Since there is no way for the user community to contact the moderators reliably, I have established this sticky. Hopefully this will reduce the number of new threads started solely for the purpose of attracting the attention of the moderation team to a problem or complaint.

This is a place for the user community to contact the moderators to provide feed back, ask for explanations for any moderator actions, request moderator actions, or get assistance that may require a moderator.

Feel free to post here, but note that after the issue is address the posts will be moved to an archive thread located here.

So think of this as a work queue for the moderation team. If the question is in this sticky and a moderator has not responded it has not yet been addressed.

Greg, the current FAQ on the subject is entitled "How do I set the adjustable Work Unit time parameter in my Preferences ? What should I set it to ?"

I know it is too wordy and it is the one item in that thread that most needs revision. But I was wondering what you found in the new post the most noteworthy? Was it the perspective coming from setting up machines for a specific environment (i.e. where they boot up frequently)? I'm looking for ideas on organizing FAQs. And for how to state the "Q's" so you can easily find the information you are looking for in them.

With machines that are powered on and off all the time, your main concern is about how much of your crunch time is preserved, and how much is lost.*(often a concern amongst us crunchers)* Work is preserved at the end of a model, and you don't have any control over how long the individual models take. Work is also preserved at checkpoints established by the project,*(interesting to know that is how checkpoints are set as that has never been explained that i know of)* so again, you don't have any control over that; other then the setting for how frequently to write to disk. I think the default is 60 seconds.*(that is correct)* Just make sure you don't set it extremely high. The checkpoint doesn't complete until a time when you allow BOINC to write to disk,(include that with the above sentance on checkpointing)* so if you set it to 3600 seconds or something, then you would be losing an average of a half hour of crunching each time your power off (assuming you were on for that long).*(also include in checkpoint)*

You can only control your preferred runtime for a task. This will basically determine how many models you get done. More runtime, more models. It does not effect the accuracy of the models produced, nor the amount of work preserved when you power off the machine. *(interesting from the point of how does RAH work on models)*

So, your decision about runtime preference should be based on the other factors you mentioned, such as download bandwidth, and reporting completed results back prior to deadlines. *(something you could add to general prefs on how to setup BOINC/RAH)*


You may also want to establish network and CPU times of day when BOINC should run. That way all the BOINC network traffic can occur during off-peak time. By setting CPU time of day you can control your air conditioning and peak electricity costs somewhat, or assure that BOINC is not running during times when the machines are likely in-use or undergoing frequent reboots *(again something to use in general prefs of BOINC/RAH)*

well sometimes on really steady platforms it cant do harm to set checkpoint time thingy really high, this can make your HD spin down, go into resting mode ;), that saves energy, en makes your HD last longer.

Seasons Greetings,
Wondering what is being done to address persistant crashes on FOLDIT for windows Vista users. Issues have been ongoing since latest update, prior to which no vista related issues existed for this user. FOLDIT simply stops working when protein is pulled or shaken rebuilt etc. Have tried to reinstall application four times, as well as reinstalling windows vista, with short term results. i.e; foldit works for about 30 minutes after a full reinstall or vista reinstallation. Have contacted admin with regards to this and admin has implied that the issue is in the domain of vista as an ineffective operating system, and that I should run XP. FOLDIT worked fine for me until this latest update, and now it doesnt work at all. What does the Baker Lab intend to do resolve these issues related to exclusively to Vista users?

I looked around and found this to report problems and no other.

All of a sudden rosetta@home has started acting up. I got the latest version when asked. Now, spontaneously, it seem that boinc quits processing work and the time elapsed does not increment and the time remaining starts incrementing rather quickly.

Where can I go for help? Or do you all know?

It sounds like the version you have updated was the BOINC Manager. The BOINC Manager has now changed the time shown to an elapsed time, not the CPU time used that it showed before.

I've not heard reports of BOINC stopping the processing of work. Generally it rotates between the various projects you have attached to. If you could post to the Number Crunching board with some details about how you know it stopped processing, whether you are running on Windows, Mac of Linux, which BOINC Manager version you are using, and any messages you see in the messages tab, that would help understand your situation.

...so what platform is your machine? Windows? Linux? Mac?

I see now Semper Fi has a Power Mac. Here are a couple of the relevant posts, the Rosetta mini application does not support Power Mac's, and so you will only see work when it is issued for the older verion 5.98 of the Rosetta Beta application. This has only been occurring once every couple of months.

Hi...a newbie here with probably a really small problem here and a daft one on my part.

I've a couple of tasks that are showing as complete and "ready to report" but I don't know how to report them.

Probably being really dim but can you enlighten me Mod9?

BOINC has several steps for processing tasks. After a task is completed, an output file is produced. This must be uploaded back to the project. Once this occurs, the task goes to a status of "ready to report". The BOINC Manager can then wait a while until it needs more work to contact the project. This affords the possibility that additional tasks complete and can all be reported with a single interaction to the project server.

BOINC takes care of it all for you. Or, you can go to the projects tab, select Rosetta, and then click the update button to cause this to occur immediately.

Looks like you've now completed 5 tasks and they have returned just fine.

With a broad brush stroke, credit is a rough measure of the number of CPU calculations you and your machine have run for the project. For more specifics, this post was an attempt to clarify the credit system, and if you follow the link to my profile and my posts, you will find numerous discussions on the subject.

I don't understand this one clunker among my 55+ tasks:

25,601.52 seconds, 147.06 claimed credits, *** 0.68 granted credits ***

All that time (7+ hrs.) and not even ONE whole credit?
My other tasks took 2 to 3 hr. and granted 40 or more credits.

The cpu time and claimed credits are Very high; granted credits is Very low.
What happened???

XP Home SP3, AMD Athlon II X2 250
3.01 GHz, 1.75 GB RAM, Rosetta Mini 2.14
