. Obviously, I cannot now abort them. It would appear that all I can now do is simply leave them and allow them to expire.

It would appear that all I can now do is simply leave them and allow them to expire.

Yep. A scheduler reply must have been interrupted and so the server thinks the tasks were issued, but the BOINC Manager never received them. The BOINC world refers to these are "orphaned" tasks.

The home page link you refer to provides a view of your results as compared to others for the same protein. It shows how your best score on the task compares to all of the other submitted results. The link from the BOINC Manager just displays the standard BOINC web pages listing your recent work in progress or completed for specific tasks.

The home page Results link still gives only an error message. Does that imply that I've only tried it on workunits for proteins that no one else has returned outputs for yet? Or does it imply that the comparison process hasn't been working lately?

Is there any particular reason why the two methods of observing the server status give such extremely different numbers of workunits ready to send?

The Server Status near the top right corner of the Rosetta@Home home page currently reports Total queued jobs: 2,729,562.

The Server Status page for Returning participants currently reports results ready to send as 71,144.

As far as I know, they are different queues. Total queued jobs feeds the "ready to send"-queue.

That is my understanding as well.

If you look at the glossary at the bottom of the server status page, the Feeder sends tasks to the Scheduler. The queued jobs (on the home page) is the number available to the Feeder. The ready to send number on the server status page are those in the Scheduler which are immediately available for clients (our computers).

Could easily be correct, but definitely confusing. One of those server status lists should show both in that case.

It gets even more confusing. ;) There's another queue of about 100 tasks, I understand. You actually get a task from that queue not from the ready to send queue directly. Undoubtedly there's a good reason. Maybe it facilitates the throughput on the server-end

How about adding a link to a webpage explaining the different queues to each of the server status reports?

Right, the queue of jobs are not "ready to send" yet, and the tasks that are "ready to send" have to move to the "feeder's" internal memory (generally about 100 tasks), before a given task can be sent on a scheduler reply.

Here are two links that seem to get an error. When I click the "Results" link which is between "Your account" and "Teams" on the front page or when I clic on the "View" link to the right of "Reports and plots of results from active work units" on the Your account page, I get this error: "Request Error: Sorry, the data requested does not exist." Could this error be fixed? Thank you.

I just checked here in December.
Data does not exist.
That says to me that they no longer support that function.

Could you check if all your servers are working? Whenever, I try to upload the output files from completed workunits, this now fails. Whenever I try to report one that was able to upload its output files, this also fails. No new workunits download. No error messages, just the usual delays after the server could not be contacted.

I will try this again, as long as it says this:
| Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
| Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down.

IT IS NOT OUR PC'S, it is the Project that is down!! YES the Project went down the other day, then the weekend came, we KNOW they don't even come in on weekends at Rosetta and YES they will probably fix it this week. If it is easy they should fix it today, if it is a more serious problem, like broken parts or even missing or stolen parts, it could take a bit longer! Set up a backup program with zero percent as the amount you want to give it. Every time Rosie goes down you will crunch units from the other project, until then Rosie will get all your time.

While running Rosette I've got 5 finished WU's ready to be send to the server, but my BOINC environment is constantly trying to upload the data to the server without any success for 3 days now.

When I checked the server status yesterday and today I didn't see any issue, so what can be the reason for not starting the upload towards the server?

I'm running v7.2.42 in a Windows 7 environment.

Anyone know when this upload problem will be resolved. If the servers are online then it seems like DNS can't resolve the IP addr for the upload server. My same machines are not having an issue with E@H.

I'm not seeing DNS problems at all. The names are being resolved. The servers aren't responding, likely due to significantly throttled traffic as the Rosetta problems thread and the front page indicates.

It will be fixed when it's fixed. I'm sure they don't enjoy their own project not receiving needed data, either. In the mean time, attach to another project or turn the computer off, walk away, and come back later.

I think it's the lack of useful news that is the main source of frustration here, and this thread is also lacking therein. The secondary source is idle machines, though right now it is down to one. Most of the other machines were managed to get dribbles of tasks to work on and haven't been too idle...

However, in terms of competence of the project managers and system operators, the situation is not impressive, even by my low standards back when I was in graduate school. If I have any personal involvement in BOINC, it would be on the client side, but the server side is mature enough that lots of people are able to operate it pretty reliably. Not so for the University of Washington.

By the way, I'm NOT trying to claim any credit for BOINC. If I had any involvement, it was more on the negative side in terms of criticisms of the ancestor s@h project and suggested improvements. Because of my caustic temperament, I don't know or care if I was involved, and I'm certain not to get any recognition. However, I also think it's just a coincidence that BOINC is structured the way it is, because my suggestions were, after all, entirely and intuitively obvious to the most casual observer.

So in conclusion, how about a few wild guesses? Maybe something like "We're 35% sure we know what the problem is, and think it is about 55% fixed with a 25% estimate that the system will clear the backlog within 2 days, plus or minus four days.

Let me share what I can. I am not at UW, and so have no first-hand knowledge of this specific situation. But let me offer the following:

In the past when such extended issues have arisen, they have extended the task deadlines so you still get the credit you would have if you had been able to upload on time.

Typically such network problems are either in the "still a problem" category, or in the "now resolved" category, there really is not often an in between.

Now that it has gone for a few days, the project will get slammed when things come back to normal. So even when the network is fully functional, it won't feel like it because most every active machine attached to the project wants the server's attention. It often takes 2 days of full operation before things really start to look normal so far as speed of upload and download, and getting new tasks when requested etc.

This is because all the machines are out of work, and also because as they crunch for other projects, they later try to repay the debt to R@h to maintain your resource share. So, hosts that are running multiple projects start to hit R@h more than they normally would, especially in the first couple of days back in operation.

So, I typically try to avoid hitting the server when it first comes up. I extend my runtime preference so the tasks I do get will run longer on my machine before being ready to report back (don't go overboard on changes to runtime preference, otherwise BOINC will tend to download too much work). This helps my machine put less strain on the server as it is trying to dig out from the backlog.

If you don't wish to mess with such things, rest assured that the BOINC Manager retries are structured in a way to achieve many of the same net results as I do manually. But only if you resist the temptation to hit retry now on all of your uploads when the server comes back up. :)

I wondered if it was just me! The "Server Status" says all is working, but I've got a batch of work units that have been "Uploading" for several days.
I get a variety of messages from "Project servers may be temporarily down" to "BOINC can't access internet" (which it can, because it is doing for other projects).

Alternatively, one could suspend processing on Rosetta until the IT folks back at UW address the back channel problem that they may have inadvertently created by making some change they may not be aware they made.

One would think the IT folks could figure out what they changed -- but sometimes it is more complicated I suppose.

This one has lingered for quite a while though. Perhaps it will get resolved in the coming week or so.

Can't update my user profile as there in no captcha shown and no input field for the required two words available
Edit: Seems to be a problem with Chrome browser, with Internet Explorer a small pop-up says that only secure content is displayed, and I have to confirm that all content is shown before the captcha system becomes available.
So what have I to do to get Chrome browser eligible for all of my Rosetta duties?

Can't update my user profile as there in no captcha shown and no input field for the required two words available
Edit: Seems to be a problem with Chrome browser, with Internet Explorer a small pop-up says that only secure content is displayed, and I have to confirm that all content is shown before the captcha system becomes available.
So what have I to do to get Chrome browser eligible for all of my Rosetta duties?

Thanks for catching this! I identified the issue and fixed it. Regards!

Good to know I'm not the only one who's suffering from the issue I've seen. Will temporarily stall Rosetta calculations until the upload procedure is working again in a more reliable way.

This is odd. Is there any useful info in the client logs?
