Hi.
I've an SSD on my notebook and don't want to wear it using Boinc. So I installed Boinc on a 8GB SD card and running on it. It runs Gpugrid and Einstein, WCG, CP etc. normally. However, on rosetta@home, tasks can't start, stop even run due to I/O wait. It waits long time and CPU usage shows high I/O.
When I run it on an SSD, rosetta works can write GB of data in some minutes.
Why it is using the disk so much, and what can I do to decrease the writes. Work checkpoints are set to be set in 300secs. However, it even can't start crunching them...

8GB is a bit small if you also have the other BOINC projects on that same SD. So that may be why they can't get started there. You may need to review the BOINC preferences for the amount of "disk" space BOINC is allowed to use.

If I recall, R@h needs enough room for the application and files, as well as 1GB per task for the output file (they don't actually reach that size, but that is where the maximum is set, so BOINC Manager makes sure enough room exists before it really lets the task begin running.

I am not clear what you are seeing on the SSD. That sounds like a lot of disk activity. But you should be aware that the setting defines how often the application is allowed to checkpoint. So you probably want to increase that number for your purpose to something over an hour. You'd probably rather risk losing a bit of work if the machine is powered off, then putting too many writes on your SSD.

R@h will checkpoint after each completed model. I am not positive if it checks the setting at that point or if it must write the checkpoint. Some tasks can checkpoint at various points in the middle of the model, and I believe those will wait to checkpoint later if your preference for how often to write has not yet been reached.

I let Boinc 4GB space and I think its enough for the jobs. However, on SSD CPU usage displays high I/O CPU usage. I check the SMART data of SSD, it logs the read and written amount of data. While running rosetta@home there is enormous increase in written data value.
Next time I'll have a look at the work sizes too.
As a mod, can you move the thread to NC forum, as it will only dublicate content to reopening it there?
